TMI-Coconut Oil

Goooood morning!

At my bachelorette party this weekend I received some coconut oil. A girlfriend said she heard from others that it is an awesome lube. The more I looked into it, it is also said that it can help prevent yeast infections, and is nice because it is natural and has a pleasant smell/hint of flavor.

I was wondering if any of you ladies have ever used it before, or if you've heard this from others?

Re: TMI-Coconut Oil

  • Yea I only use coconut oil for cooking LOL.  But I'm interested to see what others have to say.

  • I have used coconut oil to try out those swishing techniques a while back.
Never thought of it as a lube, but I don't see why it couldn't be one.

  • I've used it as a moisturizer, but that's the extent of my coconut oil expertise ;)

  • I've never heard of it as a lube but I use it for my hair!

  • Interesting. I've only ever used it on my face to moisturize.
  • I put it on my hair around once a week, that's the extent of my experience, haha! (ps if you haven't tried it on your hair you must!)

  • I believe I've heard of that use before, but I'd look into it a bit more before you use it.  It's probably fine, I can't think of a reason off the top of my head that it wouldn't be fine, but ladybits can be kinda sensitive when it comes to what you expose them to, so research it a bit just to be safe!

  • I only use it on my hair...

  • I've used it in my hair and cuticles as a moisturizer, I've given it to my dogs as a treat, and I've even put a little in their ears when their ears get irritated because it has some natural medicinal/healing/anti-inflammatory properties.

My sister sent me the link to a webpage a few years ago that was something like 200 uses for coconut oil. I know it was a lot of benefits... but I've never used it as a lube and I'd be a little hesitant to mess with that area lol. Even if you come across other people who have used it that way, you may react differently. I would recommend just testing a tiny bit first and make sure you're ok.

Since it has those medical properties, my guess would be you're ok, but lady bits are delicate and pain/irritation on them would not be fun!

  • I'll look more into it, and I'll be sure to test it on a small part of skin before we really do the deed haha! I'm interested to see if we like it!

  • I looked it up on my phone since I didn't want to Google it at work... an article on the Shape magazine website asked a gyno about it and she said it's safe, as long as you test to make sure you're not allergic to it. Don't use it with latex based condoms (oil can break down the latex) or if you're TTC (can possibly change the pH of your vag and make it less conducive to swimmers, but it hasn't been fully tested for that).

  • I've tried it for that purpose.  It actually worked really well, although it did stain the sheets.  So there's that.

It's also a great moisturizer, and one of the only things that helps heal cuts in my mouth (like when I get too excited about dinner and bite myself on accident while chewing) in days, and not multiple weeks.  It also made a huge difference when I started giving myself deep oil treatments on my hair once a month.  My hairdresser asked me what I was doing differently to make my hair so soft and healthy.

Ditto lolo about the condoms, making sure you aren't allergic, and TTC though.

In my household coconut oil has officially been replaced as lube. FI says it's the best lube he's ever tried in his life, it doesn't ruin the sheets, and it doesn't hurt me.

It also works wonder on my skin as a moisturizer. Interestingly, I've never used it as a cooking oil.

Does it have a distinct flavor? Or do you really not notice it much?

  • I've heard a lot of good things regarding coconut oil as a lube.  I've never used it, though.

Sounds like a good way to ruin my sheets.
    Exactly what I was thinking.

  • We use it as lube sometimes. Personally I don't like the flavor, but I don't really like coconut in general so there's that. It does work well and help you stay silky smooth as an added bonus.

  • I use it in sugar scrubs when I make them but I've never used it like that before.

You can always put a towel down :)

  • I've never owned any for cooking, moisturizing, anything. Guess I'll have to get some of this magical stuff.

  • Anything oil-based = bad for fabric. Stains, fires in the dryer? Nope.

  • ...I keep going back to the article about the young lady who wound up with potatoes growing out of her nether regions. I really don't know that I could ever comfortably use something natural in that area for fear of going to the doctor with something not-a-baby growing up in there.

Growing a coconut up there would be rather uncomfortable.

Dammit. I could have had that virtual high five! I don't get movie references much. :(

And YES @lolo883 that is EXACTLY WHY. What if it's cheap coconut oil and there's accidentally a SEED?! Nope no thank you I'd really rather not. (I realize this is entirely illogical. But for real, can you imagine having this conversation with your lady doc:
Patient: "Doc, I have a coconut growing in my vag. I need you to get it out."
    Doctor: "...how did you...?"
Patient: "...the interweb said coconut oil was a good lube...?"
    Doctor: *facepalm*
CAN YOU IMAGINE. I WOULD BE A TOMATO. A huge, human-sized, tomato-colored creature. It would be awful.)

    You still get virtual high-fives {{{high fives}}}

And the coconut husk or whatever the hell it's called rubbing against the inside of your vagina...the constant chaffing and non-period bleeding...
Yay for virtual high fives! Ew for everything else in your post.

  • You don't need much for lube, it really doesn't get everywhere.

Granted, we have bedroom coconut oil, my hair and moisturizer coconut oil and cooking coconut oil.
  • I use my coconut oil to make soap and body products, but I have no desire to use it on my nether bits.
