What Is Plus-Sized?

Can I derail this just slightly to ask about pant length?

I'm 5'4", which is supposed to be shortish to average. I read all the time that an "average" North American woman is 5'4". A true 32 inch inseam should fit me perfectly with shoes because my legs are pretty long proportional to my height. I find that to be true with jeans most of the time, at least (unless I'm buying designer ones that come in a 34 only...but then I expect it.)

Yet in half the stores I go to especially for work trousers I have like six inches of fabric pooling around my feet and the knee sits super weird. But if I get a "petite" length, I've got a hem around my ankles. How does that make any sense? Who are they cutting these clothes for? How tall do you have to be to have pants fit right?! I hem them, but it screws up the shape and never looks as good and I am instantly frumpy looking.

And everyone wonders why I just go straight for the teenaged girl clothes these days. Sorry, boss.

I have the exact same issue. 5'5" with legs that are "too long" in proportion with my height. Jeans fit fine. Dress pants - not so much.

  • I can commiserate with the pant lengths. WTF are these pants made for? I'm 5'2" and sometimes even the short length is too long.

Yeah, I'm usually a size 0 and I get so mad when the pants are tight on me and also way too long cuz then I'm like "who the fuck is SKINNIER than me and way taller?! What human exists that way?!"

Ugh, I hate that they all seem to be the same length no matter what size you are. The zeros I buy now are just as long as the sixes I wore when I was thirty pounds heavier. I don't know who these 5'10" size zero people are in real life but I'm incredibly jealous, haha. It just makes me so crazy because I'm supposed to be AVERAGE HEIGHT and yet pants are never, ever the right length or cut right for me. And don't get me started on rises either - pants meant for adult women, even the ones that claim to be "low-rise" come above my navel and wreck the lines of all my shirts and make the butt pockets look terrible.

  • I always figured like 12-14 would be considered plus sized on the basis that Torrid starts their clothing sizes at a 12 and Lane Bryant starts at a 14, and they both call themselves plus sized stores.

Almost everywhere I shop, a size 10 fits me. Sometimes I go up to a 12 and a handful of times I get to go down to an 8, but usually I can grab a 10 and it's gonna fit. I've never thought a 10 was plus size. Maybe "bigger then thin" or ya know "average", I'd figure a size 8-14ish would be average.

I do wonder, why do we use the word "plus size" for women? Is there a "plus size" for men? I know for boys they use the term "husky" but I've never heard of a man's plus sized store. Or men having to shopping in the plus sized section. Or better, the men's section. Has anyone else noticed that? Rather then plus size they call larger sizes the "women's section"...which...wtf? Ladies section is for non-plus size, and then women's section is for plus size. So if you're under size X you're a lady but not a woman, but if you're over size X you're a woman but not a lady? What if they did that with guys? Gentleman's section and the Men's section. I know I've heard of big and tall stores for guys, but those are for guys who are both big and tall.

FI grew up with four women, he still cannot grasp how our sizes work and spends a lot of time going "But why can you not just have the inches listed!!!" because. That's why. Because.

Let's start a club Novella. I'm a 0 as well and them pants are too long sometimes, WTF

ETA: @Nymeru Ironically, my wedding dress is the only thing that's a perfect fit for me, no alterations needed because the size 0 is being respected to proportions. If I buy a size 0 anywhere else that's not bridal it's always too big! It's frustrating, so I have the opposite concern :)

Big and tall stores are not for both big and tall, so yes, they have separate stores and sections as well.  JCPenney here has a B&T section - separate from the other men's clothes.

Destination XL just opened here to replace the Casual Male XL.

You can all come hang out with me in juniors, where the pants are not too long but instead have bizarre design choices and sparkly pockets.

I've been saying for a couple years that I need to find out where all the fashionable Asian women in my office tower get their clothes because they all look beautiful and tailored and their PANTS FIT and maybe I could find some too made for my odd-length legs? Maybe?

Clearly all this proves is that mass-produced fashion doesn't really fit anyone right, though.

Jos. A Bank offers the following for men: Slim Fit, Trim Fit, Tailored Fit, Traditional Fit, Extended, Big and Tall, Big or Tall, and Regal Fit.

(ETA I know we get things like slim fit and curvy fit or whatever too, but was mostly pointing out that they have several options for "plus size." Maybe women need more designations rather than fewer.)

Is that what "regal fit" is?! I I have no idea about men's clothing like that because FI has a really weird build (broad-shouldered but very, very narrow elsewhere) so we have to get him custom.

hahaha. "Executive cut" made me chuckle. Especially because today I went for lunch at a prix-fixe menu place and the option with all the bells and whistles was called the "Executive Menu". I suppose if someone ate the "executive menu" every day they might need the "Executive cut" shirt.

I have the opposite problem. I'm 5'11" and a size 6. When I was a teenager, I was a size 00. So I was 00 extra tall. Now that more designers are making jeans with 34" inseams I'm really happy. But I have a hard time finding dress pants that fit me.

Just be happy that you can always take away length, but you can't add it. I would also like to say that short people have the petites section and all pants are made in short, but not tall. Darn you Calvin Klein.

