Re: Tuesday Chatter

  • @TwoDimes

Honestly, I thought the same thing when I got the invite on FB.

However, I am excited the days are going by fast because it is my birthday on the 20th, and my BF and I are going up to his family cabin on the 23rd!
  • Happy Birthday @buddysmom80!!

All this Disney World talk is making me want to go there now! I love Disney World. Joe and I have decided that we'll go in a few years. I really want to go during the low season, so September or January ideally, but that means we have to wait until I finish coursework and am just doing my dissertation. That way, I won't have to take time off of school or try to schedule our trip during a break when it'll be packed. So, September 2017 we'll hopefully be headed to Disney World lol!

Other than that, I'm just hanging out in a hotel room since we can't get the furniture delivered to the new apartment from storage until tomorrow. Fingers crossed they can bring it to us early in the day so that I can start unpacking and decorating.

Ooooh, go to Madison this weekend! The farmers market is a must on Saturday, and there is an art fair this weekend. I got the following details from a friends:

"The 35th Annual Art Fair Off the Square is located on the 200 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd and on Olin Terrace Walkway leading up to the Monona Terrace Convention Center.

    Madison, Wisconsin

    Saturday, July 12 (9-6) and Sunday, July 13 (10-5)"

SITB: Sweet!  I used to love Farmer's Market (did my undergrad in Madison)...add an art fair and H and I are set!
  • Ladies, you are not making this wait for my Disney vacation any easier.. If anything you're making it worse knowing I will there at the same time as a few other ladies here!!

  • I MAY have looked to see if FI and I could swing a trip to Disney before the wedding. I would LOVE to and it's not THAT expensive, however, it's more than I have budgeted for a extended-weekend-getaway and this close to the wedding, I'd feel guilty spending the $$. I had it all planned out too - leave on a Wed after work; get the park hoppers; go to Animal Kingdom and Epcot one day and then the next Hollywood and Magic Kingdom. Then take a day to go see Disney's Boardwalk (where we're getting married - I've never seen it or been to the Boardwalk) and hang out at Downtown Disney. I wish I could just win the lotto already.

  • @ollie08 That's not an UO.  Even when I lived in Jersey I didn't care for Disney.  Actually, I haven't been to Disney (the parks) since ooooh like...2002.  H and I have also talked about how we're going to ensure our children don't grow up as Disney brats because I mean...we live RIGHT HERE.  And while I think a steady dose of Disney movies and musicals is fantastic, I do NOT want to be obsessing over Disney princesses for egads years of my life.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton

That being said, anyone who comes to Disney and does NOT meet me for drinks or something is in BIG trouble. I'm like right next door. No excuses :-)

    YES TO ALL OF THIS.

This is going to make me sound ungrateful, but whatever. BF's job affords us some great opportunities to go to Disney for media events. And they usually do it up big giving us a stay in one of their hotels etc. Even with nearly all expenses paid (free room, free meals, park access, fast passes etc) it's not my favorite place to go. The only way I'm going to the park is if it's free.

On the flip side, I have lots of friends who have annual passes and will go there all the time. Like before or after work, on the weekends, etc.

I get not liking Disney, most people I talk to are of the same opinion as you, including BF. He really wants to go to Universal and I want to go to Disney so we are going back. I get the side-eye from so many people for loving Disney as much as I do, but I can't help it. I just get happy feels every time I go. My whole demeanor changes and I just get happy. I don't know how to explain it, it just happens. BF wants to wait until after we have kids to go, but we are doing this trip as a compromise so he can do Universal and we can enjoy it as adults before going back with kids.

I 100% understand your love of Disney! I've never had a bad experience at Disney parks, it is seriously always a magical, happy, carefree time when I go. I can't wait to take my future kids there but I think BF and I need to make at least one more trip without kids in tow.

I've never had a bad experience at Disney.  I just never had the OMG MAGICAL PRINCESS moment.  My family always went to Universal and Seaworld because back in the day they were SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper.  Now they're still cheaper, but a bit less significantly.  I haven't been to Universal in forever and I'm very psyched to go for Halloween Horror Nights even though it's going to scare the dickens out of me.

And yea, I'm not anti-Disney either.  I just don't want my kids to think we're going to see Mickey every weekend (because we COULD, but I just don't want to.)

  • Yeah so I just spent an hour fake planning a fall trip to Disney to get an idea of how much it would actually cost. It's expensive as balls in my opinion, but as a potential honeymoon location... totally doable.

I'm a Disney princess. Always have been, always will be. I love the idea of magic and wonderment they promote. I know Disney himself was a total douche, but I'm a big fan of everything he's accomplished via his company.

It also may help that my young childhood coincided with the Disney Golden era in the 90s. I was 4 when Beauty and the Beast came out, and 5 when Lion King hit theatres. LK was my first move to see in the theatres, actually. I've loved all things Disney for as long as I can remember.

Yes! All of this! Actually, nowadays annual passes for all of the other parks are still far more affordable than Disney. True, their payment plans come out the same monthly, but Disney has blackout dates, and down payments. The other parks don't (well, not 100% on Universal because it's been a few years since I've had a pass there).

