Do you get a lot of trick-or-treaters?

Re: Do you get a lot of trick-or-treaters?

  • On the topic of Trunk or Treating...I used to LOVE it. They would do it at the church and people would decorate their trunks and cars just like some people do their porches. Since the houses are so spread out, this is easier on a lot of people And you did know eveyrone.

  • YALL I AM SO EXCITED I was talking to one of our neighbors this week and she says THEY CLOSE OUR FRICKING STREET DOWN SO THE TRICKORTREATERS DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH CARS. She said they come in DROVES.

I AM SO EXCITED. Also I don't have nearly enough candy yet.
southernbelle0915 just because I want more kids to come by :)
A different neighborhood did this when I was a kid and I'm REALLY EXCITED about being in the Cool Halloween Neighborhood myself now. I need to spend some time on the decorations though. Nobody has good Halloween decorations around here, but I'm going to see what I can come up with anyway. Also I have been told that my pumpkin I carved has now melted. I guess I need to do another one. :D

  • We live in a large apartment complex with tons of kids, but we rarely get trick-or-treaters. We missed Halloween two years in a row due to power outages (freak ice storm then Sandy), so we figured we'd get a ton of kids last year. Nope. I think we got 5 all night. Of course, that's more than all the previous 7 years combined, so I guess that was an improvement?

Okay, now I think I understand better the concept.
When I first read it, the mental image that came to my mind was creepy cars parked in shadowy alleys trying to lure the kiddies with some hidden tootsie rolls .

  • @daria24 growing up we always ToT on Halloween. It is was never any of this bs where it's set hours. It was from dinner time at 5 until all the lights were out.

Last year was our first year in our house. I had it all decorated up. Had the house lit up and still only received a handful of kids.

I remember my first year in my apartment. I was so stoked. I got everything ready but no kids came knocking. So I went outside looking for kids and was all "hey want some candy?" Then I realized after the fact that they probably thot I was some creeper.

  • That's so funny that he gets trick or treaters in a condo building! I live in a condo building and have never had any. I agree it's always fun handing out candy, reminds me of how much fun it was as a kid. I may or may not have bought Halloween candy the other day...for myself...
Even when I was a kid, those were the most popular places to hit up. My best friend growing up lived in a big condo complex and we went there every year.
I used to own a townhouse and that place was insane on Halloween. It was like they bused the kids in. The first year I lived there, I ran out of candy by 6pm and had to run to the store to get more.
That's so funny! I wonder if a factor these days is building security, ie concierges not letting in random people unless they have a code. Still, that would be so fun if a bunch of kids were able to hit up all the buildings. They'd get so much.

I live in a big high-rise and that would NEVER happen. My building is filled with affluent senior citizens who would be appalled at trick-or-treaters or people who "don't belong" in the hallways. It's pretty sad. I'd love some trick-or-treaters - we used to live in the  suburbs and it was so fun and so cute to see them all.

But no, I have to live with hundreds of killjoys (the kind of people who report you to the condo board for holding open the front doors even for someone you recognize or for not waiting in your car right in front of the parkade doors until it shuts all the way, lest someone, I don't know, dive in under it.)

One year my favourite batty old lady neighbour turned up with a grocery bag full of random household stuff she'd "trick or treated" from the rest of our floor, though, which was pretty fantastic. I gave her a brownie.

  • I usually don't pass out candy because I help my mom out with her haunted house. We get a lot of kids come throuhg there though.
  • I live on a very short street (only 7 houses) at the edge of a very walkable neighborhood, but not many Trick or Treaters made it this far last year.  I would say I had 10 or fewer groups.

One of the two families with children on my street moved out this year, so I may get even fewer.

I was actually debating bothering this year, as I have a new dog who will go nuts, but now FI had his work schedule changed and he will actually be home!  So I may need to think of a place to send the dogs...

  • The building we lived in the last few years didn't have many kids living there, and the front desk passed out candy if any kids came by but wouldn't let them up to wander the halls. I get it, but I did assume we'd have tons of ToTers until I asked about signs.

We're in a house now, and most people sit out on their porches with the candy since a lot of the houses have long walks up to the door. I'm hoping we get a lot of kids but I might hold back on the candy just in case and go in early if it runs out.

