NWR- Baby shower registry

A friend of mine is having a baby shower and has registered on "myregistry.com."  Each item indicates the store/ website where it's coming from I guess.  Is it absolutely awful etiquettewise to just go to the local target and get the same/similar items as what is on the registry.  I am not a huge fan of online shopping.  I prefer to see the quality of what i'm getting, especially when it comes to baby stuff.  I don't want to buy something that is pricey only to find that it is crap quality.  I would obviously include a gift receipt in case she needs/wants to return or exchange anything.

Re: NWR- Baby shower registry

  • Do they have an option to mark the item as bought? If so, go for it. I'd probably do the same....I hate online shopping for showers.

Holy cow, do I feel dumb right now or what?  I had no idea that there was a place to mark the gift as purchased if you got it elsewhere!!!!! Thanks @JoanE2012, that is quite helpful.

Etiquette wise, there's never anything wrong with giving a gift of your choosing.  That's totally up to you, I would just try to mark the gift as bought is at all possible (so others don't get repeats).  Also, although of you course you are free to choose whatever it is you want to give, I'd personally avoid giving "similar" items as some "similar" items just aren't the same.  So if you want to get a registry item, I'd personally get the same things requested.  Although things like clothes are always up for personal opinion ; )

I agree, don't get similar items. For example you may not like the bottles she registered for but the reason she registered for them is because they are the ones compatible with the breast pump her insurance is paying for.  Or maybe you were thinking about getting her the carseat and she picked the one she registered for because it will fit in her car (they aren't a standard size).  She may have registered for a specific brand of baby wash because she or the father has a skin allergy and she's concerned the baby may have it too.

When I said similar I was reffering more to getting one bottle of the babywash she wanted instead of the three pack that is pricier, or maybe different sized onesies, etc.
