Wedding dress bustle for Casablanca 1892 wedding dress??

Hi everyone,

My wedding is less than a month away and I still need to install a bustle.. not sure how to do that yet. I am trying to keep costs low so I was thinking of trying to do it myself.

If you google images of my wedding dress, you will see that the train is very long (and in my opinion, it feels a little heavy), what kind of bustle would you brides suggest??

I looked at pictures of different kinds of bustles (American bustle, French bustle, Austrian bustle, etc...) but I am not sure what kind of bustle would be appropriate for my dress.

In my opinion, I think I like the look of the Austrian bustle but I don't know where to begin on how to do it? Does anyone know how or can direct me to a link or video that shows how to do it?

Or if anyone has any ideas or opinions on what kind of bustle would look nice on my dress, please reply! Thanks in advance :)

  • Unless you're an experienced seamstress, I don't recommend doing the bustle yourself.  If the train is long and heavy, you want to make sure it's done right and holds up.   You don't want it coming apart and having to carry your train all night!

I recommend going to see a seamstress with your dress.  She will be able to guide you to the types of bustles you could do with your dress.  (I had my heart set on one type of bustle, but when I met the seamstress, she told me my dress would only really work with another type).  She should also be able to pin up the different types so you can see them before you commit to it.  Good luck!
  • I looked at my seamstress's website for a bustle her normal charges are $50-85.  The seamstress will be able to make recommendations based on the materials and style of the dress.  You can probably price out several different alterations places before making a final decision (dress shops tend to cost more than individual shops).

  • I understand you are trying to keep costs low but you should pay a professional to put in a bustle for you.  Bustles can be complicated and you want to make sure that sucker holds all night.

As for what type of bustle would like good with your dress, again this is where a professional should come into play.  They could tell you which bustles would work with your style dress and they would be able to pin certain styles in place to show you what they would look like.

So please, go to a professional.  It really is money well spent.

  • I just wanted to echo PP's that a professional seamstress really doesn't charge a whole lot to do a bustle.  You should really go to one and get her recommendations. My seamstress did my bustle for less than $50!  My dress needed an underbustle and she installed numbered "ribbons and rings" to tie together.  It was so easy that anyone could bustle it, and the dress looked amazing that way!
