Matte Satin vs Chiffon

Okay, I'm having the hardest time on deciding on dresses for my bridesmaids. I'm having a March 14th wedding, the ceremony will start around 4 or 5. My dress is ivory and the bridesmaids dress will be dahlia (a shade of purple)& floor length. Now the dilemma, is chiffon or matte satin better for a spring wedding or does it even matter? We're going for a elegant vibe for the night which is why I think the satin will fit better but I feel like chiffon will look more flattering for the ladies. I have so many pros & cons idk what to do. I would love your opinions!

Re: Matte Satin vs Chiffon

  • Where you live, is it hot in March or still snowing? If hot, I'd go with chiffon, if snowing, I think satin will look more appropriate.

If that doesn't matter to you, I would ask your BMs which they prefer. My guess is they're prefer chiffon because it's generally more flattering.

  • I live in AR so our weather is CRAZY lol so I have no idea what the weather will be. Majority of my BMs prefer chiffon but I just wanted to make sure its the right choice.
  • I like chiffon better, just because I think it's prettier, and tends to be a little more forgiving than satin.

  • Another vote here for Chiffon.  I chose chiffon for my bridesmaids.  It's more forgiving, just like QueerFemme mentioned, fairly comfy, and flows really nice.

I think chiffon would be the best choice. It seems more effortless and romantic to me. Also, it tends to be more forgiving. I'm definitely biased because I hate satin and my BMs are wearing chiffon.

ETA: I don't HAVE satin, I HATE it. It's Monday, words are hard.

  • We're also going for an elegant vibe and my ladies are wearing floor length chiffon dresses- I think it will look plenty classy and they tried on a satin gown- none of them preferred the satin to the chiffon. Have any of your bridesmaids tried the dresses on or given their opinion?
  • Yes they tried on both but at two different locations so we didn't get to see them together. They like the chiffon compared to the satin. My vision was satin but once I bought my dress my mindset changed.
  • If March in AR is anything like March in MI and there's any chance they'll have to walk through rain or snow, I'd go chiffon. It dries super quickly and won't look ripply like when satin gets wet.

  • IF they like the satin over the chiffon then I would say that should be your answer. I absolutely understand where you're coming from as I preferred the satin dress over the chiffon for the feel that we were going for but ultimately the decision was made based on their favorite, not mine. And they're all going to look amazing :)

They like the chiffon. There's your decision.
  • If they are going to have any chance of wearing the dress again, chiffon.  Full length and satin screams "bridesmaid" and "on eBay by Monday morning."  With a statement necklace and great bag, chiffon has the potential to be workable for a charity function, etc. later.
  • I'm a huge fan of satin especially if you are going for a more formal look, but I'm also a huge fan for everyone being comfortable. So if you BM would prefer chiffon & feel they would be more comfortable in chiffon, go with a chiffon full length dress. The length will help add to the formality. Have them try on both option & then make a final decision.
  • I love the look of satin but nothing else. Chiffon hides wrinkles and doesn't look as bad if the dress is too tight.
  • I'm with AtLast.  This is only an opinion of course, but any time I see satin in photos I cringe. It's rarely flattering and even matte doesn't photograph well- especially when it's rouched or laying in any way that's not completely flat.
