Lazy Saturday

It's a lazy Saturday in our house.  Fi and I had these awesome plans to go to the Battery Park library, and then finally see American Hustle.  But we're dog sitting for my sister-- I went outside to walk the dog and decided we are not setting foot outside this apartment for the rest of the day.  Currently Fi, the dog, and our fat cat are all lying half-asleep on the couch.  We're watching the outside get slowly dusted in snow.

I'm organizing my recipe binder and planning what we'll eat this week.  Chicken noodle soup is most definitely on the menu.

Re: Lazy Saturday

  • We ran errands this morning before the snow started up, but are staying in until this stuff stops coming down. The weather report said we should expect 1-2" today, so we'll see if we end up going out at all.

We had the tasting with our caterer yesterday, so we're probably going to spend a lot of time going over wedding stuff while watching the "Fast & Furious" movies.

  • Yup FI works Saturdays so I've been lounging in my robe all day ignoring all the dishes and laundry that need to be done lol.
Do you have a crockpot? I have some great recipes if you wanna try something new this week and give me one of yours! Every Sunday morning when I make the list I ask what he wants and he always says "whatever" but then complains that we never have anything new haha

  • FI and I just got back from lunch at Ben's Chilli Bowl with one of his cousins. He's doing grad school work right now and I'm procrastinating on doing laundry as I am too full of deliciousness. We have a friend's housewarming party tonight that should be a lot of fun. And then tomorrow I'm planning on doing some more wedding planning; I'll do some research on cake designers and then we'll work on figuring out some of our ceremony details.
  • I ran some errands including picking up some cannoli DH as been dying to try, but they are always closed when he goes. He will be so excited when he when gets home tonight.  I also went to a jewelry store to look for some ideas for a new setting for my e-ring.   Then I went on a wild goose chase to find Chef D's dog food.  Damn dog eats better than us.

Now I'm just sitting on the sofa snuggling with Chef contemplating what I want to do for dinner.

  • Oh no.  I hope you will be okay @cookiepusher.

  • @jenna8984 Sure, I'll do a recipe swap!  I'm only just starting to use my Crock-Pot.  I have a tiny one that's intended for appetizers and small portions, so most regular recipes have to be cut in half.  What kind of recipes do you like?  I've been using my little Crock-Pot for turkey taco soup lately, that's a good one.  And I'm big into baked chicken lately, it's so easy.

Oh no!  Concussions are the worst.  Seriously, have Fi be very alert for anything that seems off.

  • Oh no!

I'm finally putting my Christmas decorations away...

And cooking a big batch of tomato basil vegetable soup. I just dropped the box of barley and spilled it all over everything.

And I'm waiting for my fiance to get her tonight (and he gets to stay until Wednesday!!!!).
  • oooh turkey taco soup sounds right up our alley!! We love meats and pastas...it's shameful to admit but we don't ever eat vegetables lol.

We always make double of everything to have it for lunch the next day so you could easily half this recipe. It's our favorite- ranch pork chops.
6 boneless pork chops, 2 small cans cream of chicken, 2 packets hidden valley ranch seasoning, 1 small can chicken broth. Combine and wisk the liquids together and cook on high (crockpot) for 2 hours. Cook 1 package egg noodles separately on stove and serve pork & sauce over noodles.

Since you like baked chicken try this- in a 9 x 11 casserole dish 2 cups water, 2 cups white rice, 2 packets chicken bouillon. Stir so all the rice gets wet and evenly spread out. Place chicken thighs or breasts over rice and season with garlic powder or whatever you like. Tightly cover with foil and bake at 375 for 30 min (boneless) or 45 min (bones).

@jenna8984 Those pork chops sound perfect!  I actually have cream of chicken I've been meaning to use up.  Awesome-- thanks!

    Here's the taco soup:
alb ground *COOKED* turkey (you can also use beef; I've even done it before with ground lamb and it's awesome), one chopped onion, one drained can of black beans, one can of stewed tomatoes (crushed also works), one can diced tomatoes, a cup of tomato sauce, a small can of diced chiles, and a packet of taco seasoning.*  You can also add a can of corn (drained) if you like corn.  Sometimes I chop up carrots in there, too.  You just mix everything and cook it in the Crock-Pot on high for about 4-5 hours, or simmer on the stovetop for about 20 minutes.  This is adapted from the Six Sisters blog.

*I make my own taco seasoning.  I'm really loosey-goosey with measurements, but I use garlic powder, onion powder, chile powder, cumin, paprika some red pepper flakes, salt and pepper.   Roughly one part each onion and paprika, two parts chile, just a little garlic, and a dash of cumin and red pepper flakes depending how hot you like it.

