Snow grouchiness.

I am a student at a law school in uptown NYC.  I also tutor an undergrad student at a different school in midtown.  Midtown school canceled all their classes and transportation early this morning because we have about 6 inches right now.  You know, the responsible thing to do.  Uptown school still has not canceled classes, and just sent us an email that although they are closing most of the campus gates due to difficulties in snow removal, we are still expected to get to class.

The snow is coming down steady and fast, and I expect my commute (my class isn't until about 4) to be miserable.  I will then be traveling home around 7pm, at which point the snow will probably be even worse.

Seriously.  This school has people commuting from at least 4 boroughs of the city, CT, and NJ.  Cancel the damn classes.

  • I'm sorry. That sounds awful! I had professors who would refuse to cancel classes to back when I was in college. One would literally pack a bag and snacks so he could sleep in his office if it was too bad put to go home.

Hopefully you have a safe commute!
  • Yep. You know how I feel about this :) It is messy out!

Can I meet you with some warm coffee? ;)

  • @sarahufl Gosh, I sure will need it after battling my way over there in the snow.  I'll have to make sure I bring cash to hit up the falafel stand for a hot cuppa before I go inside (their coffee is much better and cheaper than the cafe).  AND I just remembered I have to stop by the registrar office before class... I'm fighting with them about something at the moment, too.  So I have to make sure to be extra early.  Keep telling myself I'm lucky to go to school here... but sometimes I'm so annoyed it doesn't feel like it.

  • Ugh I feel ya, CT is a mess too.  FI says his teacher isn't likely to cancel his classes unless the entire school closes though, this teacher is from Minnesota and thinks we're all whimps :P  He's like "It's above zero, my kids are having recess right now."

Yeah. It seems ridiculous that your school hasn't cancelled The snow is mostly done here in central PA/ Maryland, but it's only going to get worse for you guys.

  • @JC, I graduated law school in 2012. I know the painful dilemma of not attending vs risking your life. They should have cancelled, and should cancel. Has no one contacted the torts professor(s) asking their take on possible liability issues the school is creating? Heck, the law school here shut down last Wednesday.....and this is FLORIDA.

@Chipmunk415 Yeah, if this was undergrad I wouldn't go.  But this is my practical clinic and I feel like I really must attend.  You know the pressure to attend every single moment of every single law class.  Of course, I'll be pissed if I get there and a bunch of other people are missing.

As far as I'm concerned... if you have to shut every campus gate except one, because you cannot keep up with the snow removal-- who says the government will keep up with snow removal on streets and for the subways?  Hint: they can't.

  • That's sucks. Hope they change their minds before you have to make the trip.

  • Have you contacted your prof directly to make sure they're still planning on holding the class? I've been watching the news all day, and it's going to be a mess in the city with the snow coming down so hard and fast (and it's turned from fluffy snow to heavy, wet snow already). The plows are out, but they said the timing of the storm is making it hard to clear the snow. They've barely been able to get to all the primary roads, let alone any other streets. Rush hour is going to be a zoo.

  • That really sucks! I haven't been outside since driving in this morning but it hasn't stopped snowing. Ugh. And then it's going to snow Wednesday and then this weekend.

I completely understand. I went to one of my externships with a horrible cold, because I didn't want to miss any training. My supervisor was awesome- got me soup, and after I finished work on my cases, she and some of the other attorneys had a casual "conference" where they told war stories and I was allowed to come, ask questions and laugh.

My school (and I think this is an ABA rule) had a rule where if you missed a certain amount of classes, you're automatically dropped/failed. I think it was an 80% mandatory attendance- didn't matter if you were sick. Of course, in some classes this was 2-3 sessions, max.

Holding out good vibes that your school regains its sanity and cancels. Then again- this is law school, WHAT SANITY?!

Yep... no sanity to be found.  I am leaving now.  This had better be the most awesome class session ever.

If it makes you feel better, campus is pretty clean. It is a bit messy around here, but the walk is fairly clear and they are actively cleaning. Good luck!

  • We're getting 10 - 15cm, but could be up to 30 if the storm shifts ever-so-slightly north. Sigh.

Haha, I used to feel that was about cheezburger and failblog.  Now I feel that way about TK, Refinery29, and Cracked.

ETA: except TK isn't a "time suck" in the same way because you guys are, I like to think, actual human beings.  So human interaction trumps random internet articles.

  • Hey locals, have you guys seen the snow predictions for this weekend? http://gawker.com/5982121/nyc-will-get-either-3-or-30-inches-of-snow-this-weekend

God help me, I might kill myself if I am cooped up in my apartment for the whole week!

They have Cracked blocked at work, so that cured me of going on there too much. However, I do go on Buzzfeed waaaaaaay too much.

And I agree, because TK is interactive and actually informative, I don't view it as the same kind of timesuck as most of the other websites I frequent.

  • Of course its going to snow like crazy this week because I have a million things to do, I am working both of my jobs and its my weekend off.
However if snowing a ton this week means no snow feb 21st or 26th I will be happy. I am flying to Florida and back on those days. I dont want my flights to be cancelled.

Are you freaking kidding me @cookiepusher? Ugh this winter needs to be over already!!! I went running on Saturday and planned to go running outdoors instead of the gym like I do weekdays all this week. Clearly that's not happening. Grossssss. Hey, you are in NYC also right?

also- I freaking love buzzfeed. I'm on that way too much also. FI is annoyed because I've been taking all their quizzes and I'm all " I took the buzzfeed 'what Madonna song' are you quiz on Buzzfeed and guess what I got!!!"

    FI stares blankly

    Me: Guess!!!
    FI: sigh. What.
    Me: Guess!!!!
    FI: *rolls eyes* Material Girl?
    Me: Yea!!!!!!
    FI: argh

Ironic fact of the day: the new snow boots I ordered because of all this snow are delayed in the mail-- because of all the snow.
