@peaseblossom55, that is a tough decision! It's always good to have a lot of excellent reading material to choose from. :)

I'm just in the middle of a kind of self-discovery kind of book about finding yourself and such. When that gets too heavy, I have something called "Every Day" by David Levithan which is fairly interesting so far.
  • Awww, thanks, everybody! I just feel really lucky to work in a place where we not only care about our patients but we genuinely care about each other. It makes it so much nicer to come to work knowing that we all have each other's back no matter what. Definitely gives me some warm fuzzies. <3

Yeah, med-surg is what separates the men from the boys in nursing school, at least in this program. Our professor is famous for just not being that helpful. She will post 20-minute lectures online to cover entire body systems, and then when we get to class we are expected to be experts and able to answer questions and do case studies without any in-depth instruction. So basically this has been a self-taught course, which has been pretty stressful. But so far, so good! After next Wednesday the rest of this program will feel like a breeze!
  • @lmhollister - Well, sure, you can come wrap all of my Christmas presents! Thanks!

@BriSox81 - I'm sure living in Canada didn't hurt either. PLEASE DO! Just get ones that fit him. In case you couldn't tell, B's was a little... ahem... snug. (It reminded me of GusGus from Cinderella hahaha)

  • @amapola14 do you know what kind of specialty you want to get into? I always toy around going to nursing school and either working on the labor and birth floor or oncology. Two big extremes lol.

  • @Amapola14 - Oh man. That all sounds SO good! Just between you and me.... free food contains no calories so you're in the clear!

  • Hey ladies! I am currently being a blob with mac and cheese and a drink after my editor murdered an article I loved that I wrote today and I'll probably be getting calls from the mayor and the interview that went eh fine, but it's not the hours/pay I need.

  • @buddysmom80, DO IT. It's not so bad, I promise! ;) Is there anything in particular keeping you from trying it out, or is it just something you're kinda-sorta thinking about?

Haha, I know what you mean, my interests are all over the place too. I think Psych nursing would be pretty intriguing, but I'm not sure if I have the temperament for it yet. There's also a developing specialty of forensic nursing which I think would be incredibly cool, but we'll see if life takes me in that direction. Other than ER or ICU, there's nothing I really *don't* see myself doing, ya know?
  • @Kait, =/. Sorry your editor is tearing up your work and that the job wasn't what you'd hoped. You earned that drink, lady!
  • Thanks @Amapola14. Congrats on passing your exam!

  • You know what holds me back, @amapola14? I work in a hospital now and when I used to go to the floors, I would see how shitty people treated nurses. Also I don't think I could handle poop. I do like to watch Nurse Jackie though so I live vicariously through her. @kait sorry that your editor did that to your article. That has to suck.

  • I'm watching The Hunger Games and getting distracted from studying for my last anatomy cadaver practical. I think I can, I think I can.....
  • I think I'm the last person on earth who still hasn't seen Catching Fire

  • I think I need a glass of wine so much for decorating the rest of the tree tonight. I also hate to see the cats ruin it too.

  • @peaseblossom55 we're taking bets to see what's going to happen first to our tree. Either Quigley is going to pee on it or Buddy will poop under it. Both things happened last year. This is why we can't have nice things.

@buddysmom80, I haven't seen Catching Fire yet either. Last two on earth? I have no idea when I'm going to get a chance to see it, but hopefully soon!

Ah yes, there is that thing where people think nurses are glorified waitresses. I'm not a fan of that, but I do enjoy the chance to genuinely serve, educate, and make someone feel better, so that's what I try to focus on. As for the poop...you get used to it, lol. That doesn't really phase me anymore, but I think every nurse has that one thing that grosses them out and always will. Mine is feet (which I know is totally not that bad in the grand scheme of things, but still). It's kind of fascinating to find out the one thing that disgusts you more than anything else!

ETA: If you do L & D, there's not a whole lotta nastiness (IMHO, anyway). Just sayin'.

I don't know why I'm trying to convert people to this profession so fervently. I guess misery loves company...;)

@Riss2893, you got this! What exactly is an anatomy cadaver final? It sounds gruesome and fascinating all at once.
  • Just thought I'd leave this here for everyone(that I'm not friend's with on FB)'s viewing pleasure.

I give you: Fat guy in a little shirt.

  • I'm popping in to say hi. I had wine for dinner. And I'm cuddling on the couch with my stuffed turtle while watching trashy TLC tv. I feel like its midnight I'm so tired.
  • @QuiltingNurse - several of my favorite people around here come from Canada. @swazzle is right - I'm ALMOST from Canada, so that's probably why I know so much ;)

Also, @swazzle, your GusGus reference made me snort laugh. I LOVE GusGus!!

    @cask85 what are you watching?

Half ton killer transformed. It's graphic.
ETA: this woman is literally leaking fluid out her skin.
  • I want to curl up in bed, but I just took a shower so I'll get my pillow all wet with my hair. #girlproblems

  • @buddysmom81 when I was in the condo I had to put the tree in the spare bedroom with the door closed.  Since we have a beautiful big window in the front of our house in the living room we are trying it there,

Hoping to see Catching Fire this weekend.

  • Why do we have so many BSC newbies newbs? (excluding the normal ones and the not so newbie but not so reg people like myself and @Amapola14. We like you! :D )

  • @Amapola14, I'm in an applied anatomy lab so we've been learning muscles, bones, vessels, etc. off of human cadavers. With a practical you have different stations set up on different bodies all around the lab and you have to answer the question that is pinned to a specific body part.
  • @buddysmom81 - eeeyeahhhh. Super gross.

In other news, I'm almost done with a whole bottle of wine already.
