Tell me about alterations :)

Here's my situation...
I got a dress of preownedweddingdresses.com after trying it on in a dress shop, loved it, the dress I ended up buying is perfect, immaculate, etc etc.. but I guess wires got crossed somewhere because when I got the dress, it was a size smaller than I expected, SOOO I've been hitting the workouts (but not trying to super stress about it) since about April.  It's gone from not even being close to fitting to being about an inch away from fully zipping.  The dress is Casablanca 1992 for those who are curious, it has a zip-up back that is beautiful that I would really love to keep versus switching to a corset back (also helps budget-wise).

My question is, I was told the general timeline for beginning dress fittings is about three months out, and our wedding is November 14.  I'm wondering how the appointments go.. like is there still some wiggle room to lose the remaining weight I want to lose?  Maybe at appt #1, we can talk about this stuff, discuss length since it is long on me, and then maybe at a later appointment we can figure out how the top is fitting me?

I'm clueless... I had a bridesmaid dress altered once and prom dresses altered for length, but that's it.  I am not familiar with this process at all.  Thanks!!

Re: Tell me about alterations :)

  • Has your dress been previously altered? You should talk to a seamstress first. I panicked when my dress was too tight, but she said there was enough extra fabric in the seams to let the hips out a full size.

  • I'm starting my fittings 1 month out, so you can put it off a little bit more than going 3 months out.  Do you know who will be doing your alterations - if so call them and ask them when the latest is you can start (in order to give you wiggle room to lose more weight).  After you start your fittings, they don't like you to lose weight.

    Anniversary
  • I started my alterations about 5 weeks before the wedding. Call the seamstress you plan on using and check their timing.
  • i started middle of april and was done by end of may wedding was end of june

i  had to have the length hemed  then hemmed again because i was changing into flip flop wedges.
one point bustle which ended up breaking on me the day of the at the reception but my maids did a quick fix and tied my bustle to the end of my corset laces and tucked inside my dress. my top had to be taken in the sides 3 times beacuse it was way to big
  • I had mine altered about 6-8 weeks out if I remember correctly, and that was during prom season.  I had 3 fittings total.  First they took out about 1/2 inch in my hip area, second they did the hem, and third they did the bustle

  • Ah okay thanks!!! The dress hasn't been altered before. The bust is where I need the space, so hopefully that's something she can work with. I think I will call the seamstress I want to use and have a chat about when to come in.
  • I did my first fitting about 3 months out but they did the bustle and hem first. Then a month out they took in my sides and top. You should have some wiggle room
