The Great Veil Debate- Are You Having One? Why/Not

Re: The Great Veil Debate- Are You Having One? Why/Not

  • I'm wearing one, since the only other time I wore a veil was at my first communion. It's very simple- 1 tier, waist length, angel cut with a pencil edge. I plan on wearing it for the ceremony (in a church) and then taking it off for the reception. I also have a sparkly headband I will be wearing the whole time.
  • I already posted this photo in the ivory vs. white thread, but it also shows my veil.  I could have gone either way between a veil and a headpiece...this one is my mom's.  I never thought I liked it and tried it on as a joke, and I fell in love with it.  It also means a lot to her :)  She wore it on top of her head, but I plan to have it set back more like in the picture.  We'll also be fixing up the flowers and ribbon...it's hard to see, but there are thin ribbons with flowers every few inches that fall from the crown over the veil.  I'll only where it for photos and the ceremony and probably do a headband or comb for the reception.

  • FI doesn't give a flying fruitcake what I wear to the wedding. I asked him about what kind of dress he'd like to see me in and he said he just wants me to love it and doesn't have a preference.

At first I was in the birdcage veil camp, but then those got popular and I got over it pretty fast. After I found my dress, I fell in love with the idea of a longer veil, so I scoured used veils for sale (I couldn't bring myself to spend full price on something I'll wear for an hour) knowing I wanted fingertip length or longer.

I mean, how many times does a girl get to wear a veil?

  • I'm wearing my mother's veil. It's fingertip length and has a blusher, but I'm just going to wear it back so it looks like a double tiered veil. My problem is that it is attached to a juliet cap which simply does not fit my head (it covers my ears!) So I have to figure out how to attach the material to a new clip/comb/something.

I actually have two veils and not by design. I knew I wanted to wear one, since I am wearing a gown. At the beginning of the process, I was thinking of a long dress and a veil would have looked silly, unless the dress lent itself to one. So I got a final sale, simple chapel length veil with small rhinestone detail along the blusher edge. I was very happy with it. Then I went shopping with the Girls and we came across this little boutique with gorgeous bridal accessories and they insisted on buying me this crazy extravagant one (pictured, not in any gown). It's gorgeous and different and well, I love it too. I've figured out a way to wear both, so I guess you could say the veils are all over me!
I love that veil! And that's totally a cute photo :P

  • @Novella1186 Thank you! I did feel kinda regal strutting around the shop in it. It's supposed to arrive next week and I honestly cannot wait. It was so gorgeous and different. A true one of a kind thing. I will keep it for anyone who wants to wear it for their wedding (maybe my future SD; she got engaged last week).

  • I didn't wear a veil. I have never wanted to and could never really see myself in one so I got a hairpiece with a tiny bit of netting instead. We got married outside in a backyard evening ceremony so for me a veil would have looked a little too formal, I think.

I don't think veils are old fashioned (I've seen lots of brides wear them well and look fabulous) and my husband didn't care one way or another, as long as I was happy and felt comfortable.
