Do you get a lot of trick-or-treaters?

We live in a residential area/small neighborhood. There aren't too many kids in our neighborhood, but there are many other neighborhoods nearby. However, we get zero trick-or-treaters. I bought candy last year and not one came! It makes me so sad. I love seeing kids dressed up in their costumes. 

My brother lives in a condo building and gets a good amount of trick-or-treaters. And I'm such a dork, that I asked if I could come over and give candy out. 

And he said no, because he's going out to a bar.

That's so funny that he gets trick or treaters in a condo building! I live in a condo building and have never had any. I agree it's always fun handing out candy, reminds me of how much fun it was as a kid. I may or may not have bought Halloween candy the other day...for myself...

FI and I live inthe middle of nowhere. Our closest neighbor is over 80 years old. There are a few kids who lie close but I doubt they come to our house. I'll leave my light on and have candy anyways. If no one comes, I just eat the leftovers.

Most kids in my area (me included when I was younger) went to town to the neighborhoods to trick-or-treat and went to trunk-or-treat.

Not really. I close at work that night (all my managers want to go to parties and I felt pity for them so I opted to close). But it's my last shift (quitting for a new job) and I kind of screwed them over for the weekend (they all also wanted Saturday off...but since Fri is my last day one of them gets to do what I did for the last 8 month: rearrange MY social schedule so they they can have theirs).

We had like ten last year, but it was raining, so I think that's why. However, we were the only lights on on our street. That bums me out, too!

Even when I was a kid, those were the most popular places to hit up. My best friend growing up lived in a big condo complex and we went there every year. 

I used to own a townhouse and that place was insane on Halloween. It was like they bused the kids in. The first year I lived there, I ran out of candy by 6pm and had to run to the store to get more.

Aww that's so sad!!! Halloween is my favourite; DH even proposed at the pumpkin patch! We bought a house last Sept and I was beyond excited to get trick-or-treaters again! We get a fair number.. maybe 75? We had people almost constantly from 5:30- 9 pm last year.

Ugh our neighborhood is the same way. There are a few kids on our street, but they must go to a bigger neighborhood. Last year we had ONE kid. He got about 6lbs of KitKats and Whoppers.

I never got anyone at my old condo either. I sat out there all night like a fool with my giant bowl of candy, lights on, tiki torches lit. I got 2 girls who weren't even trick or treating, just driving past to visit their grandma. All the candy for you. 

(In both instances, I ate all the Reese's cups.)

On a related note though, have ya'll heard of this? I'd love to do it but like I said, no kids. Maybe I'll go to my sister's house with a teal pumpkin and some Play Doh or at least allergen-free candy. (Niece is deathly allergic to peanuts, treenuts and seeds, even things that have been processed on shared equipment like plain Hershey bars.)  http://www.foodallergy.org/teal-pumpkin-project

I heard about the teal pumpkins on the news last night. I think it's a great idea for the children that have to be very careful about candy due to allergies.

This is our first Halloween in our new house so I'm not sure what the ToT scene is like. The quarterly town newsletter said that the ToT hours are from 6 to 8, and we live right in town, but it's a town of 700 people. There are a fair amount of families so I'm hoping we get some kids coming by. I love seeing all the little costumes!

We live in a high rise building. Our building provides us with a pumpkin sign that says  "Welcome Trick or Treaters!" Kids can trick or treat at apartments that have the sign up.

We usually get a decent amount when we put the sign up. I love having Trick or Treaters stop by I take the sign down when we start pre gaming before hitting up the bars lol.

We moved into a new place in August. It seems like there is a fair amount of kids in the neighborhood (we are about 3 blocks from an elementary school), but seeing as how we are getting married out-of-town on the 1st, I guess we won't be home to find out.

Much to DH's dismay, we don't get any. It shouldn't surprise him given we live on a block with retirees, with most of their homes being their second homes. Pretty soon that will be us, so he needs to stop whining about it.

Since we moved to NH, we get none. You have to live in a tightly-quartered neighborhood or RIGHT in town to get any.

It makes me sad at my house when I was a kid we got a SHIT TON and we'd drive to the subdivisions to hit them up. I lived for that and I really want my (hypothetical future) kids to be able to experience that.

I think there has been a change in ToT the past few years.  It is so hard to believe now but I remember when I was younger I would go out with a freaking pillow-case and not come home until it was filled to the top. From what my pre-adolescent mind remembers, there were hundreds of kids all over the place running amok with candy in the streets and it wasn't over until all the porch lights on the street were out. When the lights went out or the pillow case was filled, whatever came first, my siblings and I would go home and dump everything out in a big mountain on the floor in the living room to trade pieces.

Thinking back now, my mom was probably scared shitless when she saw all that candy and knew we had all the intention in the world to eat as much of it as possible.

In the past years though, I have seen significantly less and less kids on the street in general. A few years ago I worked at a school where they basically did trick-or-treaing in the different classrooms of the school during the last hour of the day. The school would then host a Halloween party to give the kids somewhere to go rather than the street.

I don't know if that has became a trend of some school systems, but I think it definitely affected the trick-or-treater foot status a bit.

