   I found picking a DJ to be really hard. A lot of them have similar prices, and to me, it was a harder thing to judge than vendors like photographers.    Our DJ is awesome! She is female, but just as qualified and under $500. Very professional and she also gave us a bunch of awesome booklets of song ideas and other unique ideas for our wedding. Her name is Marlena and she is with Howling Wolf DJ. Check her out!

   We met with 2 different companies. With the first one the guy we met was the owner of the company, looked very professional, was rated well and would be the one at the wedding.     Picking a DJ is difficult because you can't actually see them in action before your event. If your stuck between the two I would look at their reviews and maybe call some of their references (if they have them) to get a first hand account of how they did.
