NWR: Is this ironic?

White Couple Sues Sperm Bank After They Were Given Sample From Black DonorA white lesbian couple in Ohio is suing their sperm bank after they were mistakenly given, and became pregnant with, African American sperm. The couple claim they will struggle to bring up a multiracial daughter in their predominantly white community. Cramblett and her partner, Amanda Zinkon, are seeking $50,000 (£30,000) in damages after Midwest Sperm Bank, in Downers Grove, Illinois, sent them sperm from a black man rather than the white donor they had originally chosen.Cramblett and Zinkon claim that while they love their daughter, Payton, who is now 2 years old, they worry they’ll struggle to bring her up in their predominantly white community.According to the Chicago Tribune, the lawsuit states: “Jennifer lives each day with fears, anxieties and uncertainty about her future and Payton’s future.”The suit claims Cramblett grew up surrounded by people “with stereotypical attitudes about non-whites”, and that the 36-year-old “did not know African-Americans until she attended college at the University of Akron”.
Due to this, it is alleged she faced a steep learning curve that included taking Payton to get her hair cut in a black neighbourhood where Cramblett was “obviously different in appearance, and not overtly welcome”.Cramblett and Zinkon allegedly learned of the mix-up just months after marrying in early 2012, when they rang Midwest Sperm Bank to reserve more sperm in the hope Zinkon could also become pregnant.Quoting the lawsuit filed on Monday, the Associated Press reported that Cramblett discovered in a phone call to the clinic that she had become pregnant with sperm from donor No. 330, a black man, instead of No. 380, the white donor chosen by the couple. She told AP: “They took a personal choice, a personal decision, and took it on themselves to make that choice for us out of pure negligence.”The couple said they brought the lawsuit against the sperm bank to prevent it making the same mistake again.
Cramblett (pictured with her attorney, Tim Misny), said she worries Payton could be stigmatised by her own family and schoolfriends, and that therapists have advised her to move to a more racially diverse area.

According to the Chicago Tribune, an attorney for the sperm bank said it would not comment on active legal proceedings.

I guess I can see their point, but it's like you are already going to face so many problems being gay parents that wtf does it even matter if you tack on a minority?

So the people in the area think gay is okay but don't like black people? The fuck

  • I live about 15 minutes away from this area, and I side-eyed the fuck out of this article when it came up on Flipboard today.

Akron is a very, very diverse area and there are definitely good schools there that they could raise their children in that wouldn't require moving to Uniontown, which is diverse in absolutely zero aspects, but DOES have great schools. Your questioning of why they wouldn't accept a biracial child but would apparently accept a lesbian couple is spot-on -- many people there wouldn't accept either. I called bullshit on this entire fucking article after about 20 seconds.

I was hoping someone on The Knot would know/live in that area. That poor wee child did nothing wrong too. What is she gonna do when she finds that article later on? Must be the damage money. But poor kid.

  • And to think....my mom had to deal with people asking who the mother of her child was (because I look like my dad spat me out. Its unreal) even when I was an infant....

Then again, mom also had to deal with the nursing staff mixing up babies...I kid you not, november 1986 in miami shores fl, they mixed me up with other kids. twice.

Punchline to baby mixup- 15 newborns in the ward, 1 obviously white infant (me) and 14 obvious minorities (I think my folks said there were 11 african american babies and 3 hispanic/latino newborns). Nope, not making it up.

These parents need to have their heads examined
  • I just read this on CNN a little while ago and found it pretty vile. I was the only Jew in a graduating class of 600 people. Did that damage me? No. We didn't "relocate" to be around people "more like me." Ugh. I couldn't even believe they wrote the article to begin with. It's drenched in hypocrisy and bigotry. To say she won't be accepted because no other kids "look like" her, and there are no "biracial couples" around is insinuating that she can't be accepted as an individual, based on her own merits, regardless of skin color or "race," and that she must belong to a group. Puke.

  • This is crazy. But if it was that big a deal to them, why didn't they specify that when receiving the sperm.
  • This is crazy. But if it was that big a deal to them, why didn't they specify that when receiving the sperm.
They did, and that's the basis of the lawsuit. They should've received sperm from a white donor, but the agency that sent the sperm sample in mixed them up, apparently.

They did - they'd picked a specific white dude but the sperm bank/doctor/whatever mixed it up.

  • Yup. It's not like ordering a barbie online. "We ordered a white barbie but you accidentally sent us a black one. Now we're pissed. It's not going to fit in with all our other white barbies."

This is a human life. Fuck heads.

  • I'm in "fix it" mode. Have the child, and arrange for adoption. Sperm bank then provides the correct sperm at no charge and pays medical bills.

On a consumer level I can see why they are upset.  They purchased "x" and got "y".   But this is a child not that you thought you were buying an iphone and got a samsung instead.  Now matter how you slice it you are saying you wish you ended up with what you bought.

      It's seriously fucked up.
This. I can see how they might want to inform or somehow get the sperm bank to monitor their packages more closely. Because when you go through all the work to pick a specific donor you want to get who you chose.

BUT you don't go talking about your poor kid like they're a hardship or make a big deal about "not fitting in". That poor kid is going to feel very unwanted. Especially if the "correct" baby comes along after.

  • Anyone else see the donor IDs? 330 and 380. I'm willing to bet the IDs were handwritten (by the parents?) and not very clearly. I can see making an issue of it to protect future patients, but the lawsuit is going to do more to mess up their daughter's sense of worth than being the biracial daughter of a white lesbian couple.

They picked out a white, blonde haired, blue eyed donor so it would (might)  have similar features to the one not getting pregnant.  It was donor 380.    They got donor 330 which was a black donor.

I might have gotten the number switched, but the staff member missed the 8 or a 3 or vice-versa.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • The whole thing is just absurd in the first place. I mean, FFS, Uniontown is sandwiched between Akron and Canton, both very diverse areas. Lake Local Schools don't exist in a vacuum in which there will only be white people forever. BE THE FUCKING CHANGE, PEOPLE.
  • Fucking ridiculous.

  • I understand being pissed that you didn't get what you paid for, so to speak. Just like any other transaction/purchase, this is not acceptable. But, regarding the "it's too hard to raise a biracial child in a white community": Oh, fuck you, asshole. This is going to be so damaging to that little girl when she grows up and find out about what her moms did. And she will find out.

That's the shitty thing about the Internet, she will find out. Sadly unlike me being 16 when I first thought to google my name she will be 6 and find out her mommys were pissed she was biracial and unwanted.

I don't get the big deal on their end. I live in an ass backward redneck mountain town that is rumored to have a chapter of the KKK. I still happily watch my "niece" who happens to be black and go out with her. Even here where I have yet to see a single minority I get compliments on my adorable daughter.

This. Everything is out already and in a few years she'll be able to read and surf the net like no other. Those parents are morons.

  • @IrishPirate60 @larrygaga The kid's already like 2 years old, I think.
  • The girl is already 2 years old.. This is just horrifying. I understand the wrongness from consumerism point of view, and that needs to get fixed. But moms need to do it without implying that they are disappointed in their daughter. Poor girl is going to find out about how she was "supposed to be white". And what is she going to think about races?

And they cannot give her up now at 2 years without the daughter realizing "my mommies didn't want me".

So terrible, working so hard for a child and doing sperm donation, and then giving your child away because the final product wasn't what you expected?
