Our dog died...

Looks like our year begins and ends with pet deaths. Our sweet 18 year old Captain passed away today. He was perfectly fine this morning, then threw up, and just went downhill from there. Being old, we waited to see if he was just having an old man day. I only got worried about an hour before H got home. We could tell it wasn't good. He died on the way to the e-vet. I'm just glad I got to spend the day at home with him, and H was with him when he passed. He's had that dog his whole adult life. Poor sweet Cappy. I wish I had taken him earlier, maybe we could have saved him. Heavy hearts tonight.

I am so truly sorry. I know how difficult it is to watch that constant figure in your life just drift out. I had my Bud for 18 years before I had to make the decision to say goodbye. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Big hugs to you and your H!

    So sad.
I bet he'd have rather had the day at home with you then at the vet. Hugs.

It's just so hard. It's a month until the anniversary of when we had to put down my Rocky, and Captain had been my shadow ever since Rocky's death. He slept under my side of the bed at night, followed me around the house, sat right under my feet when I was on the couch, underfoot in the kitchen even though he knew better, even sat against the bathroom door when I was in the shower or getting ready. We always joked Rocky told him to look after me. Now my little guardian is gone too. Close as we got in the past 11 months, I can't compare it to H's pain. He lost his child today.

I'm sure you're all right. He went so quickly, 6 hours from getting sick to passing, there is probably very little a vet could have done, and I'm glad he passed in the car, where he loved to be, after spending the day on his bed getting cuddles and pets, instead of a cold metal table in a strange place.

He did have a wonderful life. H saved him 16 years ago when his neighbors moved away and left Captain chained in the yard without food, water, or shelter. H took care of him for a week, realized the neighbors weren't coming back, and took him in. He was the happiest of dogs. H gave him a fantastic life full of love, treats, and memory foam beds. And now he's with my Rocky man, wherever great dogs go.

I'm glad we got Snow when we did. Our other dog Morgan will be so lost without Captain, I'm glad she has a companion. Cappy and Snow were wrestling just last night. It's so bizarre.

I'm so sorry. I lost Kitty (she was 18 - I adopted her when I was 14 and I'm 32 - feels crazy) in October. The loss is hard and you will go through a weird stage where you think of your dog and look for him subconsciously, especially since he shadowed you so much. For example, Kitty had a bad habit of hanging out around my desk chair if she wasn't sitting in my lap. So even after she was dead for two weeks, I'd check behind my chair before rolling backwards and standing up so I didn't roll over her. Anyway, he was so lucky to be your dog. You guys had a good long run together. I know it's hard but just remember the wonderful times you had together and what an amazing difference you and your H made in his life.

Oh god, that is awful. Losing a pet is devastating, no matter how old they are. I'm so sorry for you and your H.
