Favorite movies of 2014?

FI is going to be out of town on NYE so I'm planning to hole up in my apartment with some takeout, wine and redbox movies. I haven't really kept up with what movies came out this year so I could use some recommendations.

What was your favorite movie that came out this year? Least favorite?

Re: Favorite movies of 2014?

  • Two that I thought I would hate but they were actually pretty good (IMO): Malificent, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

I don't even remember what else I've seen this year. If I think of anything else I'll come back and let you know! :)

  • I loved Gone Girl. I think it's only on Demand and digital download though. I didn't really see that many movies this year. There are a lot coming out in the movies right now. I just saw American Sniper, but it doesn't have wide release until January.

  • I really didn't see that many movies this year but off the top of my head, I really liked: Maleficent, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent, Hunger Games.

I also heard good things about Interstellar.

I recently saw Into the Woods and it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be.

  • Hunger Games! I had never seen any of them until about a month ago. They played 1 & 2 on tv and we got hooked so we went to the theater right away to see #3.

Maleficent, Fault in our stars (tear jerker), Blended (Adam Sandler/ Drew Barrymore), Million ways to die in the west (Seth Mcfarlane of family guy), Dumb & Dumber 2 (not super great but worth a rental), Her (Joaquin Phoenix- really good!)

  • Favorites:
    Gone Girl
The Other Woman (it was cute)
    The Fault In Our Stars
    Divergent
Neighbors (stupid, but I found it funny)
    Chef

  • Ok I just looked up a list of movies released in 2014 so I could remember what I've seen.

Here's some movies to NOT waste your time on:
    • Sin City 2-- i loved the first one. This one was a boring awful mess.
    • 300 the sequel-- again, loved the first one. This one... just no
    • This is Where I Leave You-- I don't know what the writers were trying to do here but I seriously want those two hours of my life back.
    • Into the Storm-- it was playing as a double feature at the drive-in so we stayed to watch knowing it would be awful. I don't think a movie has ever made me laugh so hard (and it was not meant to be funny)
    • The Monuments Men-- so so so horribly disappointing. You are NOT a writer, Mr. Clooney!
    • The Other Woman-- just dumb

    Movies that were pretty alright:
    • Transendence- the ending is interesting
    • Neighbors-- not as funny as I thought it would be
    • Godzilla-- I'm a huge Godzilla fan. This movie was pretty much what I expected, and definitely entertaining. Plus, Bryan Cranston! (Although he's not in it as much as I thought he would be)
    • The Signal-- I don't think this one was very well known, but it was really interesting, and definitely makes you think. Plus it has a few super action-y moments and a few very creepy moments
    • As Above, So Below-- If you're into scary movies, this one had a few parts that were pretty damn scary, but it was nothing great
    • Ninja Turtles-- ok so to be honest, I still watch the cartoon. I heart ninja turtles. If you're into it, then this movie is entertaining at the very least. If you're not into it, probably don't bother.
    • Let's Be Cops-- Funnier than I thought it would be but also has some boring parts
    • To Be Takei-- A documentary, and kind of sad, but so very amazing
    • Plus the two I mentioned in my previous post
Can you tell I'm in my office and I'm SO BORED?! I'm doing a half day today so I only have 1 more hour till I can leave. Anyway, I hope this list was at least a little helpful to you!

  • @novella1186 me too! I'm the only person in my department here today and it's way too quiet. I've been piddledicking around all morning.

I forgot to list the bolded, but I thought that movie was hilarious!

  • I really liked Maleficient.  I'm waiting to watch a bunch of recent movies once they come out on DVD.

@novella1186 I am right there with you on The Monuments Men!  I love history and it was such a great story, and I feel like they just butchered it.  Have you read the book?

I love love love John Goodman and I liked the rest of the cast. And yeah the history in it, everything, seemed like it was going to be such a great movie. But it was so awful. At one point I actually yelled at the screen cuz I was so frustrated with how bad it was (I was watching at home, not in a theater) lol.

I have not read the book, but I had a feeling the entire time that the book had to be so much better than the movie.

HOLY FUCK I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH.  I mean....I can't even explain it.

slothieguy and I had "Everything is Awesome" played at our wedding.  It was us and the kids out on the dance floor, OWNING it.
I put that on the request list. FI is going to be so fucking stoked when he hears it.

  • It was released in 2013, but H and I discovered "Bad Words" in 2014 and we LOVE IT.
  • Obvious Child was the best movie I saw in the theaters in 2014.  Very funny, quirky, cute and real.
  • I liked Maleficent, As Above So Below (or whatever it was called), and This Is Where I Leave You.

@vikinganna87‌ I have wanted to see Obvious Child for awhile! I should rent it this weekend.

Yes!  If you do it, let me know what you think.

  • Ditto Maleficent.  We watched it the other night, and I actually stayed awake for the whole thing.  That's how we know it's good.  :)

  • @lurkergirl that's how FI and I judge movies, too :)

  • Favorites: About Last Night, Draft Day, The Other Woman, Gone Girl, The Good Lie, Kill the Messenger, St. Vincent, Foxcatcher, Imitation Game

    Worst: Lucy

Overrated: Birdman.  I thought it was good but not as good as some on my favorites list

2013 Mention: The Way Way Back was so good.  I don't know many people that have seen it so thought I would mention it since it might be new to you.
