What Colour of Suits?

I'm trying to decide what colour suits to put the GMs and my fiance in. The wedding is in December and colours are gold, ivory, and maybe a couple touches of dark red in my centerpieces. The church will be decked out for Christmas with lots of red and a giant tree. I'm going for a formal but laid back bridal party look - 3 BM's all wearing completely different dresses (gold, sparkly, bronzey) and I'd like the guys to have the same vibe = not matching, but not clashing.

I was just told in another thread that brown suits are completely out of style  - however, I love this: http://www.stylemepretty.com/gallery/picture/526611/   So I guess that leaves black, grey and navy...which I'm not too excited about. Navy just seems to add another colour element in that I don't want and grey doesn't seem to go so well with the gold and bronze of the BM's. I also don't want them all in the exact same suit.

Thoughts????

Re: What Colour of Suits?

  • Charcoal or black suits?
  • Why not black?  I think a nice black suit (not tux if you're wanting it to be more laid back) would look perfect with those colors.  I don't think Navy would really go.  Charcoal would be okay, but really I think black would look awesome with gold, ivory, and red.

  • Charcoal. Black is too funereal.
  • I think charcoal, grey, or black would be your best options.  Particularly if the GM are buying their suits, you really want something that they're going to wear again.  Rather than having different suits, I'd suggest a different waistcoat and tie for each man.  I know you're in to the three piece suits, so this would be a nice way of making them less matchy-matchy.  Or you could go with the same suit in different shades of grey.  And yes, unfortunately you're going to have real problems with the brown suits.  I did think the picture you attached looked great, but I think the comments in the other thread are right.  How will you source brown suits?  If they had to be purchased, would any of your GM wear them again?  And how will you feel about them in 20 years?  I think the powder blue tux with the ruffles comparison is a little off.  Those things were popular back in the 70s.  You're going for a look that's not super fashionable now, so you hopefully wouldn't have those sorts of feelings.  That said, for the most part I find brown suits, or overly brown outfits on women, for that matter, to be sort of costume-y seventies stuff.  Sorry, but I think your GM will thank you for not making them wear brown.
