Satin vs. Taffeta

I have nailed down my decision on my wedding dress to two ball gowns. One is Taffeta and one is a better quality Taffeta that actually looks like it is a satin dress. I am undecided on which dress I should choose. Which fabric is more elegant and sophisticated? Can people tell the difference very much? Here is some background details:

My wedding is in November, so I want my dress to feel a little bit more fall.
The ceremony is outdoors and the reception is indoors. My venue is at the Richard Nixon Library so the reception is in the Grand Ball Room.
The prices on the dresses are on opposite ends....The taffeta one is $529 and the one that looks more like satin is $1725

Let me know what you guys think is better.

Re: Satin vs. Taffeta

  • Do you have pictures of the dresses?

  • pictures would help.  I think of satin as shiny and taffeta as not but really I don't know.

Just based on what you said, for $1200 being the difference between the two dresses and you seem to like them equally but are just concerned about one being more elegant than the other, I'd choose saving $1200.  You will look wonderful in either I am sure and no one will be any the wiser on which you chose.

I'm with this. You're only going to wear this dress for 12 hours... save the $1,200 if you can! No one will judge the fabric of a ball gown. It's still a ball gown after all.

I agree with this. You can put the $1,200 you save towards alterations, shoes, a clutch, a belt, a veil, jewelry, your FI's attire, etc etc etc

I never realized how insanely expensive bridal belts and veils were until I had already bought my dress and didn't much room left in the budget.

  • Satin and taffeta are WEAVES of fabric.  Satin is a heavier weave, and it is usually shiny on one side.  Taffeta is a looser weave, and has more of a matte finish.  Both weaves are made in both silk and polyester fabric.  Satin is more formal.
