Backstory: We just moved a couple of weeks ago. We have a house phone since it was part of the internet/cable deal. I don't know the phone number because I use my cell for anything.
A few minutes ago the house phone rang and it was an automated message telling me to press one for information about my credit card. Now I know it wasn't my credit card because I haven't given this number to anyone and I know DH didn't give it to his credit cards either. It gives me the option to press 1 and I do to find out who is calling and let them know they have the wrong people. W ell, the woman wouldn't tell me who she was calling from, who she was trying to reach, asked if I denied having a credit card, asked if I denied a certain amount of debt, found it suspicious that I didn't know the phone number (I had explained we had just moved and I didn't have it memorized), stated she was turning me into their fraud department and would have all of my accounts closed. I told her it would be someone's accounts but not mine. She again expressed belief that I was lying and told me I would be receiving a letter notifying me the accounts were closed.
Re: I think I got someone's credit card canceled.
"Hello, is Ted Nugent there? This is Steve McQueen from Bank of America calling about his credit card ending in 4544. We're a little concerned about some possible fraudulent activity on his account...... No? I have the wrong number?..... My apologies, have a nice day."
I get calls like this all day at work from telemarketers. They all ask for the owner of the company (who lives and works in a different country) and then act really upset when I won't transfer them. They all swear up and down they just talked to him the other day, and that they've been exchanging emails. All lies. If they actually did talk to him they would already know he isn't in the country and they would have his cell and email. They also make it seem like it's the end of the world if they can't get a hold of him.
A real collection agency would not speak to you like this without verifying your identity. This was a scam.
We still get robo-calls for the old business. They never stop. They want to sell us more credit. I do not speak like a lady when they bother me, even though I am on the Federal Do Not Call list.
