Like the fact that they will burn in hell for all eternity (or so they are told from the moment that they are born) and they will no longer have any contact with any family members or friends of the community that they grew up in.  A person in that family would need to be very strong emotionally to actually leave.

You know what? This topic gets me a little bent out of shape.  It really bothers me when people rail against the religious for being a certain way and for trying to spread their beliefs. Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? Just because it appears none of us were raised like the Duggars, we're going to sit here and claim they're cultish and brainwashed?  Because they should totally be off dating whomever they want, getting higher education, and pursuing their own lives besides marrying young and popping out babies?  So what if they're raised to defer to men and be homemakers? As long as they're not going to you (general you) personally and telling you that you should obey and defer to your husband and have babies, what do you care?  They think we're going to hell, but you're somehow better than them and think they're brainwashed. This clearly goes both ways, and it's dumb. 

They seem happy. Reality TV thrives on drama and there appears to be none with them. They share a community with people who seem perfectly fine to share their belief system.  Watching that show isn't going to turn me in a submissive homemaker.  If they weren't on TV I wouldn't have the slightest clue on how some big family in Arkansas chooses to live, nor would I give a shit. 

Sure, we can turn this into a women's lib conversation, but how is promoting women's lib left and right any different from them promoting their religious beliefs? Just because we live in a much more progressive society now means everyone must be off having sex and pursing careers outside the home?  Isn't women's lib partly about having a choice, not conforming? 

I'm sure you all will school me on this, and I practically slept through my one and only women's studies course in college, but live and let live. I'm going back to my career duties now. 

The Duggars come from a culture that you are not allowed to outwardly show any other emotion other than happiness.  

On top of that they are not allowed to question their parents.  Certainly not in public. 

Add the 2 together and you get "they seem happy", well because there isn't any other way you are allowed to publicly express yourself.

Also, their religious beliefs have spurred them into spreading vicious lies, like when Michelle Duggar made transphobic robo-calls against the measure in Arkansas allowing transgender persons to use bathrooms in accordance with their gender identity claiming it would allow sex predators to have access to areas reserved for woman and girls. I read the the Duggars self-identify as "Independent Baptist" ... I'd be totally curious to see if their church has a statement if faith. I don't particularly follow news regarding them, so please forgive any ignorance. What child abuse has happened, @daria24?

I'm all for people having whatever religious beliefs they want, so long as they don't brainwash/force their children into having the same belief system. 

For example, the Sister Wives family doesn't bother me. I may not agree with their lifestyle, but some of their children have said they don't want to be polygamist when they grow up. Did their parents flip out and threaten to shun them? Nope. 

But if one of the Duggar children, especially one of the girls, turned against the Quiverfull lifestyle, after Momma and Papa Duggar recovered from their ensuing heart attacks, I guarantee they would cut that kid out of the family so fast.

None of the unmarried girls (adult or not) are allowed to leave the house without a "buddy"  Need to run to the store for milk?  Got to bring someone to hold you accountable.   Want to learn to be a mid-wife?  One of you sisters has to attend classes and training with you.

I hope somebody starts thinking for themself, escapes, and makes at least 30 metric ass-tons of money on tell-alls and interviews and all that. And then that one helps the others get it together for themselves as well. I hope they lead the free-thinking (and free self-expression) charge.

I wish them nothing but the best, because being unable to do anything than put a fake smile on when you are not feeling the joy for fear of retribution from god and those surrounding you is not fucking ok.

That was about all there was to the run in. We were up in Colorado Springs for a derby event, and I went out in my tank top and threw a long skirt over my shorts because I didn't feel like explaining the big ass bruise I had on my leg. Colorado Springs is already fucked up reality hell, I assume that was the visit reason.

So yeah. Anyone who implies I need to be beaten by a male into submission is a flaming cuntwaffle. That's nothing to do with anything else.
