did anyone change their mind about the dress?

I haven't gone shopping yet but plan to do so soon. Since before I was engaged I had my heart set on a specific dress but since looking online, I have fallen in love with a totally different gown. Luckily I haven't bought the original dress yet...Has anyone bought a dress and then changed their mind about it? I'm so afraid to buy a dress then feel like I made the wrong choice or see something I like better and wish I had taken more time to search. Should I wait longer to go shopping and find a few that I really like??

I picked out a number of favorites before I went to try on dresses. I tried on all of the first choices on my list plus a couple the consultant recommended. The dress I thought was "the one" from photos online was beautiful and very flattering, but didn't hold a candle to the one I ultimately chose, which was the very last dress I added to my favorites before the shopping trip and was "meh" about. I absolutely LOVE my dress and the pictures online just didn't do it justice. Like CMGragain said, keep an open mind. You will likely be very surprised by what looks good on versus photos online.

  • i had a whole 3 ring binder with plastic inserts and every photo from magazines and online i could find, most of the magazine photos were anorexic looking models in dresses, i am plus size street 20-22 and none of the magazines had much plus sizes,

i went to three salons one a bridal consigment but older designer dresses nothing fit right

second place had lots of plus but the picures i showed her the dresses would have not done anything for me. had two dresses narrowed down but needed to sleep on it

went to another shop with some plus size not as many as the website claims the sales people were pushy and the owner wanted to know when i left why i didn't purchase anything. i said i didn't see anything i liked

dresses are a huge purchase you cant base it off a picture you need to try on the dresses first to see if even that fit is right. you may love the mermaid gowns but when you try them on they may not be what you invisioned
  • I think you just need to try on a few to know. I fell in love with my dress from an online photo (Claire Pettibone Orange Blossom). I went and tried on a few different dresses at two stores but I couldn't get the dress out of my mind.
I was worried about the dress not "fitting" my body type, but I decided I just needed to put it on and either move on, or buy it. I bought it and had no interest in shopping again. I think once you have on the right dress you feel comfortable in it, and you won't question "what if there's a better one out there?"
  • There was a dress I really liked online, and it was the first dress I tried on in the bridal shop. It looked horrible on me. I almost didn't want to come out of the dressing room, it was so bad.

My dress is nothing special when you look it up online, but it's absolutely beautiful, and is really flattering on me. My sister would have never picked her dress from seeing it online either. You have to try them on, and be open minded. Good luck!

I just bought my dress today and it was way different then the pictures I was in love with. I def agree with @CMGragain anything looks fantastic on a skinny giraffe model but very different on regular body types.

I felt really frustrated after trying on about 20 dresses that were all my dream style dress and I started thinking the whole 'magical feeling' only existed on tv. Then the sales associate picked out a dress that was very different and it was completely magical and perfect, it felt like the dress was made for my body.

Go to the stores, try on your favorite dresses, but be open to other options. You will know when you find your dress.

  • I had specific thoughts about what I wanted-- straps, v neck, possibly lace. There were a few I tried on like this that looked quite nice on me. Just for the heck of it, my mom picked up a strapless, sweetheart neckline ball gown. I tried it on to appease her... And ended up falling in love with it! Not too poofy, just a little bling, and the bodice fits perfectly. Keep an open mind, definitely!
  • In answer to your question "has anyone bought a dress and then changed their mind about it?"- yes, I did. Most bridal stores don't take returns and I am in the process of trying to sell my dress online. It isn't a big deal and sometimes unavoidable. If it helps, I think I made a couple big mistakes while dress shopping: a) rushing into buying a dress (I had been at the salon for hours and felt I needed to buy a dress then and there), and b) choosing a dress that others loved but wasn't really my style. I later realized I wanted to feel confident and comfortable on my wedding day so chose a very different dress that was more me.
  • I tried dresses at three different shops before I was finished. Count me in for one who did not ultimately buy something very similar to her "dream" style. Don't get me wrong; I liked it just fine and it was pretty. I just liked another one better, and it turned out to be something I never expected would look good on my figure.
It's cool to bargain hunt, but you really need to try some different things on to see what things flatter you and feel comfortable.
  • I never even got to try on my 'dream' dresses that I saw and loved in the catalogs.  Ultimately I got a dress in the same shape, but with different detailing.  I love my dress though I'm a little disappointed I didn't get to try the others on (but I think that's more because I liked playing 'dress up' with all the pretty dresses).

  • I just said yes to my dress today! It was actually the very first dress I fell in love with online. I thought I would probably hate it once I tried it on (that seems to happen a lot) but it was perfect. I still have a whole year until my wedding though. There was another dress I was really in love with but I'm getting married on the beach in Punta Cana. It would have been way too hot even though it was absolutely gorgeous. I think I would have passed out in the heat. I'm glad I went with my dress. It's much more comfortable, lighter, and it will look fantastic on the beach.

That's amazing! My FI an I were just talking about how much we LOVED Punta Cana. We've been before and as much as I would like to go somewhere different for the honeymoon we're actually considering going back there. It was so inexpensive but the experience was as good as that at places twice the cost. Congratulations on finding your dress and good luck at your destination wedding! (We saw a few on the beach when we went and they looked beautiful)
  • I went in with the idea of getting something super fitted & lace head to toe. Once I started trying dresses on I felt so itchy and uncomfortable and really disappointed that my "dream" dress wasn't working out. My mom wanted me to try on a ballroom gown to humor her, and I just felt like a bride instantly and that was the one. So definitely go in with an open mind!!
  • My dream dresses were all out of my budget. I tried on so many, and I got frustrated. I never had a crying "omg its magical this is it!!!" moment. A lot of the dresses looked nice on me. I felt pretty in many, and thought a lot suited my figure. It was exhausting trying dress after dress and I couldn't make up my mind. I felt indecisive. I finally went with one of the dresses from the second time I went shopping (out of 6 shopping trips). It was the first one where I looked at myself and really felt like "oh! you look pretty!" and had some of the features of the way over budget dresses that I always admired. But it was also a little different. I expected to get a slightly poofier dress. Mine has a chiffon bottom that while not a sheath, is still fairly slim in proportion. It was also a really good price. I'm sure there is another dress out there I will could like more, but I didn't buy that one. I deleted all my old pinterest pictures of wedding dresses. Go shopping and try on some dresses. Pick one that suits your taste and your budget that makes you feel pretty. And then don't look back!
  • I bought a dress too soon and regretted it. I bought my actual dress after I realized how unhappy I was with the first one and have completely stopped looking at dresses. I now have 2 wedding dresses, but only plan on wearing one.

Luckily, the first dress I bought was on 90% clearance, so I didn't lose too much money.

  • I was in absolute LOVE with a mermaid gown I saw and I put it on and hated it instantly.  I realized all mermaids would make me feel awful.  I tried on about a dozen dresses until my mother pulled a rather boring one off the rack and urged me to '"try it on anyway.  Let's just look at the options."

Well that dress was so flattering on me, and so pretty.  I sneak pics of it at work for a pick-me-up (FI can't see it so I look at it when he isn't around) and I still love it so much!  Turns out, A-Lines are the most flattering on me.  The one style I originally ruled out!

I agree with all the PP's: Try on all styles.  The one you can't stop thinking about is the one you should get.  Instincts, girl.
