Petite Bridal Gowns

Hi! I am looking for a custom sewn wedding gown. I am just under 5ft and would like to order a gown to fit my unique needs. Any suggestions? I have been looking at ordering something from Etsy because many of the dresses I've seen can be ordered custom to measurements you send in. I would really like to get a gown with a fitted bodice and would like to buy something made for the measurements of  my torso so the bodice and skirt are proportionate for my body.... any suggestions out there?

Positive or negative reviews about Etsy shops?
Other sources for petite gowns?

Re: Petite Bridal Gowns

  • i would steer away from etsy most of those on etsy making wedding gowns are from china they are essentially posting stolen photos of designer dresses and passing them on as there own. Or  they are posting photos of dresses they have made but most are very see through and the materials are not that great.

i am 5'0 and i was able to find a gown in a normal bridal salon i would suggest calling up local salons in your area and see what gowns they have that will work for your frame.

i have a friend whos 4'11 and she was able to find her gown at davids bridal although hers was a short princesy style and this was like 9 years ago

morilee's dresses some come in custom lengths the website will let you know under each dress what one comes in what lengths

a good seemstress can make any dress work for your body. i would stay away from ballgowns as they tend to make you look even shorter and you will look lost in the gown.
  • Agreed PP. My dress is Mori Lee and it comes in custom lengths. Even if a dress is still a bit too long, a good seamstress can alter it to fit you perfectly.

Try not focusing on petite gowns as they are limted but finding a gown you love and have it altered.

  • I am 5'0 and have longer, athletic legs for as short as I am and a medium torso. I tried on a bunch of dresses at little boutique stores throughout my state. I just told the consultant what I was looking for and stressed that I don't want to look like a little girl, or lost, or like the dress is "wearing me." I liked the one-on-one attention I got because, they weren't terribly busy when I went so I was able to ask the seamstress about measurements for dresses I put on my "maybe" list. If you have a knowledgeable consultant and reputable, good seamstress the dress you choose can be altered properly so that it fits your body perfectly.

  • oh also google reviews on the salon and see what other brides say if it has lots of negative reviews then stay away
  • Also, check to see if the designers will measure for your dress hallow to hem.  The dress maker would then make your dress proportionate to your measurements.  I know that Demetrios gowns can be ordered that way.  They are sold at the Macy's Bridal Stores, if you have any locations near you.
  • With designers- not David's Bridal-  how do you know which gowns are available in petite?
  • I am 5'2.  I never asked in salons about petite sizes.  I tried on everything I wanted to and stood on a platform to better see how the dress laid.  I ordered my favorite one and I had it shortened during the alterations process.   Depending on the type of dress, most can be taken up.  Or, some can be ordered hollow to hem to get the correct size.  Don't focus on specific petite dresses.....you'll really limit yourself.
  • a good salon will know exactly what works good on your body type. if you limit your self to just petite dresses you choices wont be as many as regular dresses

as a petite person you should stay away from ball gowns they will make your shorter than you are and you will be lost in the gown..

mermaids a-lines fit and flares are some good options.

go to designers websites look at the gowns  pick some styles you like do the store locator on the website to find stores in your area that are authorized to sell those dresses. and go from there
