Not preventing getting sick...

But if I think I am, any suggestions??  I've got a sore throat now, and I'm debating not going to tumbling class tonight.  It's killing me to not go cos I had such a good week last week, and want to work more, but I'm thinking staying home will be better for me.  I usually gargle with warm/hot salty water morning and night.  I might be getting a headache, but an advil will take care of that.  And my back is killing me, but that could be from cheer practice.  I've got a heat pad on it.  Any other suggestions for getting better??

  • Seriously, I swear by echinacea. Take 2 pills two or three times a day for two or three days. It's an immune system booster. Works wonders for me. Just don't take it all the time or you'll develop resistance to it.

  • I swear by the Zicam zinc tablets - you let one dissolve in your mouth every 3 hours from the very minute you feel sick. It might be a placebo, but I honestly feel like that plus rest and fluids keeps my cold at a low level. I am the kind of person who will be knocked out, barely functioning with a bad cold so I try to avoid that when possible.
  • DH just came home.  I might send him out again.  :(  Or send him to see if there's any Cold FX in the cupboard.

  • Most big pharmacies like Rite Aid and CVS carry both things above. Have him get you some chocolate too. :)

  • No CVS or Rite Aid, but there is a Shoppers Drug Mart close.  And silly Lolo, I always have chocolate in the house.  It's in the fridge at the moment, hidden behind the eggs, since DH doesn't eat those and I don't like to share all the time.

  • If you're into hippie-type remedies, you could swallow a spoonful of honey for the sore throat. I'm sure it won't prevent you from getting sick if that's what's happening, but it should at least ease the pain.
  • esstee, I'm into anything that will make this go away.

  • Cool. Do all the things you're already doing, and swallow some honey, and then go to bed and get some rest!
  • The honey idea is a good one. Honey is loaded with vitamin C.

  • A home remedy is chewing a whole clove of garlic, but you are supposed to do it right away (at the first throat tickle).

It is really, really, really awful-tasting. And I am not certain that it worked for me the last time I tried it but I think I was too far "gone" already.

I also like hot, hot, hot tea. (Actually it doesn't even have to have tea in it. I'll make myself scalding water with lemon and honey). It halts sore throats in their tracks.

Personally, I like hot toddys. Whisky + boiling water + honey + orange slice + clove. Zaps sore throats like nothing else.

OH GIRL, ME TOO. There's a bar near my place that has a $3 hot toddy happy hour. I'll go there regardless of whether I'm sick or healthy!
