*face scrunch* No.  Nerd girls already have to put up with a lot of shit re: are you "real" or not.

So what if nerd girl likes big glasses and scanty clothes?  Does that negate her knowledge of Hawkeye, Ursula K. LeGuin, Arkham Horror, and/or the MSDS for Miracle Whip (all things that can qualify you as a nerd to someone and be neglected by someone else)?  Trust from someone who was told, "I'm so surprised how much you know about [specific beloved comic book company].  I wouldn't think that from a girl (girl, yes) in heels and makeup."  So yeah, that's some pretty assumption heavy BS.
  • I almost added something about "slut" shaming, but figured SOMEONE would mention it.

Thank you for not disappointing me, Varuna.  *squinty eye*

  • Sincerely,
Facebook user who is annoyed that this woman would never ever have sex with him

I actually don't think this is fair either.  It also assumes that the only annoyance is based in sex and/or gender.  Anyone can be protective of their space where they feel "safe" (gaming stores have a huge problem with this when anyone not stereotypical gamer look enters).  It's hard to negotiate having your safe spaces intruded upon.  I don't think it excuses any behavior, but I can understand it, while attempting to say No, this isn't how you behave.
  • I have never once seen a woman who is interested in scifi/comics/gaming complain about attractive women also liking these things.

  • meh, I have kuus...some of the 'fake nerd girl' shit I've heard came from girls who were loosing their coveted 'only female' status.
granted, these aren't prime examples of mature individuals, but they're still voices in geekdom's community.

I don't really understand what you're getting at with this.  As far as women attacking women in nerd culture, it does happen.  I'm trying to find this great article I read from a gaming female, who wrote about how she rejected other women, b/c she had fought her way to the top and "there could be only one" type of problem.

That is not as big of a problem as male nerds fighting to keep women down and doing it in a misogynistic manner, but misogyny isn't about wanting to f*^k someone.  This girl could be socially "ugly" and have put on scanty clothes and big glasses and this post would still apply. She's probably still be thin though.

When it comes specifically to cosplay, there is an element against the "pretty ones", b/c the assumption is that they're doing it for attention.

  • That is so wildly irrational.  Who would go through all that effort just to get attention from geeky guys?  They're the lowest hanging fruit ever.

  • There are girls like that for every group, territorial in the worst way.

So, Kuus, how does it feel to participate in patriarchal society? I'm assuming it was unintentional, but you sure as hell just did.
  • Eh I can see where they are coming from. I was picked on from elementary school to high school for being a "nerd" and a "freak". So it kinda sucks to see being a "nerd" is cool now. Sue me for being human

  • So the bullied can now turn to bullying?

Your statement of "it sucks" is far different from calling someone a slut like the OG post did.

I believe "nerds" are the best group of people to hang out with. A lot of my friends are electrical engineers and while they can be pretentious, they are some of the sweetest guys you will ever meet. I would rather be friends or be in a relationship with a "nerd" than someone who likes only the gym, tan, and laundry concept. Also, I don't care how hot you are, if you sound like an idiot, I am most likely not going to give you the time of day.
