  • I'd send you a roof rake, but I take it USPS and UPS/Fedex aren't running.

  • Wow, I didn't get to read this thread yesterday, but obviously, this was all over the news. Absolutely crazy! I hope you guys are safe and have plenty of food, wine, and maybe some tequila.

  •  @luckya23 I went to SU for college and was there from 2004-2008 - I believe in 2007, we had only the 5th snow day ever in the school's entire 200+ year history. It was nuts. That was also the year I totaled my car due to snow. I live near Rochester now and we don't really get anything - it's always Buffalo, Syracuse and Watertown that get hardest hit.
@cupcait927, I lived there the winter of 2007-2008 too!  Thankfully I was able to move back downstate after the one year!

  • This is so crazy! I hope you keep your power Muffin!
  • I live out near Syracuse so I'm not getting hit with any of this snow. That picture that @themuffinman16 posted with the door open and the imprint of the door is in the snow has been all over my social media. So crazy that you know those people.

One of the things I find interesting is that the Buffalo Bills are trying to get help shoveling out their stadium for the game on Sunday. You can read about how they are offering to pay people HERE.

  • @muffinman, hope it comes to an end soon!  The other sucky part of this sick equation is when the snow melts--there is going to be a horrible amount of flooding :(

@amelisha, where in northern Alberta are you?  I live in Grande Prairie, and working in Red Earth right now
  • The Buffalo Bills are offering $10 per hour if you want to go help shovel out the stadium for Sundays game. (I am not making this up) In case you havent gotten your fill of shoveling for the year.

  • @natswild. There are very real concerns for flooding.  It is supposed to be 60 degrees, this weekend and raining.  WE are moving everything out of the basement, tonight.
  • ooohh, that sucks.  :(  and that's not even enough time to plow everywhere.  I'll be thinking of you!
  • @Katwag,  Yeah, I laughed about the Bills giving people $10 an hour to shovel the stadium. They are also giving people free Bills tickets.  Okay.. why would you punish people who helped you remove snow with Bills tickets?  Not a football or shoveling fan. Lol.
  • Wow, a whole $10!
  • @natswild, we're from Edmonton, so not really "northern" to anyone who actually lives in Alberta. But easier to explain on an international site.

  • still central, though...maybe we can get together at some point!
  • There are a couple others around here too, we should definitely try to organize something!

Ooh when we had Snowpocalypse a few years ago, I made pina snowladas and snowgaritas. Scoop of fresh, clean snow, pour in the pre-boozed mix, add a little more booze because snow day, instant tropical vacation, no blender required.

I want some of this NOW.

Eh.  Since people around here have been out of work for days, there's actually a lot of interest to participate by football and non-football fans alike.   Once the snow/roads clear it can offer a chance at some extra income that people are now missing because of the forced snowdays (unless your company's nice you don't get paid for the forced snowday).    Plus as I hear it - it could take up to 6 days to clear once they get the go ahead to start doing it - so that means a lot of extra money depending on how long you work.   Plus if your kid likes the game - early Christmas present?
  • Driving ban.. us poor nurses HAVE to go to work! Send the national guard for an escort, please, complete with sand truck and snow plow ahead of me.

  • Wow. And I complain about Northern Canada weather! Ive never seen anything like that!

I live in Northern BC and we've been having ridiculous weather fluctuations lately. Last week is was -35 and today its +3 and raining. But nothing as crazy as that much snow!

    Hope everyone is staying safe!

They have said the game is not going to be in Buffalo this week.  They are looking at Detroit, Pittsburgh and DC for the game to be held.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Yup, just announced that the Bills won't play on Sunday. Still trying to decide on a neutral location for possibly Monday night.

@themuffinman16‌ is there any way that you've heard of where people can donate time/money to help? I'm so worried about the possibility of flooding come this weekend and Monday when it warms up. Stay safe and keep us updated!
  • Muffin, I'm thinking of ya.

I'm a chicken- it's been dipping into the 20s here in Florida. No snow, just friggin cold. Called DH's grandparents. They live outside Rochester and have managed not to get much snow at all.

Let me know when you're coming down here to thaw out.
  • I now officially take back my childhood dream of living somewhere that got massive amounts of snow like that (inspired by Laura Ingalls Wilder and The Long Winter, where they had to go out their second story window....)
  •    The red cross has been helping a lot. Our police and fire departments are giving emergency prepared foods to seniors.  I will check the news and see if there are any other organizations that are mobilized to help others in my area. Several more roofs have collapsed in the area.  A neighbor's roof might go.  (The senior who needed medication, today.)  We invited her over, but she is staying put and has a bag ready, in case she needs to evacuate.
After the rain, making the snow heavier, we might see a  lot more roof collapses, but I hope not.  My sister's house still have power, but the rest of the street doesn't.
  • The worst thing that has happened so far was that authorities found two mentally disabled people with insufficient clothes, dead outside of a neighbor's house.  They had died of exposure. I don't know if they lived in a group home, or what, but it broke my heart. I don't know what the story was or why they were alone, but they apparently did not know enough that the storm would kill them.  They must have been so scared.
  • Holy hell! That looks terrible! I admit I was a little jealous when the thread started. But when the power goes and roofs start collapsing and people are dying, snow is not pretty. Stay safe, stay warm.
  • @SoontobeMrsKlein, we definitely should get together!

@themuffinman, definitely you're in my thoughts
  • No snow.  Alaska is really warm right now.  Most places here don't have snow right now. We're getting a lot of rain though!
  • They're saying this winter is supposed to be worse than last winter, and last winter SUCKED. Atlanta got slammed with ice and it took me and FI 5 hours to get the 30 miles home from work. I am so not dealing with that again. I left PA to get away from this shit.
