OMG!! Going for a week w/o make-up

Re: OMG!! Going for a week w/o make-up

  • I do a full face everyday for work. I find that my clients take me a lot more seriously with this which is really sad, but something I am willing to do.

On the weekends I still wear makeup but not as heavy as I do when I am at work.

I'm so jealous. Even drying my hair takes fooorrreeevvveeeeeeerrrrr but I look like I stuck my hair in a light socket if I don't dry it straight.
THIS. If I'm not going to spend time drying and fixing my hair, either with a round brush or a straightener, I can't dry it at all, so I have to block out an hour or an hour and a half to wash/dry/straighten/round-brush it. And if I'm NOT going to fix it, I can't wash it the night before or it'll dry all humpy and weird, and I can't BRUSH it dry or again with the socket hair. I hatehatehate dealing with my hair. It generally looks okay if I follow the rules with it, but it's so annoying to have the damn rules in the first place.

That's my routine too.  Well sometimes I skip the shower part.

I do not think I'm better for not wearing makeup.  But I do feel almost sorry for someone who HAS to wear makeup all the time.  I know this girl who's husband has never seen her without makeup.  She wakes up way before him so she could put herself together before he wakes up.   That is just too extreme.

Most of my friends are more in the middle.  They wear makeup to go to work or out, but we have all seen each other without makeup and one time or another.   Which I find is little healither attitude towards makeup.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I work in the beauty industry. I love makeup. I love trying new things. Virtually every day I at least have mascara, eyeliner and a bright lipstick on. It makes me feel fun and I love it. I also change my nail polish anywhere from 3-7 days a week. I don't feel like I "need" it for anyone but me. Yes I feel badly for women who feel like they need to wear makeup to help their self esteem but not everyone who wears makeup every day feels that way.

Basically, I don't judge. If you don't want to wear makeup because you don't feel like it, good for you. If you don't want to wear it to Rebel against societal norms, great. If you want to wear it because you feel insecure without it, that's your choice. If you wear it because you love it and like to transform your look, wonderful.

  • Every day, unless I'm at home completely alone. I do have a couple of large dark splotchy patches on my face, and I'm painfully self conscious about them.

I also always have my nails done. Its a pet peeve of mine. I dont feel put together without it.

  • Wearing makeup is against policy at my work (clean room environment), so I only wear it on the weekends. I'm actually getting to the point where I forget to think about it on the weekends, which is usually unfortunate because I remember after we've left the house.

My daily makeup used to be just mascara and eyeliner. Because I like how my eyes stand out. If I'm going somewhere really fancy I'll do some eye shadow or maybe some lip gloss.

I've recently been thinking about learning how to do more of a daily make-up thing. I'm trying to get a better job and I'll need to reset my routine, so I might as well add a few things. I just don't really know where to start. I was never much of a make-up girl so I'm really uncertain with anything that isn't stage make-up.

I've found it really helpful (and fun!) to go get makeup done. A lot of the cosmetics counters at Macy's will do it for you for "free" - there's a minimum amount or # of pieces you must purchase after. You can ask them to do something super natural and to help you understand what they're doing, why and then decide if you want to do it. I like Clinique because I have really sensitive skin.

  • I wear a "full face". My daily routine is multi-function creams, foundation, powder, blush, eye shadow, and tinted lip balm. Sometimes I put on mascra and eyeliner if I have time. It makes me feel great to have 10 mins in the day where I fully focus on myself. I view it as daily pampering. I also put it on because a lot of it has built in sunscreen so that helps protect my skin.

But if I'm hiking or going to work out I just put on some foundation. My skin actually gets very oily and starts forming zits without it.

  • I have a "full face" on almost every day, unless all I'm doing is going to the gym or lounging around at home.  I just feel better with it on, like I'm more put together.  However, I prefer the more natural look, and a lot of people never knew I wore foundation for a long time.  Girl, I don't have skin that flawless.

When I don't do my makeup and I go to work/out I always get the "omg, are you okay?  You look really sick."  Thanks.  Thanks for telling me my actual face looks like I'm physically ill.

Every once in awhile I have a "fuck makeup!" day, and I go without it for a bit.  I also prefer my nails to be done.  I don't judge anyone who goes without makeup though.  More power to 'em.

  • When I am home or need to run to the food store on the weekend I will go without but wearing makeup makes me feel put together and presentable.
@Maggie0829 - completely off topic (sorry for the mini-threadjack), but where are you from?  The only other person  I've heard say "food store" is DH, well and occasionally his mom, I guess.   I've always wondered if it was a regional thing, since mid-western me has never heard it otherwise.

  • @katwag I don't think working in a business professional office makes pony tails unacceptable. I was actually taught to wear a low pony or tight bun for job interviews because it's more professional than hair down, which can be looked at as more "sexy". But it would have to be a nice, showered bun/pony and not a college "I'm hung over so let's pile this shit in a messy bun on the top of my head". I've mastered the classy bun because I'm just too downright lazy to blow dry :)

Meh, I don't agree that hair up is unprofessional. And I don't agree that hair down is sexy.

It's just hair. If someone works in a professional environment and their hair looks neat, I don't even really notice whether it's up or down. I've seen the messy bun at work and I've seen hair down that looks like someone stuck a gum wrapper in an outlet.

  • @melbenso - I live in Maryland.  I also say "I am going food shopping."  My Mom would either call it the supermarket or the food store when I was growing up.  We rarely said grocery store.  And even now the word 'grocery' just sounds all kinds of weird.

