Snarky Brides

GoT Season 4 Premiere? SPOILERS

Anyone else watch it?

DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT SOME SPOILERS. I tried to keep things vague, but these are the fun details.

Opening scene with the swords and wolf pelt- pretty sure it was grey wind's pelt, but who did the original sword belong to? My vote is for Ned Stark, since they emphasized his gigantic sword in the "previously on.." segment.

Cersei continues to be a self absorbed, catty bitch, though she does introduce a new comment to follow Loras- instead of his grandmother's "sword swallower" we now have "pillow biter."

Margery has a touch of her grandmother's snark- a necklace of sparrow heads, YES!!

Olenna's one scene was brief, but enjoyable, especially her admiration of Brienne

I don't blame Sansa for feeling miserable, but I wish she'd be more like her sister- Arya proved yet again tonight what a total badass she's becoming.

Tyrion has quite the mess on his hands- grieving wife, pissed off girlfriend, and Oberyn Martell's warning

Speaking of Oberyn, I greatly enjoyed the look on the blonde procurer's face when he was ordered to stay as entertainment, only for Oberyn to start playing stabby hands at the sound of The Rains of Castamere

Drogon is HUGE. And snapping at his mother. I got a chuckle out of the contest between Grey Worm and Daario, especially when they dropped their swords immediately. I'm still annoyed they replaced Darrio, but thought the new guy made a good point with the flower scene, pointing out to Dany that she has to know her people and their customs to rule effectively. If it was the old Darrio, as soon as she got the flowers, the clothes would have started flying off.

For the first time, Jamie is forced to realized his "nephew" is an arrogant little shit not fit to rule. I think Brienne is going to have to smack him around a few times before he remembers his promises.

Preview for next week's episode indicates the Purple Wedding has arrived!!!

Re: GoT Season 4 Premiere? SPOILERS

  • AHHH I'm so glad it's back!!!  Yes, the sword they melted down was Ned's sword Ice but I think that the wolf pelt was Grey Wind's- Ned didn't have a dire wolf.

I cannot stand Cersei. Seriously- she drives me nuts. Jamie "took too long" to get free and she's punishing him for it? Really Jamie got the raw end of the deal from all of his family- no one really seems to care that he was tortured and mutilated....

I love Olenna- I like Margery too but I also don't trust her- I just enjoy seeing her piss Cersei off by manipulating Joffrey.

I think Sansa and Arya are both still very naive- Arya's kinda scary with her sudden bloodthirst but Sansa has been put through the ringer for real. I'm curious why the drunk fool randomly showed up again...

Jury's still out on the Daario...definitely not as suave as the previous one, but maybe more suitable for the part?

Still love Brienne, hope they don't kill her  but they kill all my favorites so I'm sure they will....Also Bronn has been one of my favorites for a long time too.
  • Ramsey is Roose Bolton's bastard- they haven't gone into really why he's such a sadistic guy but Roose Bolton mentioned in the last season when they revealed who he actually was that he "does things his own way"....as in he's BSC. Then again the sigil for their house is a flayed man...
  • @shrek- the wolf had to be Grey Wind- Ned never had a direwolf; Lady (Sansa's) was killed early on, Nymeria (Arya's) was run off to save her life, Ghost (Jon's) is somewhere around the Wall or beyond it, Summer (Bran's) is with him beyond the wall, and Shaggy Dog (Rickon's) is with him. That leaves Grey Wind, who was killed (or apparently killed, depends on what plot twist theory you enjoy) during the Red Wedding, beheaded, and his head sewn in place of Robb's after the Red Wedding. They showed Grey Wind's head in the final episode of last season.

Regarding Ramsey- he's Roose Bolton's bastard. Roose (guy who betrayed Starks and stabbed Robb saying the Lannisters sent their regards) mentions who he is in final episode of season 3. During the opening credits for last night's episode, we saw their stronghold for the first time (black, red painted flags). Ramsey isn't interested in the throne, he's merely a sick, psychopathic asshole who likes to torture people for fun. Unfortunately, his father is ruthless and sees this as an asset, which is why he's in charge of destroying Theon/Reek. Now that we know his father is working for the Lannisters, Ramsey has extra motivation to hunt down Bran and Rickon, so that House Stark and the Stark name are finally and completely destroyed.

  • I would also add with the Jamie-Cersei thing...he doesnt view it as wrong he's more concerned with his honor being tainted after the Mad King- to Jamie she is his lover just like any lover who is not related...Cersei took another (related) lover so I think that's why she's brushing him off....

I don't think Jamie and Brienne are ever going to be attracted to each other, but I do think that their relationship is probably going to get stronger. She's obviously into the whole honor as a knight thing so she would understand Jamie wanting to at least attempt to restore his...
  • There was a line in the books where Jamie unexpectedly found Brienne attractive (the bath scene where she stands up and nearly starts whaling on him), but he was very uncomfortable with his arousal, as she's nothing like his sister (except in the blonde coloring) and he didn't expect that to happen. In the books, Jamie is slowly making the evolution from the self absorbed incestuous jerk to the man with honor.

