I think I got someone's credit card canceled.

Backstory:  We just moved a couple of weeks ago.  We have a house phone since it was part of the internet/cable deal.  I don't know the phone number because I use my cell for anything.

A few minutes ago the house phone rang and it was an automated message telling me to press one for information about my credit card.  Now I know it wasn't my credit card because I haven't given this number to anyone and I know DH didn't give it to his credit cards either.  It gives me the option to press 1 and I do to find out who is calling and let them know they have the wrong people.  W ell, the woman wouldn't tell me who she was calling from, who she was trying to reach, asked if I denied having a credit card, asked if I denied a certain amount of debt, found it suspicious that I didn't know the phone number (I had explained we had just moved and I didn't have it memorized), stated she was turning me into their fraud department and would have all of my accounts closed.  I told her it would be someone's accounts but not mine.  She again expressed belief that I was lying and told me I would be receiving a letter notifying me the accounts were closed.

  • I guess they will find out soon enough.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Sounds all like a load of bull to me. My guess is that they were in sales- trying to convince someone that they needed some sort of protection plan or credit check or something by scaring them into thinking something happened. When you didn't go along with the script, she changed tactics to try and get you to fess us to being the person she was trying to call.

I don't know this to be fact- but I do know that I have never, ever had a credit card company call me with a prompt about getting information on my account. That just sounds not legit at all. I'm also pretty sure that fraud complaints don't work like that. My husband used to work in But I do know that this isn't really how fraud complaints work. Fraud is typically charges to an account that aren't supposed to be there. He'd get people calling in from time to time trying to get into accounts that weren't theirs, and once they didn't get in- they'd hang up. And he'd note it on the account's record. But saying you don't own an account that you don't own isn't fraud.

  • Well... that's awkward.. Guess they will know when they get the letter...

  • We've gotten another weird call like that too.  A few days ago someone called claiming to be from our internet provider saying we had been hacked and illegal activity was stemming from our account and they had been trying to get a hold of us for weeks and they were about to shut down our service.   Only we hadn't had the service for weeks, there had been no other calls from them, and DH didn't have any official e-mails from them.

I'd seriously just unplug the house phone but DH gave the number to his mother.

  • CitiBank would call me and prompt me to verify recent credit card charges.  It was all automatic like "do you verify charge in the amount of $12.45".    I would push 1 for "yes" or 2 for "no".   So I do not think it's odd a company would call  if it was for fraud.

I do find it odd they would not say where they are calling from and didn't  ask to speak to [insert card holders name].    I don't think it's reveling too much to say "This is CitiBank, am I speaking to  Jane Smith".   " Yes", okay start verifying information.     "no".  Then they can note their records they have a wrong number.

  • Nope, sounds like someone trying and failing to steal someone's credit card information. Real CC companies will always disclose who they are.

When I asked were she was calling from she said something like member services and when I asked for who she said a credit card, when I asked for which one she listed all of them.  Almost makes me wonder if she is from a collection agency.  I had to deal with them once when I answered a call met for my roommate.  They wouldn't say who they were calling from and decided I must really be her and started yelling at me to pay my bill.

  • Or a bill collector. They expect to be lied to.

  • Yup, sounds like a phishing scam.

that is my guess.   They expect it because they are.  But it's still odd they didn't ask to speak to the card holders name.

This is what makes me think scam and not bill collector.

Put your number on the do not call list. We didn't answer the phone for like a month when we got our phone because they were all solicitations. We both use our cell phones too, and just got a house phone because it was included.

I forgot about the do not call list.  It has been a while since I had a house phone and I registered my cell phone forever ago.

The phone number we have was a business phone ten years ago.  They left town owing money, so we used to get a lot of genuine collection calls for them.
A real collection agency would not speak to you like this without verifying your identity.  This was a scam.
We still get robo-calls for the old business.  They never stop.  They want to sell us more credit.  I do not speak like a lady when they bother me, even though I am on the Federal Do Not Call list.
