My fiance and I will be heading to the Kentucky Derby this weekend and it's going to rain! We have reserved seats in the uncovered portion of the grandstands. Any suggestions on what to wear since it's raining?
Oh my gosh. Wear shoes that are stuck on your feet. Not flip flops, the mud will suck them off if you have to travel on the ground there. Get a solid hat, a light rain coat (you can get them in stylish trench coat styles) and a good umbrella in case of wind.

I too am heading to The Oaks and The Derby this weekend. A poncho is your best bet, as umbrellas are not allowed in Churchill Downs. Have fun, the derby is AWESOME!

I think it is a absolutely STUPID rule about the umbrellas. I think Churchill is the only track that has that rule. I am sorry, but a poncho does not go with a fancy hat and heels!!! A man definitely made that rule.
I have no advice - but good luck! That sounds kinda awful. Then again I hate hate HATE rain. And I hate being wet. And I hate my feet being wet. My greatest fear in life is Jungle Rot. Well, that and snakes.

Yes good point for the Grandstands and Millionaires Row; Not so much for the infield crazies. But they get wild anyway. Derby is awesome even in the rain.

I think it's a great rule. Umbrellas in a large crowd sucks. People just don't pay attention when holding them. Plus I think I get more wet because of the drippings from an umbrella next to me.
What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests. Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Sorry ladies, I was attempting to make a joke. Failed miserably on that one. Where we sit, there is a very strict dress code, and that is why I tried to joke about the fashion. OP, anyway, have fun at the Derby, it truly is a wonderful experience.

Yes it does stink. OP, What does your hat look like? This isn't sexist, but one of the main aspects of the Derby are women's hats.
Have an awesome time! We went in '08 and it was rainy all morning, but as soon as we got to L'ville from Lexington the rain let up and it turned into a gorgeous day. I hope you have the same luck! We typically go to my parents house in Lexington and picnic @ Kenneland for Oaks and the Derby, but we're staying put this year. I will have to say that Churchill Downs is one of those places with an atmosphere where you'll hardly care if you are in the rain (still take that poncho though!).
Have you looked into those little plastic covers that go over hats? State troopers wear them, and we saw them for sale at a local outdoor shop, like a mom and pop version of Bass Pro or Gander Mtn. I'd pack one of those and a clear plasic poncho, since they scrunch down reallly well and you could stash them in your purse until you were sure that you would need them. Definitely pack shoes that will stay on your feet, and you don't mind getting a little muddy.
I love the umbrella rule, as poeple are generally inconsiderate. My high school football stadium has that rule, too.
Congrats on getting to go! We are planning to do the Keeneland thing next year if we can.

Maybe the rule also has something to do with the horses. . .horses HATE umbrellas unless someone has taken the time and effort to bomb-proof them against them. And young, high strung Thoroughbreds are NOT bomb-proof, lol.
Stage is probably correct, though.
