Help with heel height vs hem!

For my first fitting, I hadn't found my shoes just yet, so brought a pair I already owned thinking I would have no problem finding a heel with the same height! The shoe I wore to my first fitting had a 3 3/4" heel, and this pair I've found online has a 4" heel. It doesn't seem like a huge difference, but I wanted to make sure it wouldnt affect where she has my hem pinned before making the purchase. The platform on both shoes are the same and its just the 1/4" heel height thats different. Can anyone advise?? Thank you!

  • Can you tell the seamstress to hold off on hemming the dress until you can come back with shoes that have a 4 inch heel.  I've tried explaining to seamstresses in the past that I would be wearing an item with slightly higher shoes, and it didn't work.  Logically, you think they'd be able to just let 1/4 inch out of the hem, but better safe than sorry!

Hopefully some other posters have had some better experiences and can give advice that doesn't necessitate an additional trip to the seamstress.

  • Yeah, don't get it hemmed until you can go in with the right shoes. I forgot my shoes for my first fitting so I borrowed a pair that were a higher heel. The woman who did the fitting told me to go home, measure the heel, call her and she would adjust the measurement appropriately. When I went to pick up my dress and do the final fitting I had the right shoes with me. The dress was too long. The literally fixed it with me standing there in dress while they worked.

  • I don't think she has yet, so I'll give her a call.. Thanks guys!
  • It's easy to take up a hem a little more if you need to. Not as easy to let the hem back down, especially if the seamstress trims the excess fabric. If the shoe is taller, you should re-do the fitting. Normally I'd say who cares about 1/4 of an inch, but this is your wedding dress! :)

  • Yeah tell her to hold off hemming your dress.  It may not seem like a huge difference in heel height but remember that when she pinned the hem for your dress in your shorter shoes she pinned it slightly higher then floor length so if she hemmed it at that height the length would be quiet short with your higher shoes.