  • I'm 6'1" and at 165 pounds, I wear anything from a 2 to an 8 depending on the store. It is 48" from my waist to the floor, so my inseam is a problem - I need 37" for flats, if I never ever put my pants in the dryer, and a 39" for heels. I am thankful I can wear jeans to work, because I have a tough time finding dress pants.

I saved a fortune on my dress because the sample size fit me perfectly - no alterations needed. But really, my height isn't anywhere close to "normal" so virtually anyone else would have had to chop that gown up to make it work.

  • This scares me for wedding dress shopping and at the same time pisses me off. I've lost about 50lbs since April 2014 and I'll lose another 20lbs before I allow myself to go dress shopping. I will be out of the plus size range by that point for the first time in my adult life.

Know where I'll be buying my wedding dress? The only plus-sized boutique in town, because at a size 12-14 I'll be putting myself into a size 18-20 wedding dress. "But what if they don't have anything you like?" Sucks to be me then, doesn't it.

Knowing that makes me want to curl up into a corner and bawl my eyes out.

Some pants are made in short but definitely not "all". I know everyone seems to feel like other people have it easier, though, but finding clothes is hard for everyone.

Hemming does help short women, of course, but it doesn't improve the fit if certain parts of the pant are meant to fit at certain parts of your legs, either. I suppose it's better to have weirdly cut pants than too short pants, I admit.

I just don't understand how short pants can be way too short and regular pants can be way too long when they claim there's only a two inch difference (and why jeans always fit me but dress pants never do.) Totally illogical.

Yeah I tried to buy a one-piece bathing suit one summer cuz i had a nasty scar on my stomach and I was trying to let it heal. One-pieces are NOT made for short people. Every single one I tried on, the crotch was almost down to my knees. If I took the straps up to fix that, then the neckline was like a turtle neck. I'm proportionally small all over, so anything made for "normal" size people or tall people is just never gonna fit me, and sometimes alterations aren't possible. So it ain't that easy being tiny!

Do you have a Uniqlo? It's a Japanese brand. My husband has a very small build and that's where he buys his clothing. I am 5'6 and a size 8, not very curvy and I can't fit into any of their pants because I'm too "curvy" haha. The best part is that all of their pants have unfinished hems-and hemming is free! So you get all your pants at the right length, usually you pick them up within 24 hours. And their prices are very reasonable.

Makes me wonder who DOES fit these clothes?! Sometimes when something fits me crazy, I try to imagine the body shape you'd have to have to be able to wear it, and I'm just baffled. The best I think is my wedding dress. I'm a 34D and the bust area of my dress is quite roomy. Needs to be taken in. The waist of my dress needs to be let out. Who's it meant to fit? Jessica Rabbit?

And if the inseam was actually accurate. Did you all see that thing floating around the Internet where they measure waist-sized men's pants to see how different they are from the tag? 32" pants were as big as 36" depending on where they came from.

At cheap clothing stores, I always bring two items of the same size into the dressing room because of that whole thing with the way the pattern is stamped out - it means that two identical tops can end up completely not identical if one was on the top and one was at the bottom of a stack of fabric.

All you ladies with pant length problems:  Lands End will custom hem your pants for free.  They also carry petite, tall, and plus sizes.  This is where I often find clothes for my daughter, who is six feet tall.  (Imagine how it feels to be six feet tall in the 8th grade?)  If you need to return something from Land's End, you just walk into your nearest Sears store and return it at the counter.
Daughter was recently very happy with some dresses she bought at Land"s End in tall size.  The waist was where it should be, and the skirt wasn't too short for her.

I just wanna put out there that I'm a ten in most stores (sometimes a 12) and my wedding dress is a 16 and I give not a single shit. And this is coming from the girl with the eating disorder!!!

I also would like to say I'm 5'8 and most pants are short on me. My best friend is 6'2 so I do NOT consider myself a long in jeans. I was called a tall thin girl when I was dress shopping by the seamstress, and I was like wut

I've learned the number does not matter.

  • My wedding dress is a size 12. No shame (after the first 5 minutes of ordering it).

  • Pant length: I finally found pants that fit me.  I'm 5'4".  Like one of the PPs, I've always heard that 5'4" is average for a U.S. woman.  I went to several different stores and the regulars were always too long and the petites were too short.  I finally found good jeans.  I love the fit, the length is maybe a touch long but not too much at Old Navy.  But their dye jobs SUCK.  My dark wash jeans leave blue ink on my hands and that's after 10 washes (plus lots of wearing in between) and two or three times of adding vinegar to the load/soaking them in vinegar, which is supposed to help with setting the dye.

Men's clothes.  My H is 5'11" and is very slim.  He has the toughest time finding shirts.  He does not have overly long arms, and he's not really overly tall either.  Yet, all the shirts with long enough arms will be huge in the waist/belly.  Even specifically "tall" marked shirts are that way to some degree, although not as bad.  H is not tall!  He's not short, but he certainly would not be what I would consider tall.  I'm in the process of making him a work shirt so hopefully I can sew him some that have long enough arms without being huge/long everywhere else.
