Mother of Groom color?

October 2014 wedding. The bridal party is wearing plum, the groomsmen medium/darkish gray. MOB wearing floor length dress of undecided color. As a 64 y.o. white-haired MOG, would a navy gown be appropriate? I know MOB should get hers first, but I have found one I like and know she won't be wearing navy. Is navy in the color family without standing out too much? I look washed out in pale colors. Help!?

As a MOG you should wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in.  There is no rule stating that the MOB should buy her dress first.  If you have found something that you think you look great in then buy it.  And the color of your dress does not have to coordinate with the wedding party.  Buy a dress you love because that is the only thing you should worry about.

Yeah, I think she should wear whatever she likes. For the record, navy sounds really nice.

My FI's stepmother adorably asked him what I wanted her to wear. I was like, are you kidding? Wear whatever you like! She always looks perfectly lovely anyway, but even if she didn't, who cares? The mere idea of being asked to extend my "vision" to the parents' apparel is panic-inducing.

Navy sounds fine. But honestly, she should be wearing whatever color she wants. Please don't dictate attire to the MOG.

MOG's have zero requirements about what they wear or who gets their dress first. Both MOB and MOG have children getting married; the idea that one mother is more important or has higher priority is just silly. Find a dress that suits the formality of the wedding and makes you feel beautiful.

As the MOG, you should wear whatever you want. Navy is classic and a great pick! 

It's pretty old fashioned to wait until MOB selects her dress. I would seriously side-eye an MOB and/or bride who were pissy over an MOG getting her dress first. 

If you're worried about MOB or bride throwing a fit, I would buy it but not say anything until MOB has purchased. No one has to know you already have a dress.

I was MOB four years ago.  We didn't c0-0rdinate colors or length, and the pictures look beautiful!  Wear what ever you want.  Navy sounds lovely!

Navy sounds just fine to me. 

FWIW, my wedding was in May. Colors were ivory, champagne, gold, and wine. MOG is in her mid 60's and has gray hair. She wore a bright blue suit dress with neon green trim. She looked lovely!
