My toe is still numb!!!!

I'm kinda really freaking out now. I've worn heels tons of times and never had numbness. I ran every day last week, including the 5K, so maybe that did not help matters. 2 of my friends are telling me to calm down - one friend said this has happened to her a few times, and the feeling comes back after a few days. Another friend told me she didn't feel her toes for weeks after Vegas. Oh, and my bff told me she had frostbite this past winter, and her toe changed colors, but she was able to treat it on time.

I am in my sneakers today, and I did not work out. I am thinking of soaking my foot in Epsom salt tonight, massaging the foot and toe, and keeping it elevated. Is there anything else I should be doing? I don't know how much more time to give it before going to the doctor or podiatrist....I'm thinking that my toe should be back to normal by the wend of the week, the latest. Ugh, I'm so annoyed and kinda scared!

ETA: I woke up to the numbness yesterday after spending about 8 hours straight in heels on Saturday.

Re: My toe is still numb!!!!

  • Give it a few days of flat shoes, with good arch supports, massaging your feet is helpful and if that doesn't work it might be worthwhile checking in with a physio to release whatever nerve is caught.

Does your toe look strange? Honestly, I'd just give your feet as much of a break as possible, and if you're not feeling better by the end of the week, call a doc.

Okay, I will definitely do the massage then. Maybe I can convince FI to give me one lol. I really hope it goes away on its own!

  • @phira - my toe looks the same. Same color, and I tried to see if there was any inflammation, but I don't think there is. I think I am having trouble moving it though, although I can't really move my toes individually anyways lol. I tried spending as much time on the couch as I could yesterday, and plan on doing so today, hopefully a few days of rest is all I need.

  • It could be overuse, both from running and the heels. The whole ball of my foot was numb for the entire running leg of my triathlon last weekend (which I think actually distracted me enough from my usual "I hate running" feelings to be a benefit, ha!). Freaked me out too, but it went away eventually. Agree with PPs, give it a week and then go do the doc. (If it doesn't get worse. The nurse's daughter in me is compelled to say: if it gets worse, not better, then go to the doc right away!). Good luck.

  • Not to worry you, but it could be an indicator of larger foot problems. As I said yesterday, I have almost completely fallen arches. I second the advice for shoes with good arch support, and if this happens again, I would schedule an appointment with a foot doc and maybe see about getting orthodics. I also try and buy high quality shoes that are known for their arch support. One brand that actually has cute heels is aetrex. They are pricey, but Zulily has sales every few months. They are the most comfy heels I've ever owned.

My big toe has been numb for years.  Don't know why.  Chemo made it worse.  Now the ends of my toes are all numb.  No big deal.  I just need to be careful when I'm pushing the grocery cart so I don't stub my toe.  One of the good things about being old is that nobody cares what kind of shoes I wear.  Little old lady SAS shoes are heavenly!

  • Well, my toe feels slightly better today. I massaged it last night, and elevated it the entire night. Hopefully it continues to get better. I do think I might start developing some foot issues though, from all the running.Hopefully by the end of the week my foot is back to normal!

  • Glad it's feeling better!  This has happened to me for brief periods of time after spin class: I think it's the repetitive pedaling.  Hopefully your toe will keep improving.

Maybe THAT was why my foot was numb on my run! The bike beforehand (in partially wet socks post-swim) probably did me in.

Yikes! Yea that would probably have done it. And good for you, I could never, ever do a triathlon!
I have not done a spinning class in a few years, I just go on the spinning bike on my own for like 15 minutes after running, and maybe that also affected my poor toe. I have a wedding to go to this weekend, and I think I am going to have to find a really cute pair of flats to wear. I'm locking up my heels!

Ha, I said the same thing (about never being able to do a tri). And then my friends suckered me into doing one (a sprint). I did it, and the whole time I was overwhelmed and whining to myself in my head. Then I finished, and my IMMEDIATE thought was, "Okay, here are 10 things I can do better next time." It was insane. So I kept going, and have done that particular race 3 times. It's weird because I hate the training, and I DREAD doing them in the days leading up, but then I get there, and it's actually fun while I'm doing it, and AWESOME once I've finished and feel accomplished. I'm never going to place, let alone win anything, so the pressure is really only on myself to see if I can improve. Needless to say, it's a weird, expensive, cult-y sport at times, but I like that the sprint distance is available, because it means I can sort of dabble without committing to the sport at the expense of other things I like.

Glad the foot is feeling better! When I was having arch issues back in the day (due entirely to senior year of college hedonism-related weight gain, I think) Chaco flip-flops saved my life when I had to be on my feet. They are ugly, but might be good for hanging around the house if your arches are falling.

    Box...

I feel like that's something I would do. I can be very competitive with myself, and I always want to try something new. I felt like I did enough 5K's and went straight for a half marathon. I want to try a tough mudder or a rugged maniac next. I think I will wait a bit though, and let my foot rest a bit more before trying anything new, though!

  • I dont really have any advice, but for me it happens whenever I wear high heeled shoes for more than an hour or two. And it's only ever my left toe. The little piggy ALWAYS goes numb until I take the shoes off and let my toes be straight for a while. It's super annoying, and I always panic about it too.

Hope your toe feels better soon!