I think there has been a change in ToT the past few years.  It is so hard to believe now but I remember when I was younger I would go out with a freaking pillow-case and not come home until it was filled to the top. From what my pre-adolescent mind remembers, there were hundreds of kids all over the place running amok with candy in the streets and it wasn't over until all the porch lights on the street were out. When the lights went out or the pillow case was filled, whatever came first, my siblings and I would go home and dump everything out in a big mountain on the floor in the living room to trade pieces.

Thinking back now, my mom was probably scared shitless when she saw all that candy and knew we had all the intention in the world to eat as much of it as possible.

In the past years though, I have seen significantly less and less kids on the street in general. A few years ago I worked at a school where they basically did trick-or-treaing in the different classrooms of the school during the last hour of the day. The school would then host a Halloween party to give the kids somewhere to go rather than the street.

I don't know if that has became a trend of some school systems, but I think it definitely affected the trick-or-treater foot status a bit.

I think a lot of it has to do with where you live. The newer neighborhoods have giant houses with huge yards and it takes a long time to get from house to house so those kids go elsewhere. Then some streets are busier/more dangerous than they used to be so then they either have that FUCKING STUPID "trunk or treating" (I'm sorry, what's safer about encouraging kids to take candy from strangers' cars??) or they go to another neighborhood too. But when you find that neighborhood they're all going to... jackpot! I have friends who get ~200 trick or treaters every year.

I used to live in THAT neighborhood and I hated it. Our house was the last one before a dead end so we basically had a parking lot outside our house because everyone came since our area had a reputation for giving out the good candy.

I understand driving into a neighborhood if you live in a rural area, but I hated that the whole damn town turned up because our neighborhood had better candy then they did.

  • We don't ever get trick or treaters because we don't live in an area with families, but I just stopped by this thread to tell you how much I love the Stefan gif! :-)

  • In the past SO and I have gone to his parents house on Halloween to handout candy because they live in a neighborhood with a ton of kids and I love handing out candy on Halloween. But I think his neighborhood is doing that stupid Trunk or Treat crap this year at the school so there probably won't be that many. I hate the Trunk or Treat trend. I think it's ridiculous, just let the kids walk from house to house, with all the candy they are getting they could use the exercise anyway.

We live in a high rise building. Our building provides us with a pumpkin sign that says  "Welcome Trick or Treaters!" Kids can trick or treat at apartments that have the sign up.

We usually get a decent amount when we put the sign up. I love having Trick or Treaters stop by :) I take the sign down when we start pre gaming before hitting up the bars lol.

My building is the way. We have yet to participate though because I think ToT is from 5-8 and we normally get home around 7-7:30. No one on our floor participates though haha. Most of the businesses on the big avenues participate though, I see families going to them on Halloween.

I don't remember if we every had this discussion on here (I know my month board did) but growing up, did you actually T or T on Halloween? Each town in my area always designated a night for T or T. It was almost never on Halloween. The best part was that neighborhood towns would choose different nights, so if your parents were game you could go out a few nights that week.
You live in Manhattan too, right?

I think our building has a time limit too, actually. I remember last year I left work a bit early so that I would be home in time to change into my costume and hand out treats. We also had some friends over before heading out, so I needed to be home earlier. I also see kids going into the big business around the area! They all participate as well, there is a Rite Aid and CVS downstairs, and they are pretty popular with the TOT's.

  • We had a time limit when I was a kid, but we didn't really follow it. Trick-or-Treating started after dinner, anytime between 5-6, and they turned on the tornado sirens at 8:00 to signal that it was time for everyone to go home. Except my sneaky sister and I knew all that meant was less competition. We would always outlast the younger two siblings, and Dad would let us keep going as long as the porch lights were on. He followed with a wagon for us to dump our pillow cases into when they got too heavy. After the sirens went off, people would just give us all the rest of whatever they had left.

  • I haven't gotten trick or greeters for the past few years since I lived in an apartment.. But since I'm living at home with my parents..

We will get a ton of kids! Our cul-de-sac has 12 houses on it, and we put signs on the sidewalk in front of each house directing kids to come trick or treating at the top of the hill. We have a huge "block party" up there with our fabulous neighbors and get all the kids running around us. They just think it's an awesome street because SO MUCH CANDY. Annnd my mom is one of those sick mothers that gives out the GIANT Butterfinger or snickers or reeses, because we're all grown and she doesn't have to spend money on costumes for us. So she spends it on candy.

I'm so excited. Our new house is in a young couples neighborhood with lots of children. can't wait for next year to do it on our own!

