How many appetizers?

I was just wondering how many appetizers other people are having at their weddings?

I am having a full 4 course sit down dinner, soup, salad, entrée (with a choice of 5 options), dessert, wedding cupcakes and specialty tarts from my fiancé's culture. It seems like a lot of food to me so I wasn't sure what I should be doing, I was thinking maybe 3 hot appetizers per person as well as a stationary cheese station with cheese, grapes, crackers and baguettes. Does this sound like to much, not enough or to much?

Re: How many appetizers?

  • Standard would be around 5-7 pieces per person. With apps and the cheese station you should be good.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • What kinds of hot appetizers are you thinking of? Is the plan to have these served during a cocktail hour before dinner? If so, then I think your plan is fine. Otherwise, are the appetizers like a first course at your dinner? If so, then you might want to reduce some of them, and/or maybe not have the cheese station.

I love cocktail hours.  Our venue had standard packages, and with ours we had 10 passed apps,  a carving station, a pasta station and cheese/fruits/veggies/dips.  I no way did I think it was too much with meal and desserts we served.  In fact, I've seen much more elaborate cocktail hours!   I don't think what you're serving is too much.  Do what you can afford.

ETA - I just reread  your post and Jen's......wanted to clarify to.....is this cocktail hour or plated appetizer?  If it's plated appetizer, usually each guest gets one (or a choice of one).  I wouldn't do a cheese station either then if it's part of your seated reception.

It is for cocktail hour between 6-7 and dinner being served around 7:15. I just really don't want a bunch of un eaten dinners because everyone filled up on hors dourves. The wedding itself is a Sunday evening wedding so it's not like everyone is going to be drinking and dancing all night, I think everything will be over by 11. I just know for myself I would be stuffed after eating my meal let alone the hors dourves, soup, salad, dessert, cupcakes and tarts.

Don't worry about it.  I have never left a wedding and said, "gee, that was too much food....I wish they didn't have so much".   I (and I'm sure many people) don't usually eat much at home before the wedding because I know I'll be having a lot of food later.  Cocktail hour is also my favorite part of the reception and I usually enjoy the foods there more than the entree, so regardless I'd probably be one with a half eaten entree.

If you have the room in your budget, I'd definitely do what you planned for the cocktail hour.  Heck, I'd add more options (if it fit your budget, of course!).  Good luck!
