HI I would like a professional opinion regarding the dress length of the mother of the groom. we are going to tie the knot in the first week of december and decided to do a formal wedding that starts at 1.30 church and and 3.30 reception that goes on until 9.00pm. my mother MOB with various opinions bought a velvet dress that is of ankle length back in march. the mother of the groom is being made now a month before the wedding and a problem rose as she wants it just below the knee. obviously she talked to her family about it and other people are saying that the etiquette says for that sort of length. we also took advise and since the wedding finishes at 9.00 in december we opted for an ankle length for the mother of the groom and mother of the bride.. Do you think we did a bad choice? thank you

She is an adult and can therefore choose to wear whatever she wants. Let it go. This is not a hill worth dying on.

They do not have to be the same.  To be blunt, it is not, and should not, be about what you want.  The MOG is not a part of the wedding party.  If the MOG has a dress not made of velvet, then they are already different.

To answer your question, yes, I think you are making a bad choice.  Let the MOG select her own dress.

    No.

  • Slow your roll, girl. MOB and MOG can wear whatever they hell they want. They don't have to match, and you do not dictate to them what to wear. End of story.
  • You get no say in what either mother wears. They do not have to match, you don't have to approve or even like their choices. It is 100000% up to each of them to wear whatever they damn well choose.

  • This does not matter at all. My mom wore a long, purple dress and my MIL wore a short velvet black dress with gold sequins. Does not matter.
  • I cannot believe that this is actually an issue.

If you're micromanaging your guests' wardrobes (or worse, the hosts' wardrobes, if parents are contributing to the wedding financially), you have seriously crossed over into Bridezilla-land. Come on.

  • OMG these people are fucking adults who have been dressing themselves just fine for years and years.  Why the hell do you think you have the right to control how they dress for a wedding?  If the MOG wants an ankle length dress then that is what she gets.  If she wants a knee length dress then that is what she gets.  If she wants to wear a fucking tutu with a sequined tube top then that is what she gets to wear.

Um, no. Your MIL wears what she wants to. As long as her boobs and ass are covered, just keep your thoughts and opinions to yourself.
  • I wore a knee length suit for my daughter's daytime wedding, and the MOG worer a floor length dress.  No big deal.
