What kind of veil to go with my dramatic gown?

Hi, I'd love some suggestions on what veil would look nice with this dramatic floral-ruffled gown I fell in love with :) I have no pictures of myself in it yet but I will be ordering it soon.

Floor length veils or veils with a lot of lace are not really an option but other than that I have no clue. I have really short dark brown hair (crop cut with side bangs basically) and am leaning towards wearing a small tiara with the veil.

Re: What kind of veil to go with my dramatic gown?

  • Why are cathedral length veils not an option?  If you go with a raw edge cathedral length veil (1 tier or at the most 2 tiers) I think it would flow well with your dress and even more grandeur and drama.

If you want to go with a shorter veil I wouldn't go with anything shorter then a fingertip length veil.  With that veil you could have a small amount of embellishment (maybe scattered rhinestones).

Whatever length you go with I think you just need to keep the veil on the plain side while you let the dress shine.

  • I agree with Maggie.  No shorter then fingertip.  That would be my choice.  Although I think a cathedral veil would be nice too.  Definitely simple so it adds to your dress not distracts.  It is beautiful by the way!

There is a simple veil that is "cascade cut".  The edges are not cut straight but in alternating curves.  This type of veil has a bound edge, but it gives a slightly different effect, and would complement the skirt of your gown.  We got ours here:http://www.whitedovebridal.com/

I'm not a fan of tiaras unless you are royalty.

Thank you, everyone! I'm just not into the look of cathedral length veils and I also think it might be a little too much with my dress. But as always that's just a question of personal taste of course.

A lot of you suggested not shorter than fingertip? Can you explain why? I really haven't given much thought or research to veils.. how will it change my look?

Simple is a good idea. No lace, I'm with you on that.

I'm really into that cascading veil you posted, CMGragain! I think the rounded edges would go well with the floral ruffles of my dress.

I didn't see myself wearing a tiara until I put one on. It really doesn't look like a crown, more like a pretty headband or something and its rather flat, too. Embellished with the same kind of stones used in my bodice.

I surprisingly loved the look because since my hair is so short I will not be able to have a very bridal hairdo. This will give my hairstyle some bridal feel and I felt very pretty with it.

  • I think the cathedral length would work well. It's dramatic, but so is the dress, so they would go well together. I agree with people who said no shorter than fingertip. I like fingertip length veils, but the shoulder length ones tend to stick out and nt flatter most looks. They seem childish to me.
  • I think you should try on styles to see what they look like with the dress before ordering a veil. How you wear your hair will also affect the way the veil compliments the entire look. I agree that fingertip is a great length and anything shorter is generally not overly flattering unless the person wearing one is tiny (birdcage veils are a whole other area).
  • Thanks again! I will for sure be trying on different styles as soon as my gown arrives. I just wanted to get and idea first and then be able to tell the consultant what kinds of veils I'd like to try out.
I have worn an elbow length (probably this isn't the correct name for it..it just stopped at my elbows) veil with another gown which is slightly shorter than fingertip but I will definitely compare different lengths

  • I agree with others that a simple finger length veil will flow nicely with your dress & not take away from it. I had short hair for my wedding two (about 2 inches on top & much shorter everywhere else). I wore a thin blinged out headband. It added a little something to my hair as an accessory and I was able to keep it in after taking my veil off. Fingertip and elbow length maybe the same thing depending on where you had it positioned on your head. Like if you put it on the top of your head compared to the back. Even with my short hair my stylist was able to get it to stay in the middle-top of the back of my head.

Yes, what @CMGragain said re: tiaras. This isn't prom.  Or a gypsy wedding TV show.  No tiara.

Do you for sure want to wear a veil? I think the dress is so elaborate that it stands nicely on its own, without a veil.

Thank you for your concern but I didn't ask for advice on the tiara. I mentioned it as additional info on my look. That's practicially decided. And I made my point earlier on why I want to wear this headband-like tiara. The way you put it in your post sounds like I personally WILL be looking like I'm a bride in a gypsy wedding or going to prom and that's a bit rude to say when you haven't even seen me with it. It's simple and elegant as opposed to tacky but to each their own.

@ElcaB: I'm pretty convinced that I want to wear a veil for the ceremony at least. To me, it just adds to that bridal feeling and I liked how it looked on me. Of course I will have to see how it goes with my dress when it comes. I will probably take it off after the ceremony, though

I'm thinking a birdcage would look lovely, but not the kind with netting. Something like this, perhaps?

  • Haven't thought of a birdcage yet. I don't love the netted ones but this one is really cute
