Re: Oh heyyyy OLW

  • We live in the New River Valley/Blue Ridge Mountains area in Virginia so yeah we are in a low cost place! That's split between V and I so we pay 240 each. I know if we live in other places we most likely will get sticker shock.

  • Holy cheap rent Batman,

What is the speak of this? Rent and cheap don't go together here. Unless you get offered a house to squat in. I'll gladly squat forever. Yeah, pretty much doing that next month.

What do you mean a parking spot costs more than rent in Virginia?

    Damn you Chicago!

Um.  You can rent a hotel room in a nice hotel in Chicago for around $480...

My rent is considered exceptionally low for my area, and I pay $1500/month.  My brother, who lives less than one mile from me, pays $2900/month + $350/month for parking.

ETA:  And we both have 1 BR 1 Bathroom apartments.

Yep. Or you can rent an apt in Chiraq for this. I prefer my apartments to come without bullet holes, though.

Ugh, all of your rents are so much cheaper...mine makes me feel sick! I pay $1580 for a fucking bachelor! Granted, I live in Toronto, and am pretty much right downtown. But this is exactly why FI wants to buy a place pronto; if I'm going to be kissing all of my monies goodbye at least we'll have something to our name at the end of it.

    Dear Toronto rent,

Fuck you. I hate you. So much.

    No love ever, lmc

@Peaseblossom55‌ Yeah. Cheapest we were quoted was $2025 and all require non-refundable application fees from $125-325. The application only gets you on a waiting list. A nanny will run us $3-4k. We're leaning towards daycare for the social aspect of it, but if we can't get in we'll probably get a nanny and try to nanny share with another local family.

Now they do offer all organic catered food, teach music, sign language, and some even offer yoga or dance class. But, holy cow, is it expensive.

I always wondered why everyone moved to the burbs. Now I get it.

  • The burbs are where it's at! My friend's Portland studio apartment is 1200/month. I have a 3BR/1BA house with a huge yard for less than 800/month, just across the river. However, I am not near anything fun. Everything fun is 20-30 minutes away or more.
  • Ha yeah I hope I can come back after grad school. I love this area, it has everything that I enjoy.

@suzie211 at least it has a lot to offer!  I haven't even looked into a nanny cost wisebut I'd much prefer that at least for the first year, but we'll see.

  • @TwoDimes is pet rent a thing in your area? Is that why the pet friendly places are so much higher?Where I live, every place has a non-refundable pet deposit (which I totally understand) and then you have to pay an additional pet rent each month. The amount varies, but I've seen it range from like $10-$50. It's one of the reasons FI and I don't have any pets yet. :-\

This is how ours is. Our rent is $25 higher each month because of the dog, but it's one of the ONLY complexes around that allows animals, so it's worth it.

  • Yep, there's pet rent in my area too. There was a nonrefundable deposit (really, the bastards said they were taking the steam clean out of that but took it out of my regular ... could have bitched, but when I got more back on my security deposit than ANY human I'd heard of with this company I didn't), and it was an additional $20/month per cat. I think per dog with my company it was $30/month and a larger nonrefundable deposit. So the figure I quoted didn't include my rent for Ellie.

@eilis, this is how it is in my area too. It's not "pet rent" per se, but they charge an additional $50 or so per animal (per month). Plus there are so few complexes that allow pets that the ones KNOW that and skyrocket the rent price in addition to charging the monthly pet fee.

Plus FI and I have an agreement that we don't want to get a dog until we have a yard for the dog to run in. We want an Australian Shepherd, which is a very active breed, so they need a lot of space to exercise. We COULD get a pet-friendly apartment for probably $1000/month or so, but we wouldn't feel right if we couldn't have a yard for the dog. So then we'd have to rent a townhome or house, and the rent would be significantly higher.
One of the main reasons why I bring up house-hunting to FI on a fairly regular basis is because of Violet. She's not a SUPER active dog (we walk her twice a day), but when we go to either of our parent's houses (both with big yards) or the dog park, or somewhere else where there's lots of room, she just LOVES it.

And I'd be lying if I didn't say that some days I REALLY wish I could just open a door and let her go out by herself instead of walking her.

Yup, best excuse for buying a house!

I used to walk my dogs 4-5 times a day, but I got really lazy after I moved... I resent taking my mom's dog for a walk, I'm like "Can't you train him to go in the yard???"

HOWEVER, you know a dog a lot better when you're closer to their elimination habits - you know quicker when they feel ill.

  • @GoldenPenguin - That is one of the reasons we are buying a home with a large yard as well. Our dog just isn't very active but LOVES to be outside...and walking him is like walking Kujo if we see another dog. Honestly though I'm worried he won't go in the backyard. He goes in my sister's backyard because she has dogs of her own and they go back there but he won't go in my mom's backyard (she has no dogs). I'm going to be pissed if he won't go in our new yard.

You're totally right - I knew Vi was getting sick over the winter because of that. For me, it's less about NEVER wanting to walk her, and more about seeing how stinkin' happy she is when she's frolicking about the yard!

  • The lack of yard is another reason we don't have a pet yet. It just feels wrong to keep an animal cooped up inside all day. I think if we were to get a dog, it would be something small like a corgi or a dachshund. We don't plan to buy a house for another 4 or 5 years, and I don't think I can wait that long for a puppy.

However, with the way rent has been skyrocketing around here lately, we may end up in a house sooner than we think. Most of our friends with homes pay roughly $1000 per month for their mortgage, and our rent is $1350. We know that the costs associated with home ownership are far more than just the mortgage, but at this rate rent will cost the same as all of the other monthly expenses for a house in the next couple of years. A lot of people have been encouraging us to buy a home recently, but we aren't in the financial position just yet, and we really don't think we need a house for just the two of us. Plus it's really handy to just call the leasing office when something goes wrong in the apartment...