Cersei's previous family lover disappeared mid way through season 2. Her self absorption is staggering, and Jamie is starting to realize that while he was always faithful to her, she's a spoiled brat. Before Robert's death, it was implied she slept with her husband long enough to have a dark haired son (who died), prior to Joffrey. I think theres a subtle hint there that afterwards, she only ever slept with Jamie, faithful to him, BECAUSE he was always there with her. As soon as he was gone, she found another playmate. That has to be grating on him, that he spent the better part of a year trying to survive, while she's busy screwing around.

  • @shrek, nope, bastards are given last names based on the region they are from. The north- Snow. The Eyerie- Stone. Dorn- Sand.

Ramsey and Jon are in no way related, except Bolton was a vassal to Stark, so there might be a minor blood tie there. Theories on who Jon's parents are run rampant, as we dont know and the two people who did in the books are now dead. Ned's still in the running. One of the favorites is that Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targeryn (Dany's older brother, the last dragon), and Lyanna Stark, (Ned's sister, whom was "abducted" by Rhaegar, starting the war that ended the Targeryns rule and put the Baratheons on the throne). Lyanna was dying when Ned found her, perhaps of childbirth or infection afterwards, and she made Ned promise something. Catelyn was pregnant with Robb when she arrived at Winterfell to find Jon already there as a baby.

A fan favorite also has Jon marrying Dany at the end to tie the bloodlines together, end the hatred, etc.

Personally, I'm expecting the White Walkers to come in, slaughter everyone and everything in the 7 kingdoms, and Dany takes one look and goes "eehhh, no"

  • I don't have HBO, but I have read the books. I'm just hoping I make it through the end of 5 by the time that season comes out. I'm a slow reader. (I read the 4th book over a period of 3+ years.) My Fi has read it all and I get mad at him for spoiling things that happen in the books that I haven't read yet.

As for theories for the way it will end, I think that Dany is the key and her dragons are important. While all the kingdoms are playing their games, Winter and the White Walkers are the real threats. So far, they're being mostly overlooked, which I believe will be the to the detrement of the entire kingdoms. I think that Dany will come across the Narrow Sea and conquer, however, at some point the war will shift and the Seven Kingdoms will have to come together to survive against the White Walkers. Dragonglass is a major weapon against them and I think that the dragons will save the world in the end, though they may die in doing so. At least, that's what I think.

GRRM has a sense of humor to be sure and he loves a good twist, so I can't see something as seemingly "obvious" as that being the real ending either. I heard of an interview where he said that he chooses which characters live and which ones die based on whether or not his wife likes them. If she does, he kills them off. I've also heard him joke that the last two books will be nothing but descriptions of snow blowing across gravestones. I just hope beyond hope that he actually writes the darn things. Just like Patrick Rothfuss and the Kingkiller Chronicle. Get over yourself and finish it already!!!

  • FTR, if anyone watches Honest Trailers on Youtube, they did a seasons 1-3 GOT Honest Trailer. You will snort with laughter.
  • I just listened to a "Smooth" version of the Game of Thrones theme (from the opening of the show). My friend shared it on facebook and said he hoped that someone put together all the Cersei/Jaime moments to it. Smooth jazz GoT. Yay.

Now I must look up what Chipmunk referenced. Looking forward to confusing my coworkers with an outburst of snorting laughter. Does people good on Monday.

@shrekspeare The bastard sons of the north take the last name Snow. Thats how you know they're bastards. Im pretty sure that was mentioned in book #1... I don't think there is any relation since Jon Snows mother was just a woman Ned tupped in camp while campaigning during war. He took Jon home to raise him as he would his own Stark children.

The guy who got his dick cut off is Theon Greyjoy from the iron islands... Idk where that story line is going.

@MegTrashy is right about the last name Snow. It just means you're a bastard from the North. However, there is a lot of speculation in the fandom that Jon Snow's mother wasn't just some random woman or Ned Stark's at all but that he might actually be the child of Ned Stark's sister and Rhaegar Targaryen. I'd be really interested to see how that would play into the plot if it's true.

I'm so excited that GOT is back!! I think there was a lot of good set-up last night for some really interesting/exciting things to happen this season!

ETA: @Chipmunk415 - I saw that honest trailer! It was hilarious!

  • I could have sworn from book one they spoke of Jons mother... I could be totally wrong but for some reason this is just wedged into my brain.
  • @MegTrashy-I'm re-reeading the first book now and they DO discuss Jon's mother hinting that it may be Ned Stark and Ashara Dayne's child. They don't confirm anything but Ned is furious when Catelyn asks him about her specifically so it's one of the theories. However since he takes after Ned physically and Lyanna was said to share similar appearance it's possible that he's Lyanna and Rheager's child...I personally don't think so but maybe we'll find out!

