Assigning someone to usher or sit at the guest book table

Re: Assigning someone to usher or sit at the guest book table

  • I had a guestbook attendant.

JUST KIDDING.  I had a photobooth attendant (paid vendor) and the package came with a guestbook.  Maybe my friends just won't admit to it, but I'm 99% certain the photobooth attendant who was with it all night didn't have to tell anyone how to use the guestbook.

The only positions of honor involve being in the ceremony- these typically include performing it, reading/singing/playing something in it, being in the bridal party, etc.  Ushers are a borderline position, if they're needed (older relatives needing help to their seats, etc) it makes sense, but it isn't as if the groomsmen can't do both in those cases.

Ok, I will say I have 36 cousins on my dad side of the family.  As my aunts and uncles got married the would give special jobs for a kids from each family, usually the girls would pass out bubble and the boys would be little ushers.  My two older cousin always got to do the guest book and the younger ones were flower girls and ring bearers and mini brides and grooms.  They all loved it. They usually went to a department store and got dress and suits that matched the wedding colors.  Some how because of numbers and ages (they tried to pair up sizes and ages) I got skipped and never got to be in the wedding.  I was always so bummed.  For the kids in my family is was a wonderful honor and a great learning opportunity too.  They were treated as part of the wedding party, they took part in the wedding activities. As a kid I would have loved to do that, as and adult I think it would be more of a task.

Ushers, are a different story.  To me thats not so much of a task and is more honorable.  I have been a candle lighter for a wedding recently, I was excited about it.  Later I changed my mind because the bride was a BZ but not becuase I had a lesser job from the bridesmaids.
  • @a12049, I think it is different when the people assigned to those things are children.  I can see an 8 year old LOVING being the guestbook guru and getting complimented on their outfit and helpfulness.  I can't see an adult doing anything but pretending to feel honored because they don't want to upset the bride.

I agree, as a kid it can be a thrill, especially if all your cousins got to do it. But as an adult, it sucks lol.

  • @summersky I have a friend whose sister did exactly that to her--"Come to my party. Oh, and start chopping crudites."

This baby knows exactly how I feel
  • I think a guest book is pretty explanatory. Pen + book = sign if you want to. OP your sister is 24, not 8. She is an immediate family member. Instead of manning a guest book, she should be enjoying the cocktail hour, the h'ors devours, and celebrating your wedding with you as a sister.

I know that many people chewed you out, and that a majority of posters disagree with a majority of your statements. To the person who said that we are "rude" you should check out one of the OPs threads on the NEY board. Then understand when she said that she feels sorry for our SOs, and that she'd be praying for us, lets just say that we weren't exactly "thrilled". I understand that you view our words as hostile, but in all fairness, we are allowed to express an opinion on a public post within an online forum. Over all, we can all agree to disagree, but we are allowed to express an opinion.

    Mini brides creep. me. out.
Me too, I think they are kinda stupid. As a kid, I wanted to be a mini bride or flower girl so bad though.  As an adult, I have been in way to many weddings, now I will only agree to be in weddings for my closest friends and family and be happy being a guest for the others.

Sooo I just read some other posts by OP.  Maybe its hard for her to see why these jobs aren't an honor to adults, but are to a child, because at 17 yo she is still a child.
  • The OP doesn't seem to be around anymore. I hope that her mother got wind of the plans, grounded her, and took away her computer privileges.

I doubt that it was ever much more than teenage fantasy.
  • @ohannabelle It's probably HS finals time, she'll be back when it's summer break.
  • I know I'm late, but if anybody is thinking of assigning their 8-year-old niece to gift guard duty, please be sure to file all necessary paperwork with the Secret Service and Jean Claude Van-Damme WAY AHEAD OF TIME so that everyone can be sure the niece is properly trained and vetted for her gift guarding duties.

    Good day to you all.

  • My sister is not in my WP because I did not want her to have the added financial stress I knew it would be.  Instead I am having her and my fiance's sister-in-law read a poem each so that they are involved like the rest of the immediate family.

I am not having ushers or anyone stand with the gift table.  I had actually not even thought about it.

Did you ever watch the SATC episode where they spoke about how guarding the guestbook is such a crappy task to be given at a wedding? And it's true. First off, I would probably just sit there and not tell grown adults to sign a book, and polish off drinks because I would be dying of boredom at such a mundane task. Adults know to sign a guestbook, and they won't if they don't want to, no matter who is guarding the table.

And there is no way I would leave my fingerprints around. I watch way too much Discovery ID for that. I also had to get fingerprinted at my job, and I would not feel comfortable leaving them anywhere else.
I was thinking the same! I believe the exact quote is, "It's a bullshit job."

I had no idea leaving my fingerprint around was so risky. Seriously. Yowza. I did it once at a baby shower but if asked again, I'll go the smudge route.

Interesting. Do most people want their exes back? I certainly don't want him. Maybe you can give him to someone else instead?
