Re: No alcohol at the reception - HELP!!!

  • She may also be referring to nondenominational Christian churches.  We have a few of those here and they just call themselves Blahblah Christian Church.  That's what her description sounds like to me.  They are much more relaxed than a lot of other Christian churches.  But, as someone who grew up Catholic, Catholics are definitely Christian!
  • I love this place.
  • Zitiqueen maybe your new. My tablet at home does that for some unkown reason. I have tried to insuccessfully change it. It is hard to type on the little bitty keyboard on my phone. (Fat fingers) And christian churches are real. I, as stated before, have been to a catholic church my entire life. A few weeks ago I came to the christian church affiliated with my daughters daycare. Way different! Pretty much the same beliefs and stuff but the church is different, as I stated before. I NEVER said catholics werent christians. I also didnt make the comment about christians not all being catholic. However, some of the people who come to this church are not catholic. Some used to be catholic. All I ever said was the church was different!

OMG!  Like others stated Catholic Church IS a Christian Church. Saying Catholic vs. Christian basically states that "Catholic" is not included in "Christian", when it is. Using a PP's analogy, it's like saying Apples vs. Fruit, which doesn't work.  Please, please, PLEASE stop referring to non-Catholic churches as "Christian Churches", unless you are referring to all of Christianity in general terms.  "Christian" Churches encompass a very large group with various beliefs and practices.  "Christian" churches include, Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Nazarene, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Mormon, Jehovah's Witness, etc. There are also Non-Denominational Christian churches. Any denomination that believes in Christ as a Son of God, is "Christian".  Therefore, saying "Christian Church" would include all churches within those denominations. And included in those are groups that have very different ideas on the proper way to demonstrate their faith. Those ideas even change amongst the same denomination. I grew up in a mix of Nazarene, Baptist, Methodist, and Non-denomination churches. Even going from one church to the next, within the same denomination (Nazarene to Nazarene, or Baptist to Baptist), introduced me to varying ideas of what was acceptable.  I had some Baptist churches that were more strict and didn't approve of drinking, gambling, dancing, even going to R-rated movies. Others were much less strict and had very little "rules".  And, from my experience, most non-denominational churches do tend to be less strict.

So, yes there may be churches that allow drinking and some that don't. I've been to churches that forbid drinking, even outside of the church.  I've been to churches that may not forbid drinking at home, but certainly wouldn't allow it inside the church. And I've been to churches that actually have their own liquor licenses so they can fully stock the bar at events. And these are all at "Christian" churches.  But, you can't make generalized statements that all Christian churches are the same, because they vary widely in their ideals, practices, and traditions. If you wanted to get more specific and compare certain denominations, like Catholic vs. Baptist, that would be more appropriate, but like I stated, even then practices can vary widely even from church to church within one denomination, so it's still hard to make generalizations about a particular group.

Yes, I mentioned nondenominational churches.  They also fall under the heading of Protestant churches.  My sister belongs to a nondenominational church.  They're not all more relaxed than other Christian churches, however.

Apologies.  I was just trying to gather some semblance of understanding from what she was saying and was thinking maybe the church that she went to did not specify a denomination and that was why she kept saying it was just a "Christian" church rather than a Protestant church.  I was just going off of personal experience when I said that they were more relaxed.  I guess it was a poor generalization made from the few that I have attended.

I think saying that they are often more relaxed than other Christian churches would probably be a fair statement.  I just wanted to clarify that that's not true of all nondenominational churches (side effect of being a scholar of religion).

  • Think of it this way: men and women are both humans, but they are quite different in some ways, and quite similar in others. To discuss those differences, you would not talk about men vs humans, right? You'd talk about men vs women.

To the OP, as long as you had a variety of soda and water to drink, and definitely coffee after supper, I'd be a happy human.
