Kinda NWR: Mani/Pedi questions

So, I've never had a mani or pedi before. I've had artificial nails put on, but never just a manicure. Is there anything I should do to prepare? Also, how long do they last? I ask because we're having e-pics taken next wednesday and I am getting both done before. I'd like to get it done tomorrow, but I'm a server and I'm concerned the mani will be ruined before Wednesday. Also, and this may be tmi, my feet are pretty beat up. I work on my feet 8-10 hours a day 4 days a week, plus I enjoy walking outside without shoes on so they're not pretty. Should I try to clean them up a bit before I go?

Re: Kinda NWR: Mani/Pedi questions

  • I'm not a huge girly girl, so this might not be the best advice, but I do love mani/pedis! Its so nice to be pampered. I don't think you really need to focus on anything before you go, but you might want to decide if you want your nails rounded or square since thats one of the first questions they may ask you. I work in health care, so I'm constantly washing my hands, and a mani doesn't last that long because of this. If this is the case with you I would say go in on Monday instead, and it should last through your engagement pics. I figure better safe than sorry, right?!

Pedi-wise, I am the same way. My heels are so hard because I always walk barefoot. I've treid the ped-egg before and stuff like that, but they might be able to tell you what types of at home treatment would work for you in the future.

Good luck! I usually freak out with these types of things too if I haven't done them before, but its fun! Enjoy!

  • PP said it really well. I am not a girly girl either but I must get a pedi at least once a month. I don't do manis bc they never last. They will ask what shape you want, I love squared. Rounded just looks like old person nails. They will ask what color, you might want French for epics. French is the white tip and clear coat or light pink on the rest of the nail. Very pretty. My feet are just as bad, I use the stupid plumus stone, but it doesn't last long. They usually bust out this thing that looks like a cheese grater!! Its embarrassing, but It works really well!! Just think, there are men that go nasty old women...so they have seen way worse! Mine usually last almost an hour each, so two hours there, maybe call and make an appointment and ask how long they think. My girl is amazing and always gives me a great, long massage so it takes longer. In my busy days it will take her maybe an 1:151:30 if I want both!! One last thing! Relax and enjoy it!! It is the most amazing thing!! Have fun!!

  • Nah, I wouldn't worry about cleaning them up! Just make sure you do NOT shave your legs the day you go. Shaving creates tiny cuts in your skin which can get infected or cause a rash. My sister shaved her legs once before we went, and when she came out, she had a rash all over her lower leg.

  • Thanks ladies. I feel better knowing they aren't gonna make fun of my yucky feet....lol. I'm probably gonna wait until Monday, just in case.

You may want to consider a shellac manicure. Most salons do these now, and they're wonderful. They'll give you a normal manicure, except the polish is cured under a UV light. It's dry as soon as they're finished, and it lasts at least 2 weeks--no chipping! There are several different colors, or you can do French, which I think would look great for your E-pics. I get these all of the time and will definitely have one for the wedding.

I absolutely second this.  If you're worried about it lasting, I would definitely go shellac.  It's your real nails but it looks amazing and lasts much longer than a regular manicure.

Does this make your nails weak like artificial nails?

No, they don't buff your nail or anything like that.

  • I've never had the shellac, but I agree with the PP's. I've seen people with them and they last a long time!! Don't worry about cleaning up your feet first, I never do and I have gross feet. If you don't do artifical or shellac, definitely wait on getting the mani. Pedicures seem to be indestructable no matter what for about a month, in my experience. Mani's, especially french, chip on me within a day or so. Solid color lasts longer, but I definitely love the look of french. If you're working with your hands, wait as long as possible and consider the shellac!!

  • Sounds like shellac is the way to go if possible. I'm gonna call and ask. I think I'll wait till Wednesday morning to get it done regardless, that way there isn't any chance of it getting messed up. Thanks again ladies, you're the best!
