Eye-rolling baby names

Re: Eye-rolling baby names

  • My name will probably be an old lady name someday, because it was SUPER popular for like a minute in 1964, and then not so much after that until my mom decided it was perfect for me 19 years later.

Someday, Jaxxon will be an old man's name.

  • Ooooo Helena... I love how it's old-fashioned yet it's the name of a town in Napa Valley that FI and I just adore.  I'm half serious that I would consider it now for both reasons.  Make fun of me all you want, lol.

For some reason I can't quote it, but this is in response to the old names.  One of my very favorite names is Adelaide and I've heard from others that it sounds old.  When a friend and I were talking about what we would name our kids, she said "Well that's old fashioned, but you could spell it like A-d-e-l-a-y-d!"  No.

You can call her Addie and she will be awesome and love cake!
I've been campaigning for Adaline/Adeline (I think the second spelling is correct, but the first is how I first saw the name) When I first told my Mom that name she didn't like it, but loves the nickname Addie!
I love Adeline!  One of my former coworkers has a very sweet daughter named Adeline and I think it's a lovely name.  I think they call her Addie, or maybe Ada.  There's a good nickname in there.

I'm also a big fan of the old-fashioned names.  I think Greta Gerwig's name is awesome.

And hey, if you want to give your kid a trendy name or something cultural, knock yourself out.  There are better things in life than finding your name on a souvenir (I never could as a a kid, but I've noticed more children with my name now so maybe it's making a comeback)?  But it's the weird spellings of common names that really get me.  You're dooming your kid to a life of constantly correcting people, and potentially having important things really screwed up.

Case in point: one of my friends is named Emilie.  She finally just caved and goes by Emily at school and on her professional email address, because so many people were emailing her with the common spelling instead of the correct one.  I also knew a Lissa who eventually started going by Lisa.

My name is like that. There's about a million "correct" ways to spell my name but for the past 4 years or so, every single person I've met has tried to spell my name one specific way (not the right way). I've seriously contemplated just going with the way everyone tries to spell it to make life easier.

The paper just released out top baby names, along with some unique ones.  Apparently the double x was popular with boys, such as Daxx, Jaxx and Jixxr.  Girls got the double z with Azza, Fezza and Izzy.  I'm hating the double x especially.
I've always loved Izzy for a girl for a shortened version of Isabella. Because I always loved the name Isabella. Then Twilight happened.

I have a guy friend named Izzy, it's his nickname for reasons no one really knows. There's a very good chance he nicknamed himself Izzy.

Stupid box.  I actually don't mind Izzy, and teach one who go by that since she's one of about a million Isabellas in her class.  I'm having more issues with the boys ones and the double X.

My dad is a huge Who fan. We used to watch the classics together when I was little and then the re-vamp came out and FI said "What's that about" and now she's one of us.
  • The radio station I was listening to this morning on my way to work was reading the top 10 least popular names in the US for last year, I nearly died laughing. Apparently there are boys out there named: Clever, Klever, Furious, Happy, Boulder, Colorado, Zurich, Chevelle, Subaru ,Pacer, Tripper, Trotter, Edge, Gatsby. And girls named: Fancy, Happy, Icy, Shiny, Skylit, Snowy, Sweet, Crosslyn, Gatlynn, Kenzingtyn, Mandalynn, Oakland, Portlynn, Sierraleone, Icesis, Jazzman, Fergie, and Tuba. WTF is wrong with some people. I went sort of traditional with my kids' names Caitlyn and William. Caitlyn's dad picked out the name, I just didn't like how it looked with the K. Changed it to a C like mine and my mom's names.

I have to admit... I am one of those who gave my child a different spelling on a classic name. My mom did it to me, and for some reason I'm like "I must make it a tradition" She's six now and I've actually seen a few kids with spellings like hers, but I do cringe a little now because I realize how judged it is in the world.

