Come keep me company! FI is watching Swamp People.  I wanted to watch Grey's.  I'm such a nice fiancee for handing over the remote Wink

I'm bummed because my MOH was supposed to come over for dinner tonight, but now she's sick.  Hopefully next week we can catch up!

Hey Chelsea, I'm here, sort of. I'm feeling a bit like a Debbie Downer tonight, so I might go bake to get my mind off life instead of staying here, but I'm here for now.
I'm watching Grey's- that's the beauty in our house of having two tvs haha!

Oh, nothing in particular, just not loving where I am in life right now. I'm sick of subbing, I had to fill out paperwork today to get an extension for my interim professional teaching certificate because I haven't subbed enough days in the last 3 years to apply for my permanent certification, feeling "large" etc etc... just ready for some awesomeness to happen.

I love to bake, but I only have a hand mixer. For most things, it works fine. Buttercream icing though was NOT fun lol- lesson learned :)

Mrs.J, I didn't know you subbed. Why are you sick of it? I'm thinking I might get stuck subbing in the next few years.

I finished my first day of filming with my students. Today was very trying in one period. There was a girl picking out her earwax and eating her dandruff in one class. Vom. It was tough to contain the situation. The other kids were freaking out.

I can only imagine how frustrating subbing is.  It sucks how few teaching jobs there are out there.

It still makes me gaggy. Blegh. They will have a new seating arrangement tomorrow. Hopefully that helps with the distractions.

Did anyone watch Smash the other night? I did and it was kind of cheesy but I did like it!

I don't think so? But the kids pick on her. She farts in class, hums one note when I ask for no talking, etc. She's a super sweet, intelligent girl and it's hard for me to get the kids to be nice to her when she does 'weird' things since it's 8th grade and they all want to be cool.

I haven't watched Smash. I am not sure that I'd like it. Plus I already watch too much TV, I don't need anymore shows to watch.

For some reason a girl who hums when you ask for no talking and does weird shiit like eat her dandruff does not sound like a sweet intelligent girl. lol.

Sere (and others),  this is my 3rd full school year subbing. Most days I love it. There isn't a doubt in my mind that I LOVE to teach, and I even don't mind the idea of subbing. But I'm so OVER not knowing how many days in a month I'm going to work; if the phone is going to ring at 7AM to send me to work; lack of school support for substitute teachers; plans that get left for me that are so lacking I just fudge my way through the day; and I'm sick of the lesser pay too.
I also miss so much of what full-time teaching is: the planning, having a space and students of my own, the daily rapport with colleagues, knowing what I am doing every day. And especially, I miss the general consistency.

Chels, the school division I live in has posted a total of 9 teaching positions in the 3 years I've been subbing. 1 has been a position I would love, 1 other was in an area I could teach, and the rest have been in our district, but over an hour's drive away. I'm just getting worm out, that's all.

Sorry for the novel!

There's a similar boy in a school I sub in regularly. He's in the 11th grade, eats eggs in the hallway everyday, loves to fart extremely pungently and loudly on a regular basis, and takes only about breeding rabbits.

Aw.. 8th grade sucked so much.  I just wish kids could get a long and respect their differences. It's not like they have to be best friends, but I don't get picking on people.

No she doesn't when you put it like that. She is a mainstreamed student who has Asperger's. She is extremely book intelligent (like whoa) but not as socially intelligent as her peers. Like, once I asked for no talking and she started pounding her pencil on the table and when I asked her to be quiet she said "you said no TALKING."

Jesse, that's why I am scared I won't get a full-time teaching job next year. I love teaching and know I want to do it and I will sub if I need to but I really want my own classroom because I crave consistency.

I was not as thrilled with Smash as I thought I would be, but I'll keep watching. It seemed a bit slow.

Ah, gotcha. I thought you meant she was just being annoying. That makes sense. It is hard for kids that age to understand why people with Aspergers can't grasp the same social concepts the same way. I remember a kid that had it when I was in school and it took a long time for people to stop teasing him because no one understood that it wasn't necessarily voluntary.

Well thanks :) It comes and goes, most of the time, I'm really OK with it, just having a tough day.

Teaching works a little bit differently in Alberta than I think it does down there... once we have an education degree, we can legally teach any grade, and any subject from Kindergarten to grade 12. So, I'm certified for everything K-12.

BUT my degree is in Secondary Education, with a major in Social Studies, and a minor in English Language Arts (and 1 credit course short of a double minor in Native Studies). At this point, I would gladly accept any position from grade 4-12, in any subject. I'm not cut out for K-3, and I don't have the knowledge base to teach high school Math or Physics, but literally anything else, I would apply for.

Also, I didn't see Smash, like Reils I don't think it's my kind of show. And besides, I have enough TV shows on my schedule already lol.

I just finished Season 4 of Breaking Bad though, and I can't wait for Season 5.

I have a student with aspergers too.  It took me SO long to get used to her sitting funny in her chair. She tucks her knees to her chest.  She's also realllly specific about her routine (which is normal for aspergers) so she gets upset if I ever mix stuff up a little.  I forgot what the book was called (it has a cutout of a dog on the front) but it's told from the opint of view of a child with aspergers.  It's really good.

ETA I didn't even finish my thoguht lol. If you haven't read it, I highly reccomend it.

Mrs.J, I don't work in education but I couldn't be a sub or have a work situation like that. I would hate not knowing the night before if I was going to have to work in the morning or not. That would drive me nuts. I also think that half of the fun of a being a teacher is having a classroom and decorating it and getting to know all of your students.  I would be frustrated if I was in your situation too. Hopefully a job will open up in your division soon.

I really hope the kids 'get' it sooner rather than later, but I do recognize it's difficult for them to have the maturity to see someone acting differently and being okay with it. I know even I have a hard time understanding her sometimes and I am an adult!
