Red and Black Colors

Hello! I am new to the wedding planning and this site. I am hoping I can get some suggestions here. My favorite color is Red and my finace's is black so it only makes sense to have Red and Black be our colors (with White of course). But I am worried that there is a fine line with these colors and I do not want it to look Gothic-not because there is anything wrong with that but it is simply not my sytle. We would like our wedding to feel romantic/classic, not gothic. Is there any way to pull this off with these colors? Any help (pictures especially) would help me so much! I also want to stay away from anything  "high school prom" like. Areas I am struggling with in particular are the men's attire and reception tables/decorations.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Red and Black Colors

  • Check out Pinterest. I'm sure there are tons of ideas there!
  • Personally, I like deep red better than red-red for weddings. But if your favorite color is red-red, I think you can do it, but just be careful how much of it you use.

Depending on the formality of your wedding I would do black tuxes/suits with black tie for GMs and white tie for grom with red flowers as everyone's boutonniere. For the women, I would do black dresses with red bouquets or red dresses with white bouquets. Try using google image for inspiration. Either way, I think a white and red bouquet for you would be pretty:

Men in black tuxes or black suits depending on the the time of day would be great and classic. You could have the groomsmen wear red ties if you want to incorporate a color.

When choosing red for a wedding I see a lot of red roses that are often incorporated in gothic themes. I would suggest picking other types of flowers. You can also mix the red flowers with white flowers and greenery that will make it fresh rather than 'gothic-esque.'

Flower examples: Gerber Daisies, Poppies, Hydrangeas (for white), Daisies, Carnations (filler flowers), or you could incorporate some lillies...I'm no expert clearly.

Stay away from black chandeliers or candelabras as this scream mid-century gothic to me. Go for white candle holders and maybe have black tablecloths? You could have black table cloths with some sort of white overlay. I would stay away from black lace but that's only because I think that gives a gothic vibe in some cases. Here are some pictures I found. Hope this helps!

  • I think that as long as you don't go too heavy on the red and black it won't look gothic.  Incorporating more of the white would make it really nice, IMO.  Here are some pictures for inspiration:

  • Red and black are very popular wedding colors. Unless your taste skews goth already I wouldn't worry about it.

  • If you're worried, you can always use red as more of an accent color. Black tuxedos with red ties and black bridesmaid dresses with red sashes or shawls. Etc.
