Avoid weird tan lines?

I know there is plenty of time but it is never too early to get ideas.

Anyway, our wedding is in July and I am wondering how I can avoid weird / awkward tan lines?

I am a jeans and t-shirt type of girl so I don't want my arms to be tan but not my back or shoulders because that might look weird with a strapless wedding dress.

Also, I will NOT go to a tanning salon and use a tanning bed (I have my reasoning for it).

Any ideas?

Do you go to the beach or the pool?  I have a bandeau bikini I use specifically for tanning when I don't want lines.  It's not the most flattering thing for my ladies, but I always try to use that for the first few days of summer so I don't get weird lines.

If you don't want to get sun at all, I recommend Jergens Natural Glow lotion.  It's basically foolproof and will give you just a hint of color, nothing fake looking.

And if you are more concerned about protection from the sun than getting uniformly tan: I sometimes use a light hoodie with UPF protection against the sun, when it is really hot and sunny and I don't have SPF around.  Mine is from Lulu, discontinued but looks like this:

The fabric is sort of technical and futuristic, but it really protects from the sun.

ETA: no idea why the pic's not working. Just google "Lululemon runbeam hoodie"

Sunblock. I use the spray stuff so I know I've hit everywhere. FSIL had visible though not extremely dark tan lines at her wedding (strapless dress, halter tan lines). Since her dress was not bright white, everything looks kind of dingy in the pictures.

ETA: Does this hurt your feelings? Because it was true. I had to edit some of the pictures I took because the color difference was visible. I know, so mean of me.

  • I just use tons of high spf sunblock.  No tan lines if you don't tan at all.

  • Do you want to be tan for your wedding or do you just want to be even? Spray tan. Or make sure you wear tube tops & such this summer. I've been thinking about the same things- women always seem to have those lines that never go away- even now I have faint ones!

I tend to tan during the summer (not much) naturally anyway so I don't want to be more tan than I would normally. I think the tube tops might be a good idea.

I might have to try the bikini thing.
  • In addition to wearing sunblock, I just wore strapless bikini tops all summer before my wedding (which was in May, I wasn't taking any chances!). I felt bad for the other people at the beach who had to witness me with little support all summer but I didn't have any weird tan lines on my wedding day!

  • Ok on this topic, what self tanner would you guys recommend if you want to be tanned, with no tan lines? I go to the beach often to boogy board and jump waves, bikini not an option or I just all fall out (or off for that matter).

  • Hoping not to threadjack, but I have terrible racerback tan lines left over from LAST summer. Wedding is in May. How can I even them out?

Get a professional spray tan-- they can usually apply it to even out your lines.  I'd ask around though about wearing a spray tan with a wedding dress.  I think if you wait a day or two you'll be fine and it won't run off.

  • Ugh I'm in this boat too. Super pale, and I burn easily. I run a lot too, and there are no strapless running tops. I plan to bathe in sunscreen every time I walk out the door.

Great suggestions on the lotions and whatnot.

  • Like PPs I wore strapless dresses, tube tops, and bikinis leading up to the wedding.  I don't tan much, but I do have visible tan lines in our engagement pics so I was more careful prior to our wedding.
  • I'm worried about this because I'm super pale, burn easily, and am currently a coach for high school women's lacrosse. So basically I get to be outside for 2+ hours a day in Southern Florida sunshine. I am slathering on the sunscreen, but I'm also worried about awkward tan lines.

Keep your fingers crossed for me please!
