Hey everyone! I’m new here and just wanted to introduce myself

My name is Sarah, I’m from the central coast California, I’m 26, and my bf of almost 4 years recently asked me to marry him on our trip to the Bahamas last month

Needless to say I’m thrilled, but anxious and overwhelmed at the idea of planning a wedding! Luckily though we aren’t planning the big day until late summer 2016, so we have at least 2 years to plan this thing

Anyway I just wanted to say hi, looking forward to chatting with you girls & getting to know some of you!

Thanks everyone! So just kind of some random questions off the top of my head are: What does everyone's budget look like? We want a 200 person wedding and are looking (casually) into venues right now and everything just seems so damn expensive! What would you find is "average" cost for a venue? And also what's the deal with picking your wedding colors lol. I seriously had no idea you had to do this until now LOL. Is it just for your bridesmaids dresses, or "what else" goes with the colors you pick, in particular? Thanks ladies!

Venue cost totally depends on where you live. This board is international, so you might have better luck asking around on your local board.

As far as colors... I guess it's the easiest way to do a theme. It would probably look pretty uncoordinated if all your linens were green, your bridesmaids were in orange, the groomsmen had grey suits with blue ties, and the flowers were all pink. So colors are just an easy way to make sure everything looks classy. But that can definitely wait!

I know budgets differ a lot on here. My mother paid for our whole reception, so the whole wedding cost 37k. We had 125 people in Dallas. Our venue was on the higher end, 9k for ceremony and reception reservation for the late Saturday evening spot. Colors? Whatever fits your mood, your venue (beach or field or ballroom) and time of year.

To the bolded - it's all over the map. Around here we have everyone from budget queens to luxury brides, and every wedding is lovely in its own way. It's totally normal to balk at the cost of everything when you first start, but there are ways to cut back the costs and still host your guests well. Your local board can help you find out more about venue costs in your area, and the ladies on the Budget Weddings board have great ideas on how to save money.

ETA: I'm currently stressing out about colors.

Hi there and congrats! We had a dinne ron the beach just like that in Cancun.

Budgets really are all over the place, some high, some low, some NYC, some Kansas City. It's nice to get ideas from everyone else. Like a ton of people have said "I was totally going to do bathroom baskets, then I said fuck it" and ten other people say "good, I'm not the only one". Hahaha

Colors don't need to be chosen now. Honestly when we went shopping for bridesmaid dresses I still hadn't chosen a color. I said I was just going to pick whatever struck my fancy. And that ended up being a Navy dress with white polka dots from the mall! So then I sort of worked my colors around that- Navy, Green, White. You don't have to know from day one that you want blush pink or whatever.