  • @Maggie0829 - makes sense.  DH grew up in D.C., but his mom is from Silver Springs.  Definately a regional thing then.  :)

  • This is an interesting conversation for sure.

When I was younger, I used foundation all the time to cover zits. Now that my skin is better, I stick to SPF moisturizer, under-eye concealer, eyeliner and mascara.

My perceived problem is that as a natural blond, with practically clear eyebrows and eyelashes, I look like a ghost without makeup. As I age, that only gets worse.  I think I look sick without makeup, honestly.  Even to the grocery store or gym, I'll at least put on concealer and mascara because you just don't know who you'll run into, you know?

If I have a big meeting for work or a conference, that's when I'll take care with a "full face".  Nights out on the town too.

At least DH thinks I'm hot :)

  • I don't wear much makeup. During the week, I shower, put on moisturizer, then put on some BB Cream. I usually brush/comb by brows because they can get unruly.

Every now and then I will spice it up on the weekends and wear actual foundation, blush, mascara, etc., but mainly I only do that because I bought nice foundation for our engagement pictures months ago, and since I've already paid for it, I figured I might as well use.

FI actually prefers me without makeup, and that's fine with me!
  • Hmmm I hope all women will feel confident enough one day to go around without any makeup unless they feel they need to "enhance" this or that for special occasions and what not. I grew up with little to no make up and even though I'm a MUA and own a lot of stuff, I never wear full make up. I'll wear a bit of mascara and if I need to zazz it up, some pink or red lipstick.

I never wear foundation/powder etc (and I thank God I have good skin) but if I have to do a shoot or something then I'll go more in depth with it.

  • I rarely wear foundation. I have very sensitive skin and the only foundation that doesn't break me out is Lancome, which is expensive, so I try not to use it often. I was blessed with dark lashes and brows, so I don't really need mascara on a daily basis. I love playing with makeup when I have time, but mostly I just don't bother. I also rarely brush my hair. (My curls hate hairbrushes)

However, I have an immense weakness for lipsticks. A friend once asked me to count all the lip products I had in my purse at that exact moment (middle of the workday). I had 16.

My daily routine is shower, brush teeth, stringent, eye moisturizer, facial moisturizer and done. I only wash my hair every other day - I grow it out and donate it, so I rarely dry it. It dries quickly and has the slightest wave, rarely frizzy - I'm a lucky gal.

The last time I wore makeup was my wedding 15 months ago. I have never worn makeup two full days in a row.

I have this ridiculous theory that not wearing makeup is what keeps my skin healthy and looking young. I am routinely mistake for being 7-10 years younger.

I wish mascara was easier to get off bc I have long eyelashes, but the tips are blonde, so I do enjoy the effect mascara gives...but then my eyelashes brush against my glasses and leave streaks so I have to wear contacts on the rare occasion I use mascara.

ETA - for some weird reason I probably have as much makeup as all the makeup wearing girls do. I buy it and never use it and sadly I don't buy the cheap stuff - I buy Lancome bc that's the face regiment I use.

Make sure you're wearing waterproof mascara. I used to have that problem, then I switched to Tarte's Lights Camera Splashes mascara. I give it about 15 seconds to dry fully after I apply it, then put my glasses back on. Voila, no streaks.

  • I absolutely love makeup and have a ton of really fun, interesting things to play with, but I also really love sleeping in, so I pretty much only ever wear it on the weekends. Those days I go all out, though!

(Although I recently bought some Anastasia tinted brow gel, so I've been wearing that and some foundation more often. That shit is the bomb dot com.)
  • I have more makeup than is necessary, but I use most of it for work. I'm a stage actor, so depending on how busy we are, I wear a FULL face of makeup 4-6 days a week. Foundation, powder, blush, highlighter, eyeshadow, liner, eyebrow pencil, mascara, false lashes, and lips. On my days off, I usually go makeup free, or just bb cream, powder and mascara. I can put on a full face in about 10-15 minutes though, and it made the choice of doing my own makeup for our wedding a no brainer!
  • My make up has always been extremely simple. Moisturizer, Bare Minerals foundation powder (or neutragena), lip stain with gloss on top (or just some gloss/lipstick), some mascara. If I'm going out I'll add some eye shadow and eye liner and do a darker look on my lips.

Recently I've wanted to try doing a little something...more. Not for everyday (mornings are HARD) but for going out/getting fancy. But I'm woefully ignorant on how to do grown-up make up. I watch stuff on YouTube and get really overwhelmed with all the stuffs.
  • I only wear make-up if we are going out somewhere nice. I invested in some really good make-up about a year and a half ago, and most of it has probably gone bad because I wear it so infrequently. For me, I just love sleep. I'm too lazy to get up early and do my face. Also, I work in a lab, so going without is actually better for my skin anyway.

Article Note: The author posted a picture of herself with and without make-up, and I think she looks basically the same in both pictures. I will only notice your make-up if you have too much of it on.

  • I'm a bit self-conscious about my blonde eyelashes, so I do prefer to put some mascara on before I leave the house, but if I can't I don't worry about it too much. I wear tinted moisturiser and eyeliner as well to work and out in the evening, but not at home, running errands, stuff like that unless it's already on. I've always had good (if dryish) skin, so I've never done much with foundation/powder/concealer/blush on the daily, just for evening (to hide the red in my cheeks if i get too warm or too cold, which always happens to me.)

  • Yes, I feel very insecure w/o make up or my hair done.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I wear a full face of makeup everyday, no exceptions. I just don't feel right without it. It would be like if I left without my shoes or something.
