Do you love or hate when people ask you questions in your career field?

I'm an accountant and I encourage people to ask me for help with their taxes. But I know some nurses who hate that people are always hitting them up with their illness questions.

Well I love when people ask me about my work...usually. Some people try to ask me leading questions so they can lecture me on how I need a real job, or how wrong tattoos are. Look I don't care if you do or don't want one, but don't ask me questions just to lecture me. I'm smarter now, I'm much better at figuring out leading questions and avoiding them.

I know FI is split on hate and love. She loves to talk about what she does and explain what it is and why she does it. And she has no problem giving some general legal advice. But she gets annoyed at the idea that she should help everyone always with their legal problems for free because they're friends.

I work for a health insurance broker so I'm constantly getting questions about the ACA, how whatever plan they have works, is plan a or plan b a better option, etc. I don't mind it too much but then again, my work is kind of boring.

I have always wanted to ask a tattoo artist about eleventy-bazillion questions, because it totally fascinates me.

I work in the hospitality industry.  People most just hit me up for discounted rooms.

People always ask DH about food.  He loves talking about food so he doesn't mind.  The only time he gets annoyed is when they expect him to cook at their homes.  He doesn't mind helping and he has been know to kick people off the grill or out of the kitchen.  He hates when they invite him specifically to cook.   He wants to volunteer not it to be expected.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I'm a social worker studying to be a therapist, and I really don't like getting asked questions. It's usually people wanting me to diagnose them or others with some crazy mental illness, and which drug would I recommend? Social work therapists don't do either of those. Especially when it's based on a 5 minute run-down of the person. I had a professor tell me that I can't be my family's therapist.

I also hate when people try to get me to tell them the craziest thing I've seen so far. Social workers have very strict confienditality rules, and why would I make my clients your entertainment? Gross.

I don't mind when people ask me how certain organizations or programs work, and how to access them. That is not a big deal.

I love it because I love my work and will take any chance I get to talk about it. But I don't often get these questions (not many people understand what I do). If I was a nurse or accountant, I'd probably find it more annoying.

But, like @MagicInk, I don't like it when people use questions as an opening to complain about my workplace. I work for a major university that's had it's share of scandal and issues, but I'm not going to walk around complaining about it with strangers!

People mainly ask me what it is I do exactly. I tell them I work and recreation and they are all like, "What is that exactly?" Even though I have explained it to my family a billion times they still don't get it.

I love it because it can often lead to interesting discussions and I always appreciate it when people want to expand their education. I really love it when high schoolers ask questions.

Hahaha that is how I feel about the company I work for. I do accounting here, and the company does what's called Electronic Components Frequency Control Devices. Apparently it's like a computer chip that regulates the tempertaure or frequency inside a device. Like whatever computer chip keeps a microwave at a certain temp or something like that. I'm still not really positive, so when people ask me what company I work for I just say "we make computer chips" lol.

I hate when people ask me about my job.  My title at my job does not do a very good job of explaining what I do and honestly, I just do whatever is asked of me by my manager so I tend to tell people that I am an "Ad Hoc Bitch."  Also, what I do for a living really isn't useful to anyone so when people ask me about my job it is just them trying to make small talk which I am not good at.

It depends on my job. My work study job, students mainly ask questions like whats the answer to number 5. I ignore those and will only help those who want to learn. My museum jobs I love answering questions because a lot of people are truly interested. Except those trying to "save" me and tell me that I need to see the light of religion.

Because I would totally be a tattoo artist with no tats. I love them and wish I could get one, but I can't make that big of a commitment. Plus FI doesn't like them and doesn't want them on me.

I personally wouldn't trust an artist with no tattoos. lol

@magicink I ask my artist some weird and probably annoying question, but when you're in the chair for 8 hours you gotta keep some sort of conversation going! We have talked about some dirty stuff! lol

I don't really, mostly because I'm not super into reality TV. But I know one of them has come on when I've been at the gym, and I watched then. It was which ever one has Pete Wentz. They were doing pin-ups which was kind of cool because I love pin ups.

I did watch Inked, which was about Cary Hart's tattoo shop. But I just like Cary Hart. And I watched Miami Ink for a while. Never got into LA Ink. Kat Von Dee kind of annoyed me. I'm not sure why. Though I was happy to see a woman tattoo artist.

When my friend got her first tattoo I wasn't an artist yet (I was an apprentice) so I didn't do it. But I went with her and to distract her from the pain (she's an admitted wuss, she hissed at the antiseptic because it was cold), we sang show tunes. At first we thought we were annoying the guy, until he started singing along.

I'm usually quiet when I'm getting work done on me. But I'm a weirdo and find it super relaxing. When I got my first tattoo done I was really nervous and the guy told me to focus on the pressure of his hand on my back and nothing else. It totally relaxed me and it still does.

Not any tattoo artists without tattoos, but I have known piercers without piercings (aside from like their ears). I'd probably raise my eyebrows at an artist with no tats, but figure they might still be a good artist. But I'd be asking so many questions about why they don't have tats.

I'm in IT so am asked questions about computers. No sweat until someone asks me about Twitter or Instagram. Then, I'm like, well I do giant business applications with complex mathematical computations. You can ask my kid about Twitter and Instagram. My husband is an attorney and people ask him for advice regularly. He just pulls out his business card and asks them to call his office during business hours.

What...what kind of museum do you work in that would lead people to think you need religion? Also, where is it, what are the hours of operation, and do I need to buy tickets before hand? Because it sounds like my kind of place.

I don't mind it. I like the company I work for. It's not exciting work though, so I don't think anyone really knows what I do. All my friends just know that I work for an insurance company, but they wouldn't know the details of my job. Everyone always assumes that I sell them insurance though, when I tell them the company I work for. I'm like, you do realize there's a lot more to insurance than sales, right?

hahaha its nothing badass just a natural history museum and a childrens science museum. Because I work with fossils in the lab and a living/touch tank for Chesapeake species. I've told kids about how horse shoe crabs have been around for 500 million years. I've been called satans monkey.

I like talking about the research I do, but I will only provide vague answers to questions when I don't know the person asking them. Some of my research can be controversial so I don't share that information. I had to have a talk with DH about being more discrete about what he tells people after he blurted out to a couple we just met one sentence that hit on every possible thing that some one could have an issue with.

My fiancé and I watched Best Ink once. His ex was a tattoo artist competing on it, and he found it randomly while channel surfing. It may be a creeper move, but it's not like she went on TV saying, "I hope no one sees me."

As far as my job goes, I'm a teacher. I love helping people whenever I can. What I don't like is when people find out I used to teach high school math, and they assume I'll be a free weekly tutor. I'll help now and then, sure. I'm not going to promise an hour every Thursday though.
