Not Engaged Yet

I'm a big kid now!

I chose an IRA plan today.  It's my first time doing it, and I'm pretty full of myself right now. I'm having an 'I'm an adult' moment.

Although, I did call my Dad and say: "If you could go back to when you were 25 to start planning for retirement, what would you do?" Having to ask for his advice made me feel about 12.

What have you done lately that makes you feel older, or like you are growing up?

I sold a house. :) So I've officially bought, lived in, then sold. I've gone through the whole cycle. It's a bit overrated...

Not me in particular, but one of the girls I graduated college with just announced she is pregnant.  I know a lot of people I went to high school with that have several kids, but for some reason, the people I went to college with starting to have kids makes me feel like we are all actually 'adults'.  I think it's that a lot of people I went to high school aren't doing anything with their lives, working minimum wage jobs, most of them aren't married, they have several "baby daddys", etc where as the people I went to college with actually took the time to get their $hit together before having families.  Now that they are, it's like...wow, we've been out of college for a few years, working, buying houses, and now having kids...crazy.

it's okay...  the whole career/health insurance/benefits/retirement thing was really exciting and overwhelming when i was going through it.

getting married + house makes me feel much older than i'd like.

when i got a dog, and had to actually take care of her and clean up her messes...  that made me feel a little grown up.  granted, i was still in college then so it didn't take much to make me feel grown up.  but gosh, i was getting up in the middle of the night just like new parents do!  ;)

I don't think I've done anything recently, really. But in the past year I've gotten my first CC and started investing chunks of money. It didn't seem like much at the time, but then I realize how few people my age have done any of that. I have friends who don't take their paycheques to the bank or fill out a school form for financial assistance (their moms do it for them).

I wish I could buy a home right now. It looks like it will still be between 1-2 years before we are able to do that.

I know this is really small but any time I get practical stuff as a present it make me feel like an adult. Like when I got baking dishes and a Crock Pot for my birthday.

Oh, I thought of a couple little things:
I bought my gramma jewellery for Christmas. Legit jewellery, too.
I hosted my first dinner party.

LOL, Wrkn I went through that two weeks ago.  It was such a weird feeling.  I had to find my own financial advisor.  After talking to him and looking into stock and investment options i felt so weird cause it was like a big sign that I was no longer some wide eyed 20 something messing around.  I'm planning my retirement.  Bah!  The next big thing that looms on the horizon is buying a house.  That scares me a bit.
  • edited December 2011

The FI and I organized our closet yesterday after taking down all of our Christmas decorations, that I've had up for the past 3 months. It was nice to see what we could get done together. This is the first week he is home off of night shift so we are finally getting things done around the house.

update- I had vented about him not helping around the house, when I got home last night he had taken the decorations off of the tree, put them away and washed our wood floors in the living room. I thought for sure he did something wrong and was trying to suck up for it haha.

I look forward to the day we get to buy a house- wont be until he is done nursing school.

Wrkn nice work with the IRA, that makes you not only an adult but also a responisble adult!!

Good for you on the IRA, Wrkn! FI still needs to get himself a retirement plan. Just keep sockin' some money away.

Well as with a pp, I got a crockpot and pots and pans, kitchen towels, and a spice rack for Christmas, and I was really happy with it. That made me feel grown up, since I will have an apartment next semester at school instead of the dorms.  Also, this past week FI moved into an apartment too near his job (just graduated college), and it made me feel pretty grown up going over there instead of having his parents around, like the have been since he graduated.

I totally heard the Flinstone's Vitamin kid say the subject of the post. Or is it Pampers Pull Ups? One of them.

I am starting to seriously consider grad schools and it's freaking me out. Especially since it means I will be leaving the state I was born and raised in and really get out on my own. Makes me want to crap my pants, TBH.

Coming home after visiting family for Christmas, it really felt like a bit of a relief as the plane landed.  I wasn't going back to a roommate, I was headed home with my boyfriend.  It was an odd feeling - my parents' home was no longer my 'safe place', and I was relieved to be back in my own space with him.

Even when I had graduated college and lived in apartments, the house I grew up in was still "home".  Now, it's no longer "going home", it's "visiting my parents".  That's a weird thing.

    GPB, It's pull ups.

Cali- I get you on not calling your childhood house 'home'.  I've been doing it for a few years, but it was odd to get used to.

"You know that point in your life where the house you grew up in isn't really your home anymore? All of a sudden, even though you still have a place to put your s--t, that idea of 'home' is gone. You'll see one day when you move out it just sort of happens one day and it's gone. You feel like you can never get it back. It's like you feel homesick for a place that doesn't even exist. Maybe it's like this rite of passage, you know. You won't ever have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know, for your kids, for the family you start, it's like a cycle or something. I don't know, but I miss the idea of it, you know. Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people that miss the same imaginary place."

If anyone can tell me what movie that is from, I'll buy you a beer.

It was more than just what I call it - it was the distinct feeling that this is my home now, and that is not.  That was what was odd - I finally felt like THIS is my home.

I turned 25 yesterday.  That made me feel like I was really grown up.

We also started RRSP (registered retirement savings plans) and we have 30% of what we need for a down payment saved.

    So growed up.

Reading this post makes me feel old... My parents' house hasn't been "home" for over a decade. And it doesn't bother me. In fact, I've lived in four states since then. I've bought a house, lived in it, sold it, and bought another. And I'm on my second crockpot.

    Yep. Old lady. Right here.

I got a food processor and a breadmaker for my birthday.  And I LOVED it!

And after this year's birthday, I decided I would rather spend future birthdays with a quiet dinner with only 4-5 people max.  No more crazy parties.

I now own an ice cream maker, a popcorn maker, a rice cooker, a food processor, a breadmaker, a french press, a crock pot, and a very nice matching set of pots & pans.  Not sure if that makes me old or a kitchen goddess... I prefer the second!

Cal - You're safe. You're old when you send all those appliances to Goodwill in favor of a whisk and a hand mixer. And when your pots and pans no longer match because you've moved, lost things, ruined things, broken lids, etc.

Oh, I already had that.  My pots and pans were a mess - dented, missing tops, teflon peeling, mix & match from roommates stealing pieces or inheriting pieces from ones roommates forgot.... so my parents got me a brand spankin' new set for my birthday.

The same thing happened to me! Not with babies though. One of BF's friends just got engaged. I felt very caught off guard by it. It was the first real engagement I knew of and not an oh-crap-we-accidentally-got-pregnant engagement. That made me go, "Oh wow! I have reached the age where things like this will start being a normal occurrence around me!"