Highborn bastards all have the same last name, dependent on the region. This is what I found on the interwebs: Flowers: The Reach, Hill: The Westerlands, Pyke: Iron Islands, Rivers: The Riverlands, Sand: Dorne, Snow: The North, Stone: The Vale of Arryn, Storm: The Stormlands, Waters: The Crownlands. Also, I love this show. So, so much. My FI has read all the books, whereas I am only halfway through the 3rd. He loves knowing what is about to happen and that I'm clueless. Argh! ETA: stupid iPad and no paragraphs/ line breaks!
  • I have all the books on Audio CD and I have been listening to them in the car! they're AWESOME!!! The narrator is the man of 1000 voices, I love his Tyrion. He makes the half man sound so creepy!

I love all the characters in the show! I love to hate them!!! expect Joffrey.
My sis tagged me in a photo and it was Jimmy Kimmel wearing a shirt that said Don't HASSLE the JOFF and it had king Joffrey's face! Too funny!
  • If Jamie got the one sword, who got the other one?
    image
  • Having read the books and knowing who was behind last night's action it is very fun listening to my FI's theories.

    Awesome episode.

  • @shrekspeare I think so. There's a lot going on with what happened last night and what is still to come but from what I remember (read the books a couple of years ago) it does say who did it/who was in on it. On of my FB friends posted who did it too when he was talking about it so hopefully no one was spoiled.

  • Ooh just saw the episode from last night.  SPOILER ALERT

Who gets the sword now?  And I think the fool did it because he seemed pretty ready to go.  But then he has talked to Sansa in the garden that one time so maybe they came up with it together.  But ugh, Tyrion :(  Also, Shay wouldn't have left, I don't think.

  • I just reread the books last year and to answer they do say in the books exactly who did the killing and how ( though it was slightly different from the show).  IIRC littlefinger explains it in a Sansa chapter.

Also, I don't know if I was just being judgy, but did it not look like the show was hinting at a potential future relationship between Bri and Jamie? Ladies who have read the books, do you remember this being a part of the book? I know that if there were something it would have been in book 4 and I flew through that book because it was extremely boring to me.

  • @jaydee4219 I haven't read the books yet (just the first one) but that did surprise me- even with the travels I never thought there was any kind of chemistry between Jamie and Brienne. I guess we'll see...

  • Yeah the hints towards it irked me. I could be totally wrong but I am almost postive there was nothing hinting towards it in the books.

Also, Cersei, isn't all to into Jamie anymore not because (well maybe partly because) he took soo long to get back to kings landing but because he isn't a whole man anymore (lack of hand).

  • Also, Tywin would probably take the sword now. Or they would save it to give to Joffrey's younger brother.

The real question is, is Margery still Queen? It wouldn't make sense if she's not, since she married Joffrey. But from the looks of the previews for the upcoming episode, she isn't?
They're probably going to try to marry her to Tommen, which would make sense because they recast him with an older actor this season. Also it's sort of custom to do so. Before Ned's older brother died, Catelyn was set to marry him!

I should hire George RR Martin as a wedding planner. He does a great job of making them all so memorable! :P

  • I am stoked that Jamie and Brienne are going to hook up. I posted it in my original response to this thread, and am excited my ship will not sink. Huzzah!

Also, is the bolded in the books? Because in the first episode of this season, it's Jamie that's anti banging his sister. (because he loves Brienne! gigglegiggle)

I have only watched season 1 of the show but have recently read all of the books. In the book Jamie arrives shortly after the wedding. First thing he does when he gets back is to hook up Cersei who is praying in the sept. Jamie wants to openly be with Cersei and marry her. Cersei doesn't want to do this because Tommen would no longer be king as his parentage is already in question. She freaks out saying Jamie has changed and asks him to leave. Things get worse between them after Tyrion tells Jamie all the people Cersei has been sleeping with while Jamie was gone.

As for Brienne and Jamie there are some hints to this in the book. I think there is one scene when they were traveling where she is naked and he thinks to himself that he surprisingly finds her attractive.

I also love hearing theories on who did it from those who haven't read the books. I think it is explained pretty well in the book who did it and who was in on it and how it was executed (not sure if it was shown the same in the show). I think you probably will find out in an episode or two.

Margery is technically "Queen Dowager" at this point as Joffrey's widow. However, Tommen is next in line to the throne, and unmarried. Tommen is still under age, which puts Cersei back in her position as Queen Regent- something you can tell she wasn't happy to give up when Joffrey married Margery.
  • It also seems that since they didn't consummate the marriage, she is kind of limbo as queen. Tommen will be next in line for king and Margery will be? I love this show!

It is in the books that much I remember. Cersei was hooking up with a different member of the kingsguard (I don't remember the name at all). Also in the first episode, It was Cersei that turned down Jamie's advances because "he took too long" as @chipmunk415 said.

  • In the books Jaime and Brienne are just friends.  No romantic anything.  She teaches him that he doesn't have to be the evil king slayer and he acts to restore his honor.  It's actually one of the things I really liked about the books.  I'm going to be annoyed if they end up hooking up.

  • Ah! I can finally read all this. Just caught up last night. First three seasons were so much better because I didn't have to wait until the next episode. I started them late and we totally marathoned them until they were over. I cannot wait until episode 3!!!

Also, thought my signature would be perfect for this.