  • No trick or treaters, sadly. I live in a college town of a party school so I just get hordes of drunk students in cliche or offensive costumes.

Last year I saw a Trayvon Martin tombstone costume. Yup. I should write a fucking book about some of these people.

  • Whoa, @hellokb.  I still can't believe the audacity of people who dress up like that.

We live on a single cul-de-sac that is gated at the entrance.  I'm pretty sure DH and I are the youngest ones on the block (most of the residents are empty-nesters).  I've lived there for 8 years and we never get trick-or-treaters, and I never expect them.

DH and I are going to his parents' house on Halloween to hand out candy.  Apparently their neighborhood gets really into it.

I have fond memories of last Halloween, though.  November 1 is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics, so we opted to go to the October 31 evening Mass since it was more convenient for us.  As we were leaving, we casually invited the pastor to join us for dinner at a local Italian restaurant where it's BYOB.  I've known that priest for several years and he joined us and brought a nice bottle of wine.  We had the place to ourselves and talked for a few hours.  It was really nice and different.

  • We don't get any trick-or-treaters at our condo. The condo association hosts a party for the kids and you are supposed to bring candy to share but we never go. I'm not sure how popular the party is because our condo building is mostly couples like us (young, no kids) and retirees.

I lived in a rural area growing up. My mom would hand out candy and my dad would drive me and sis to the houses of family and their friends to trick or treat. We probably went to about 20 houses and would end up with 2-3 shopping bags full of candy each. Since everybody got so few trick-or-treaters they made up little baggies with 15-20 mini chocolate bars, other treats, Halloween pencils and erasers, and my aunt made candy apples.

  • @holyguacamole79‌ It was ridiculous. I'm used to the frat boys dressing in racist stereotype costumes but that was so over the top and ridiculous. I will be at a friends pot luck a town over so I probably won't see much of a shit show. Although they start the week before. Ugh.

  • My neighborhood is pretty popular for TOTing.  It's an older neighborhood and the houses are pretty close together, and it's all well lit. I like being the 'cool house' on the street, so I make up baggies with 6 or 7 pieces of candy. I think it keeps me from getting egged or TP'd, or stuff stolen out of my yard during the rest of the year, lol.  I get anywhere from 40-60 kids a year. I think it's fun to see the costumes.  Last election year I had an adorable little Obama.

I never thought about putting together a bag of candy. I will remember that if I someday move to a family neighborhood.

  • We likely won't, and I never have before, and I'm glad.  I don't really want to buy bags of candy for random kids. I'll buy some for myself and H or my coworkers or people I actually know.

Call me a scrooge, but I'm actually not a fan of the holiday to begin with.

  • It's our first halloween at our apartment so I have no idea what to expect.  It's a good size complex with 15 buildings.  We went to Costco last weekend and got a bunch of candy.  I'm really hoping we get kids.  I'm at the end of the hallway furthest from the elevator so hopefully the kids will make their way down.

BTW:  Me and the divorced dad across the hall are the only people on my floor with any Halloween spirit.  I may live with a bunch of duds :(

BUT this year my FI and I are taking his kids trick or treating in NJ and I"m so excited!!!  We made their costumes last week, so cute!

  • I live in a condo building and get none.  Our next-door neighbors have a 1.5 year-old and a 4 year-old and we are going to put together gift bags for each and leave a note under the door the day before letting them know we have something for them and will be home at a certain time.  DH is a dentist, and he doesn't work past 2PM on Halloween, so I'm pretty sure he'll be the one who gets to answer the door, though.

  • I live in a huge townhouse complex that is beside a few highrise apartment buildings. We always get slammed. Last year we bought for 125 and ran out within 90 minutes. This year we bought for 200. I think we'll still run fairly early. Oh well.

  • I'm jealous of you guys that get trick or treaters.  Apparently, every kid around here does the trunk or treat at the businesses in town or churches.  When we lived in the apartment, I had to work both years and I missed the one trick or treater we had while I was at work.  (Which was crazy, because there were kids running all over the place every other day of the year.)

Last year was our first in this house and we got two older kids really late in the night that came together and one wasn't even in costume.  They made out like bandits though because I didn't want to eat all the candy.  We're well back in a neighborhood with a no soliciting sign at the front entrance.  Nobody decorates and it gets very dark.  *sigh*  We have candy this year, but I'm not holding my breath.
