the fifth level of hell...

Re: the fifth level of hell...

  • When I went to the SS office to change my name I sat there for about 40 minutes before I realized I forgot my marriage license.  So I had to leave, grab my license and come back and wait another 40 minutes.  Crappiest morning of my life.

They won't let you drink your coffee in the waiting room?  Really?  I would be all "If have to stand in line for god knows how long and listen to your crappy muzak then I get to drink my coffee inside, so deal."

  • Oddly, the SS office took me about 20 minutes. It was the DMV that was hellish.

  • I'm sorry for your pain...I was incredibly stressed out when I arrived at our SS office to change my name the line was out the door and pooling with a very large number of young ladies.  It was also obvious that many of them did not speak English as their first language.  Based on what I was able to gather - they were all au pairs/nannies entering the states for the first time looking for work permits/SSN numbers so they got shuttled to the back office for individual interviews and my wait only ended up being 15 minutes or so.  They also didn't say anything about my large DD iced tea - so the office workers were lucky too.

  • Ah yes, my SS office had the same 'no food and drink' rule as well as the worlds most uncomfortable chairs. But it only took me about 45 minutes which was a cakewalk compared to the 3 hours I spent at the DMV.

     Hopefully you'll get through quickly!
  • Ugh - that sucks! I was in & out in 15 minutes flat. Easiest governmental office visit ever! Sending fast vibes you're way.

  • I forgot about this.

I want to move back to VT so that I don't have to deal with CT's fucking DMV.

When I had to get my CT license, I spent almost 6 hours in the DMV... it sucked.

  • Oh gosh, you ladies are scaring me!

My original plan was to go to SS today, but as we don't have a "certified" copy of our marriage license I don't think that I can? :( I was so excited too!

Yeah you need the official copy. Which in my case, I could only get on Thursdays during work hours at the county clerk. Giant PITA.

  • Fun facts: most elevators don't have music anymore.

I hate going to state offices for this shit. It gives me the angers.

I can't wait to be your neighbor.

I'm dreading changing my name. I think I'll use it as an excuse to take a day off.

  • There's gotta be a certain time/day when it's not so hellish to go. The local Wal-Mart is my effing nightmare. It's super crowded, noisy, wild kids running everywhere, makes me want to have a panic-attack. So we avoid it, but every so often we end up having to go there for something we can't find anywhere else.

FI seriously googled the best time to go to Wal-Mart since we hated it so much. Tuesday evenings. And it's true.

  • Our SOS office doesn't even take the numbers in order. I have no idea how much longer I have.

Okay did you know you can get in line at the secretary of state online and then it will text you as your minutes tick by and you can just jump in line? I just found that out and used it last time I was there, it was amazing.

I was eating lunch at a panera while I waited in line.

  • I hate DMV so much that I refuse to switch my AZ drivers license to an IL one until I'm graduated. Right now since I'm a student I arranged it so that my permanent address is still my parents house, since the only reason I moved here is school.

I think they're supposed to mail us one, which the officiant said is generally 2-3 weeks.

But I want to change my name NOW.

I found that out when I got to the FRONT of the 30 person line, which was the only place they had that sign posted. Bastards.

Doooo it! And go on a Thursday at 2:30 in the afternoon.

FWIW - the time I saved at the SS office was all lost when at the DMV. Took me nearly 2 hours there.

Re: certified copies of marriage certificates - MT gave us ours the day we turned in the signed copy (day after the wedding). It was so nice to be able to come home with it and not have to wait weeks for delivery.

  • Oddly SS was easy for me.  Odd because nothing in  St Thomas went smoothly.   If you had a to-do list of 10 items and you got 3 done you were doing back flips and buying rounds of drinks to celebrate.

I walked in and out in 20 minutes.    I had the whole day blocked off and was thinking "now what do I do?"

Hope you get out of there soon!

  • Shit. Maybe I will just keep my name. Sorry, lolo--bureaucracy SUCKS.
I've been in a wonderful legal limbo because with the clusterfuck I have getting my name changed I had no time to change my passport before our honeymoon at the end of October.

I really, really wish I had just kept my name. I'd have just gone socially by H's last name.

  • Um my stupid phone corrected gifs to gifts! I'm not asking for presents, I swear!

30 minutes at SS. At secretary of state now (mi's equivalent to DMV) and there are 30 people ahead of me WAITING TO TAKE A NUMBER.

    ROFL!

I'm not leaving the country but I have a flight booked in a few weeks and didn't want to worry about the name change so I'm waiting until I get home. Then I'll take a day and change everything.

Your passport just needs to match your boarding pass. If you booked your ticket in your married name, call the airline and ask them to change it.

    STUCK IN THE BOX

That is nice! I think Flathead Co.'s website said like 3-4 months and the lady on the phone told me the same thing!

We ended up getting married in Cook Co, IL (Chicago) and were told we could order copies 4 weeks after filing. When I ordered, you could pay an extra like, $60 to rush the request.I didn't rush it and the copies were still mailed out that day. It was so nice to see the actual certificate because my brother (officiant) messed up the license and I was so worried that we wouldn't be married.

We did. H was grumpy for a half hour with them instead of me being grumpy for a week with everyone.

Holy crap, 4 weeks?! Ours were available immediately after they were received and signed off by the clerk's office. I had mine in my hands less than a week after we sent it in.

  • Yeah my license took 10 business days from the date it was filed (the Monday after the wedding) but then they're only open on Thursdays, and I had to wait til I didn't have Thursday morning meetings to go pick it up, because the only office that had evening hours was all the way downtown and even then they're only open til 7 and it would take me til 6-6:30 to get there with rush hour traffic and I didn't want to risk them closing while people were still in line and wasting my time (because I totally wouldn't put it past them).

So far the fuckers have gotten me for $27 for 2 certified copies ($22 for the first and $7 for a second, didn't want to risk needing two and having to pay $22 again) and $9.18 for the updated driver's license and a half PTO day.