ETA: Haha, I forgot the most important part-- that ground meat must already be cooked!  Oops...

  • We haven't set foot outside today, and we aren't even in the midst of the polar vortex! I have done laundry and finally unpacked from our trip last week. FI is currently engineering (I mean really. He has sketches and everything) a box maze for kitty out of the various boxes we've acquired since FI started building his own computer. I'll post pics if itturns out well.
  • Yum- thanks!! FI complains that I don't make enough "tomatoey" stuff so he should like that!

  • I graded papers. Tonight, I am irrationally excited for pizza and watching the Lizzie Borden movie on Lifetime.

@jenna8984 Ha, just corrected to point out that the meat you use should be already cooked.  It's probably obvious which is why I forgot to mention it, just wanted to make sure nobody ends up with salmonella!

  • I'm at work (boo!), but nothing is happening (I was called in to manage our website and social media in the event of snow, and there is no snow), so I have (a) submitted one wedding announcement to my hometown newspaper; (b) balanced my checkbook; (c) started working on the wedding album DH and I plan to order; (d) thought about being nice enough to submit a wedding announcement to the paper DH's grandmother reads so she'll see it, too (but haven't done it yet); and (e) knotted up a storm.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • Yikes, cookie! Hope you'll be better soon.

I ran errands to pick up music this morning. Then I spent three hours in a practice room on campus refining my piano playing again. Now my back hurts, which is better than my hands or wrists (mild carpal tunnel and tendenitis across my hands).
  • We ran around today getting stuff in prep for leaving for our honeymoon next Sunday. We're now 100% on clothes, medication, toiletries, et cetera, and we also have plenty of dog food here for the dog sitter friend who's staying with our babs while we're gone.

Currently, I'm in the process of attempting to obtain one of those amazing Gabifresh fatkinis for our honeymoon. I'm losing my shit at the possibility of wearing that beautiful, beautiful garment.

  • I ordered my wedding invitations and my slip for my dress.

  • Cookie I hope you are ok. Today we've done nothing but sit around. I've been reading and FI has been playing video games. We're going to watch a movie in a little bit.
  • I *finally* got to get in my Pajamas to relax!!! I was at work for 10 hours, ate lunch, and went on a 4 mile jog. Now it's Harry Potter time on ABC family!!

  • I am applying for jobs. Went to my school engineering job fair today and got some good leads. Now begins editing my resume (based on responses) and submitting online applications. Hopefully I'll find one in the next two months. Then I have to prep for TA work.  I'll hit the gym today. It is almost 70 here, I almost forgot it wasn't march. :)

Cookie-best wishes to you. hope you aren't hurt too bad!

  • My 2 teams competed this morning.  First place with an amazing routine for the elementary kids and second for junior high, though they lost by 1 point after a 5 point deduction for running over time.  Their music crashed and burned and the judges wouldn't excuse that for being over time.  Th spoor kids were on the mat for about 30 sec waiting for the music to get fixed.  It wasn't their fault.  I compete tonight.  I'm already getting nervous.

Sorry if this is common knowledge by now but what are you competing in?

Saturdays are always busy here. We went to the gym, visited my grandmother, showeled the 4 inches of snow that fell since we left home this morning (and at least 2 more have fallen since we shoveled so we will do that again in the morning). We went to the library, Home Depot, the grocery store. I made a jerk chicken chili, it was alright. Now we are getting the kids ready for a sleepover and plan to relax the rest of the evening. Finally!

  • I'm alive. I think. FI let me fall asleep on the couch for 5 hours (he's not very bright, but I love him). My head still hurts, but I don't appear to have a concussion. Now we're watching Big Bang Theory reruns and eating leftover shepherd's pie.

@JCBride2014 That recipe sounds super tasty and easy! Do we have a recipe thread anywhere? I'm always looking for new ones and I'm usually too lazy to surf blogs and such for ones that are actually good.

  • Finally relaxing for a bit.  I had rehearsal early this morning.  Then FI & I met our parents and did the tasting and menu deciding for our reception.  The food was really good so we were very excited and pleased.  Then went clothes shopping at near by outlets and then grocery shopping.  So tired but very happy the tasting went so well.

  • I had a pretty good day! I went kickboxing earlier today, went home showered and changed and met up with some work friends. One of our coworkers kicked ass at an MMA fight ( I missed the actual flight ) so we all celebrated around midtown. Then FI and I went to dinner with FMIL in BK, we are heading home now. So a busy Saturday for us :)