Also, we should (@Blue and @Irishdreamer) go to HHN together! That would be awesome! I've missed the past 2 years and I really want to go back.

I wish I knew what that feeling was like @caseface5, but I've never felt it. Although I do get extremely excited going to Universal and IOA still. So I guess that's the same.

@weewittlewizabeth - I was born/raised in the "Disney Golden Era" as you put it, but I still never got all "OMG DISNEY!". Then again, I never bought into the whole princess thing either.

And to all the Disney lovers out there, know this… I don't hate you. In fact I love you. You're the reason we don't pay state income tax. So come down, enjoy the parks, and spend all of your money so I don't have to!

  • My Disney love isn't really about the Princess' at all. I am a kid at heart, I love doing childish things. When I get really stressed out, I sit down and color. It relaxes me for some reason. My favorite characters are Buzz Lightyear, Simba, and Tigger. I love that in Disney I can wear my Buzz Lightyear sweatshirt and it's considered completely normal. I can goof off, laugh, and fool around. I can really be myself and I love it. It's my place to really let go and let the big kid in me out.

I get that it isn't for everyone and money is a huge reason why. I would never try to force someone to understand why I like it and I would hope no one would force me to not like it. To each his own.

  • @ollie08 We're going Nov. 1.  With the most intense HHN group ever (seriously, they've been going since like...2001 or something?)  I'm going to poop my pants.  So if you want to rescue me that would be ok too lol

  • I think the reason I'm looking forward to this trip is because Disney World was never a thing for my family. My sister and I loved the movies growing up and I will happily watch a Disney movie with my friends' kids from time to time, but Disney World wasn't out family vacation every year. My mom took my sister and I to Magic Kingdom for a day once when we were little, and then we went and stayed for a week about 6 years ago. If we had gone more, I might not be looking forward to the trip with my FILs as much!

Agreed a few years ago some of my friends wanted to do a Disney trip, and we had just done a trip two years ago.  I didn't get it,  I didn't go and went to Paris by myself instead.  Yes it was Paris trip #3 but it was actually cheaper and well it was Paris....

  • Disney is most definitely proud of their product. Their prices are CRAZY, which is why we've always talked ourselves out of a trip up until now. I'm also chomping at the bit to go to the HP theme park at Universal, and FI is a Lego lover, so we could also do a day there if we got a rental car. I dunno, I'm just a Disney lover. My mom did my nursery in Disney stuff too when I was a baby. I've been brainwashed to love it I guess.

I've only been to Disney World once when I was 14, so that could also be a bit of the appeal. A friend of mine from college moved out there and has worked at Disney World for like 7 years now. She absolutely loves it. She always posts about how fabulous her job is and how much she loves the company, which makes me want to go even more.

Also, I see a lot of people post on Reddit about the drinking challenge in Epcot. I want to partake!

I think after we go once, I'll be good for a while. I don't foresee it becoming an annual thing. Same for when we have kids... maybe once or twice, but at those rates, we'll go plop ourselves on the beach for a week instead or hop on a cruise.

Wow - Who knew Disney could be so controversial!! @weewittlewizabeth - 'Drinking Around The World' is what we have planned for the day after the wedding (FI's brother & GF are planning on doing this with us, it's how I enticed them to stay 1 day at Disney). I'm hoping with it being the Food & Wine festival that Norway will have more to drink than just beer (I'm not a beer drinker - I'm not a heavy drinker to begin with, so it'll be interesting). I would LOVE to go to the Wizarding World of HP at Universal. I just need more vacation time (as does my FI)!! The nice thing with Disney (if you stay on property), you don't need a car. I think we should look at planning a NEY meet down in FL, doesn't have to be at 'The World', could be somewhere else :o) EDIT: TK ate my paragraphs!

  • @Dignity100 Where are y'all staying at Disney? I'm leaning towards Epcot so that the nightlife is still there, but I think Downtown Disney has nightlife too? I have no idea. FI and I have been researching HM locations all night, and we're now 100% set on a Disney World and Universal Studios HM (thanks, y'all!). He's got threads open on various Disney forums looking for tips on Disneymoons, and I think we may even sign up for the Disney rewards card at some point.

  • @weewittlewizabeth - We're staying at Port Orleans Riverside.  I cannot justify one of the Deluxe resorts.  I've never stayed at a Deluxe and for the amount of time we are at our resort, it just doesn't make sense for us.  When I booked a preferred room at Port Orleans was $218 a night and a standard room at the boardwalk was over $400, I really can't afford $400 a night on a hotel/resort (I think Animal Kingdom was around $350, but it was a non-safari room).  With the buses, you can get pretty much everywhere.  I think the Boardwalk has some stuff that's open later and I know Downtown Disney has things that are open later.

I've only been to Disney twice.  The first time was with my ex and we stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter.  It was really nice there and I really liked it.  The second time I stayed at Coronado, it was nice but very very large (it was a long walk to the lobby/restaurant and also to the closest bus stop).
