Sharing a hotel room

Gah...this is now the second time it has happened. Why do I get asked to share a room when I go to professional conferences? It bugs me so much. I am sorry, I'm just not interested in sharing a room with a stranger/co-worker I barely know. The latest request was from the conference itself because the hotel they chose was overbooked and they needed people to share or we might/would likely be moved to another hotel off-site. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to suffer awkwardness for your poor planning abilities. This is not an appropriate solution to, "Oh crap the hotel can't handle everyone." It's fine if you need to send me to another hotel, but don't make me share with someone who isn't even from my college!

That's crazy talk.  Who does that?  We've exceeded our capacity, so please, enjoy having a double room with a complete, or at best, virtual, stranger! 

Can you imagine if an airline did that? We've overbooked, so who wants to share a seat?

I wouldn't want to share either. Sharing a small space with a stranger where you sleep and use the bathroom is so personal. It would give me anxiety. I am a light sleeper and would worry about stuff like if the other person snored. Definitely poor planning. Sharing is fine when you are a college kid in the dorms. As an adult professional, nope.

Ugh, I feel your pain and am so sorry =( Sharing rooms with strangers/people I don't know well gives me horrible anxiety. I had to share a bed with someone I barely knew at FSILs bachelorette and it was a most miserable experience.

That was what blew me away. If it is because you want to cut down as cost as my employer so you can send more people, ok, I'll complain and groan but I understand it and will deal. But this is just ridiculous.

I would never ever, even if they fired me over it, share a bed with someone else who isn't my DH. NEVER! I'm sorry you were subjected to that.

I've shared rooms with coworkers when going to conferences, but a lot of that has to do with travel funding. I would NEVER share a hotel room with a stranger.

So we put on an annual conference for about 4000 veterinary specialists each year (read: as staff, we are there for 7 - 10 days, working 14+ hour days, and basically hating each other through most of it). The very first year I started, they made me share with a coworker. Who snored. I almost quit.

Said conference is taking place in Nashville next in two weeks and guess what? Hotels are waaaaay sold out. Apparently it's the Country Music Festival at the same time & the old Executive Director who booked the space 7 years ago failed to block enough rooms for our peeps. As such, there will be a TON of room sharing going on. Not cool.

I've done this too, and am willing to again for travel budget reasons. I get it. I'll complain about it to my husband about it, but I get it.

Good lord! That sounds awful! And really poor planning on their part to hold a major conference in a major city at the same time another big event is going on. It stinks that someone making decisions seven years ago means you guys are now having to deal with headaches.

Oh I forgot to mention that they did invite us to let them know, "whether you have a preferred roommate or would like us to match you with someone." What is this? College dorm assignment? No.

I think sharing rooms, even if it is a co-worker you are close with, in a professional setting is wholly inappropriate.

I used to work for a company that would require staff going to trade conferences to share rooms.  Either don't send as many staff or cough up the funds for everyone to have their own room.

When I was in choir we had to travel for a competition and it was decided we'd sleep four to a room, two people in each bed. Except the choir I was in had none of my friends in it and I was out sick the day we picked room so I just got randomly assigned to one of the girls' rooms that had 3 people. It was awful. But I did get my own bed because they were deeply homophobic and afraid I'd "do stuff" to them in their sleep, so one slept on the floor instead of in bed with me. 

I hate sharing rooms with strangers. Sharing rooms with people I know, fine. But most people don't want to share with me. It takes me forever to fall asleep, I apparently hum/sing in my sleep sometimes (FI finds it cute), and I always wake up very very confused about everything.

I wouldn't care to share a room with someone I know well, much less some random person, coworker or not. 

That said, I once had to share a room with FI's aunt, who I had just met...it went like this: FI, his mom, his aunt, and I arrive at his sister's convent.  We go to the guest apartment they've prepared for us, and his mom and aunt inform us that they'll share a room and we can have the other room   I've just met these people, and this *is* at a convent...I smell trap, and tell FI that he needs to straighten this out immediately.  Long story short, he stays with mom, I get snoring aunt who decides that 4 am is the perfect time for everyone to get up.

Sharing rooms with random people never ends well.

My DH snores. I would SO prefer the singing, lol.

Wow! That is just several layers of awkward no one should have have to go through. No wonder your FI decided you were a keeper after putting up with that for his family.

If I go to store openings I have to share a hotel room with another company employee. Usually it's someone from my store, or in the same department from a different store. It's done to save cash money for the company.

They also do the same thing at our yearly conference.

It sucks.

My one goal in life right now is to gain a promotion/get a new job somewhere else. Yes the raise would be nice, and further autonomy over my work would even better, but it would also have the added benefit of meaning I would not have to go back to the annual conference we always go to and share a room with a member of our staff I barely know.

I said something along those lines to them, but then realized I got my own bed and could sleep in the middle of it. 

FI says it's not even like songs, just kind of random words and sounds.

You know, I would totally exploit that opportunity too! I hoped you starfished the bed while they enjoyed the ground. They totally deserved it for being jerkwads.

I can handle sharing a room though I don't like it. Sharing a bed with anyone other than FI or a close buddy is out of the question.

I'm sharing a room with my boss for a few nights last week. We're tight on money and the hotel we're at is crazy expensive so I offered to share. I'm not excited about it but it's the right call.

When I was in college, I went to a research conference. Our college organized with another college and we had to sleep 2 to a room. I ended up being the odd girl out and got paired with another girl I didn't know from the other college. We got to the room and there was only a king bed. We shared it. I think the couch in the room would have pulled out into another bed but I honestly didn't mind. 

I think it would be a little different with a co-worker though. I don't need someone I work with all up in my business.

I absolutely can't and won't share a room. Because poop. 

I am not close enough to any of my coworkers to share a hotel room lavatory, or associated odors. And sure as hell not a stranger.

 Bed be damned, bathroom sharing is worse. I couldn't stand to be that close to a stranger pooping. That just freaks me out.

I'm sharing a hotel room now with a girl from another college. She's constantly correcting me, ignoring me, and just overall rude. I have chosen shows and channels that I know are pissing her off. sorrynotsorry!

We have a weeklong training coming up for store managers and I know I'm going to have to share a room with another store manager (likely one that I've never even spoken to).

This really brings back horrible memories of class trips where we even shared a bed. I keep get anxiety over it and have to keep reminding myself that they won't do THAT. Ugh.

Plus it'll be the longest that I've ever been away from Fi so I'm going to be an emotional wreck and just want to cry myself to sleep in private.
