Yes, house hunters is completely fake. They have to be at least under contract on their house before filming.

Yup, I got interviewed to be on the show too!!

What was that like? What did they ask? I'm intrigued.
  • The mom on this episode is super sweet so far.

    They want ENERGY and CONFLICT!

There's an application online, I don't remember anything too specific about that, but after I sent that in I did get a call back, and that was mostly instructions for doing an audition video.  You had to go around your current place and say what you liked and disliked and there were a bunch of the "interview" questions you had to answer on camera with your hunting partner about what you were looking for in your new place (even though you have bought it by then).  Since I was single, I didn't have a partner, and my mom was going to tour with me.

A lot of the application I remember was logistical - do you have a place to stay between when you close and when we can film?  Can you commit to 5 days of shooting?

My realtor was SOOOO excited about doing it -  I was more disappointed for him when we weren't chosen!

  • So I guess that's why every single episode has at least one person who's extremely picky and turns their nose up at the most minor shit.

Yes, they will only film after you own it, and IIRC your realtor has to find the other "options" that are willing to be filmed.

    SPOILER ALERT BELOW!!

That's why it's almost always the empty house.

  • Gurl, your wine game can never be too strong.

I watched a few episodes but it bores me after a while.  Mostly because I don't get all the attachment to a dress.

Several months ago, my mother pulled her dress out of the closet and opened the box for the first time in 35 years.  She did not offer it to me, but she did offer her bouquet (it's silk).  She said her dress was 'too dated' for me.  Plus I think she really really REALLY wanted to go dress shopping, lol.  She gave it to goodwill in the summer with the hope that someone could make it into something else.

My FMIL on the other hand, offered hers to me.  FI and I had been dating for about a year (no engagement in sight) and she was cleaning her closet and said "I'm gonna pitch it I guess but if you want it I'll hold onto it.  It's perfectly good."

Yeah, like that wouldn't give FI a severe complex...me wearing his mother's dress.  I politely declined and assured her that if FI was the one, I'd just purchase a dress.

Hmmm, maybe that's why I wasn't chosen!  I was more into "vintage charm".  I thought my ultra-pink bathroom (that I love) gave me a shot, but I was wrong!

  • Man, I couldn't fit into my Mom's dress if I wanted to.  When she got married she was 4'11 and weighed 75 pounds.  I'd be closer to fitting in my Dad's tux (which was a lovely white tailed 80's number with ruffles).  I should raid their closet.  I bet his tux would make a great Halloween costume.

Yup! (Although when buying you can ASK for anything you want, right?)

I used to be such a junkie for that show!

They just added it on Netflix too!  I said to SO that I finally could have gotten rid of cable if I hadn't moved my attention to TLC marathons.

My mom weighed 100 lbs and was 5 months pregnant. She's built like a tiny bird made of paper clip wires. My grandmother and aunt bought her a dress to wear to the city hall. It was a drop-waist 80's confection. Cocktail length, short-sleeved, in light gray with navy and brown diagonal stripes.

I've seen it once and it reminded me of coach bus upholstery. Mom didn't like it either, but she wanted to make grandma happy so she made herself part of the pavement.

  • HH annoys me so much.  Actually a lot of them do.

I was watching Living Alaska one day.  Their budget was between $250K and $1.1M.    Yeah, right.  They made up some story they would consider buying a $1M place to use as a B&B.   The $250K place as a piece of shit (but great views). Of course they picked the $350K or so place.  I wasn't buying that up to $1M budget at all.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Hahahaha. This! And they loooove granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. If they're anything but, they tend to flip shit.

  • You have to sign a confidentiality clause on most reality shows, but I can promise, due to Daughter's two years in LA, that most are completely fake. They advertise for actors instead of bothering to look for actual people, and give you fake professions and backgrounds. Daughter appeared on a couple of them. One was a dating show, and they actually told her when she went in, "You're a spoiled daddy's girl and you've been unemployed for three years."  And on another show, they all wore earbuds and the directors fed them their lines.

  • The first year of any reality show is the closest to being real as real can be.  After the first year it gets more and more scripted.  Even today we were watching Million Dollar Listing - LA, I was yelling "this is so fake".

  • Has anyone seen the House Hunters drinking game (Clicky)? I think you would be shit-faced after 1 episode.

  • So, as I'm watching Say Yes to the Dress I thought of something. I would never tell my daughter she had to wear my dress- I think that's so selfish. I'd want her to chose her own. BUT what if you can't stand the one she chooses? Do you just keep your mouth shut (like you do with a best friend) because they can have whatever their heart desires? Or do you tell her that she looks like a whore in the Pnina?

I feel like I'd make a squinch face and say, "If you like it, I love it." If the girl is really focused on that one, that's what she's going to go with.

Well you have to remember that it's a different generation, but at the same time I do think that in a setting like that (a wedding, probably a 'formal' one if that's your price range) you are still a reflection of your parents.  I would certainly expect my mom to say it!

    WTF quote boxes? I
hate when a bride finds "the one" and is all happy and having the moment, and then someone pipes up and is like "I don't think it's you".  Are you freaking kidding me?  Obviously it is, or else she wouldn't be saying that it is the one, STFU.
ETA this is not ragey meant at you, just the picky people who pipe up on the show.

We bought a table and chairs from the old owners of our house. They asked us if we wanted it because it fit perfectly in the spot.

Also, our house would be perfect for house hunters. Open concept, no painting needed, stainless steel appliances, skylights, big yard.  We don't have granite counter tops though, that might be a deal breaker ;)

true, that's what the mom on the show did. She originally said she wasn't crazy about the sheer but when the bride said I don't care, I'm getting it, then the mom said ok I'm on board! I think that's probably the best way to go.

Hey, if I still fit in that in 20 years, I will definitely put it on for fun.