In the past no.     We are new here and there are a few kids.  DH will be working . I'm getting a pedi for my upcoming trip to the islands at 5pm and then getting some dinner.  If we do I will not see them.

Both places on either side are empty and the woman doing my nails lives 3 doors down.   I feel bad for any kids who try to get candy from our section.

I think a lot of it has to do with where you live. The newer neighborhoods have giant houses with huge yards and it takes a long time to get from house to house so those kids go elsewhere. Then some streets are busier/more dangerous than they used to be so then they either have that FUCKING STUPID "trunk or treating" (I'm sorry, what's safer about encouraging kids to take candy from strangers' cars??) or they go to another neighborhood too. But when you find that neighborhood they're all going to... jackpot! I have friends who get ~200 trick or treaters every year.

We live in an apartment and we don't get any kids coming door to door in here.  We might go to SO's parents' place and hand their candy out for them.  I like doing it.  I am thinking of dressing at the Tardis this year, too.

At my old neighborhood we didn't have many kids, so I didn't get many.  Our new place has little kids, so we're hoping we're gonna have a bunch!  We are going to decorate the porch this weekend to get ready. 

FI's kids have already asked when we're getting the candy.   Suckers!  We've had it for a week, but it's hidden because it's not for YOU! (they are 14 & 18 - not little kids)

They do the trunk-or-treating thing here too. I think they have it in a mall parking lot.

@loro929 I mean, it's an arranged thing, not just random ass cars... but I think it sends the TOTALLY wrong message to the little ones, and I can't see it being any fun at all. Just all the cars lined up in like the church parking lot or wherever, people open decorate the trunk, and stand there handing out candy. So you walk a whole 8 feet between cars and you're done with the whole thing in 15 minutes. Stupid. Half the fun of trick or treating as a kid was sprinting from porch to porch til the inside of my mask steamed up, hurdling the bushes and outrunning the other kids to get the best selection.

We used to live in an apartment. Every apartment had a separate door to the outside. We'd see kids walking around but we never once got a trick or treater in five years there. 

Last year I was leaving for work on 11/1 and I realized that perhaps the "welcome" mat outside our door that says "fuck off" may have something to do with that. That thing never had crossed my mind. 

Now we live in a house in the neighborhood I grew up in and there were a lot of kids when I was a kid. I'll make sure to move the mat.

Our old neighborhood only got 5-10 trick or treaters a night...  It was a fairly new neighborhood that based on the home size and lack of yard space (plus bad schools) did have a lot of kids in it.

Our new neighborhood should get a ton...  One of our neighbors in a cul-de-sac said they usually get around 40 each year but she thinks a lot of people don't go down the cul-de-sacs and just stick to the "main" street.

We bought a lot of candy so I hope we get a lot of kids!

I think there has been a big change in trick-or-treating. I went to the mall on Halloween last year, and they had a trick-or-treating event in the mall. It was kind of sad. I saw maybe like 10 kids, and none of them looked that happy. Just about every store was handing out candy, so the kids just went store to store instead of house to house.

Last year was our first Halloween in the house we bought. It was cold and rainy and our house is on a cul-de-sac so I figured we'd get zero to a handful of kids. We ended up with about 30 or so, which was really surprising!

I LOVE Halloween and get really into it. We gave out full size candy bars last year because I want lots of kids to come to our house. When I was little, we used to know every single house in the neighborhood that gave out full size candy bars and made sure to go there. So I'm hoping that's what happens with our house.

YALL I AM SO EXCITED I was talking to one of our neighbors this week and she says THEY CLOSE OUR FRICKING STREET DOWN SO THE TRICKORTREATERS DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH CARS. She said they come in DROVES.

I AM SO EXCITED. Also I don't have nearly enough candy yet.

I have one sister who lived on a cute little block parallel to her town's main street.  They got about 1000 children each year.  I went one year to have cocktails and hand out candy with her.  The homeowners would all try to outdo each other with decorations, spooky elements and designer drinks for the adults.  It was awesome.  They moved over the summer, so I imagine they'll have less in their new neeighborhood. 

My house is also a lot of weekend homes and retirement homes.  I think I have seen kids on the block once visiting their grandma.  Last year I got some kitkats, then DH and I went out to eat.  I am still indifferent to trick or treating.  I like the little costumes, but ehh.  Maybe i'll be more into it when I have my own kids.

We live in apartments with door buzzers so I doubt that we will get any. I think I worked last year on Halloween so I was not home to find out. The year before that I was in an apartment and we only got one group of trick or treaters within the first 5 min of it starting. We looked through the peep hole to see it was a group of older teenagers who were not even in costume. If I am going to give away my candy you better at least be wearing a costume. I will always keep in on hand in case I get one or two though. Plus, I will always eat it if they don't.

My building is the way. We have yet to participate though because I think ToT is from 5-8 and we normally get home around 7-7:30. No one on our floor participates though haha. Most of the businesses on the big avenues participate though, I see families going to them on Halloween.

I don't remember if we every had this discussion on here (I know my month board did) but growing up, did you actually T or T on Halloween? Each town in my area always designated a night for T or T. It was almost never on Halloween. The best part was that neighborhood towns would choose different nights, so if your parents were game you could go out a few nights that week.