I have an old lady name. But I was named after my mother. I would kind of like to name my daughter (if I have one) after me/us. I like old fashioned names - Dolores, Helena, Gertrude. ie, isn't Baby Gertie so adorable!
I like these names too but since the "Mulva" episode of Seinfeld Dolores will never be the same.
  • Oh god. I'm a teacher, I could go on about weird/unique/stupid names for days but here are a few that I've taught:

Falcon (M), Lotus (M), Serenity, Harmony, China, Asia, Precious, Cruz (F), Ugness (that's right... Ugness), Angus, Tahira and Tahara (twin girls, fairly normal names for their culture but I can't stand the rhyming), Jauvarn (M), Saffron (M), Saffwon (M), Lolli (M)

    and the list goes on....

Irene was a serious name on our list until BBC Sherlock. Yeah.
  • While I'm on a computer and able to post: I've been following this thread for a while but haven't posted because of TK's screwing up mobile posting.

My great-aunt had three children. She named her son Gavin* and everyone called him Gav or Gavvie. She hated the fact that he was being called by a nickname instead of his actual name, so when her daughter was born she named her Jay*, thinking that you can't really nickname that and she'd get called by her proper name. Wrong. Everyone called her Jaysie (rhymes with Daisy) or Jakie. She tried again with her other son, naming him Scott*, but he ended up being called Scottie. You honestly just can't win.

My brother's name is Jonathan. We always, ALWAYS called him Nathan at home. When he got to school, the school started calling him Jono, and it stuck. That's what he goes by now, two decades later.

*I changed the names, just in case, but the real names are quite similar.

FI and I have decided that, should we ever change our minds and have children, we're naming them solid, traditional names that have multiple nickname options, and THEY can decide what they're going to go by.

It's extremely common here to go by your second name. In Afrikaans culture, it's common for the first name to be a family name spanning several generations (so son would be Jan Daniel Surname, father would be Jan Gabriel Surname, grandfather would be Jan Frederik Surname). I'm not sure why they do it that way and not family name second, but that's how it's done. And in many of the tribal cultures, it's common for children to have an "African" name and a "Christian" name - for example, a girl might be name Nokuthula Nancy Surname and go by Nancy. This is dying out though, with more parents choosing to give only an "African" name or only a "Christian" name.

@MagicInk PLEASE tell me you're going to build a replica of the Doctor/Melody/River's crib for little Amelia Rose!!!

We once had an Emily and an Emilee on staff at the same time.  Emily got to be called Emily and Emilee got to be called Double E Emily.  Yeah, there are snickers there, but neither one wanted to go by "E-dawg" so what are you gonna do?

My dogs are named Chauncey and Buddy Moose so if I ever have kids, at least I won't have a conflict moment with naming them for my dogs.

I was thinking of this thread yesterday when my co-worker told me she was pregnant.  I almost blurted out "don't name it something stupid" but I'll save that until she starts running names by me.
  • There was a "where'd you get your name" segment on the radio this morning... someone called in and said "I named my son after a soap opera! He's Jackson but I spell it differently. I was just so infatuated with Jasper Jax, but my husband wouldn't let me name our baby Jax. He agreed with Jackson, but I said I get to pick the spelling! And spelled it j-a-x-x-o-n." I almost swerved into another lane I was rolling my eyes so hard. If you ever have to say "it's ________, but I spell it differently," YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. Damn DJ's told her "that's such a cool name!"

I spell my name ending in an "ie" but now where I live there a suburb nearby that's spelled with my same name but ending in "y." Nobody ever spells it right because of the name of the city.

Why the fuck would you want to name your kid after Jasper Jax? The Jackal is a cooler name and Spinellie is a way better character.

What cracks me up about names like those is you know ALLLLL those parents thought their little precious being was going to have a name just as super unique as them... NOPE, at least 4 other kids with that name that year. Nice try. Then they'll have the mommyfights like on STFU Parents because someone "stole their name." Might as well just name your kid Michael.

I guess there are a lot of Wreck it Ralph fans with 63 Vanellope. Honestly I'm surprised there were only 7 Prims with the popularity of The Hunger Games. I wonder how many girls got the name Katness or boys got named Gale.

I happen to like Michael. ;) At least everyone knows how to spell your name, right?

All of these names make me want to barf except Pemberley.  I really hope those 8 sets of parents are true Austen fans.
