I could use some advice on hair and makeup (PIP)

Of course the messiest room in our house also has the best natural light right now, so I'm sorry about the messiness in the background. Just ignore the random art supplies, piles of wedding invitations, and whatever the hell else (no idea wtf FI has on the TV lol). And yes, that is in fact a giant portrait of Bill Murray on our wall.

Anyway. This was my test run for wedding hair and make-up. FI borrowed a pro camera from work to try and get an idea of how it will actually photograph. There's some stuff I'm not really happy with but I can't figure out what to do.

1. I wanted my lips to look more natural but I was told if you don't put any color on them, you could end up looking like a corpse in photos. So I tried to just add a little color but I think it's too much... too dark or something? Should I try to lighten it up or just leave it?

2. Originally my hair was just pinned back on one side but then the other side looked too heavy or too... I don't know. Just too something. So I pinned back both sides and FI liked it better. I can't decide how I feel about it. (One photo has my hair pinned back on one side, the other photo has it pinned back on both sides)

3. I think my biggest problem is the hair pins. I like them but the actual bobby pin part is too long and it looks sloppy to me with a bunch of big long pins sticking across my head. I don't know if I should even wear them.

There's probably other stuff I'm not even noticing yet because I'm so fixated on my hair and lip color so any other critiques or advice are welcome

Thanks, ladies!

Your make up looks beautiful as it is, honest. I also love that framed Bill Murry picture!

ETA: if you out the bobby pins upside down in your hair they won't be so noticeable. I like the one side pinned back better, but both looks good too.

Aw thank you! And yeah, I fought with FI on that stupid portrait because he LOVED it and I was like "but that's so random." Finally, I took it to a professional framer and hung it right in the middle of the living room. Now I love it too lol

  • Do you just have rosy cheeks or did you apply your blush to look like that?  If it is makeup that you added, I would personally tone it down so it is just on the apples of your cheeks or something.
As for the hair pins, I like the actual gold bits but the bobby pins showing is a no-no, IMO.
Do you have a natural pink-ish lip tint?  I ask because don't think you would look like a corpse if you didn't add colour if your lips are naturally kind of dark.
Would your hair hold that curl all day/night?  I guess you can just go about your day and see.

Now I need to go frame FIs Ron Swanson's pyramid of manliness. Looks so much more fun when it's taken seriously and put in a frame!

Now that you say that, I do feel like the blush is too much. I tried a cream kind that you blend with your fingers but then I layered powder blush on just the apples of my cheeks (because of advice from a beauty blog). I need to work on the blending and maybe forget the powder one.

And yeah, my hair is weird, so it's not going to come uncurled. Like ever. If I didn't shower, it would stay like this for a week.

You look beautiful! Your eyes look so amazing and so, so blue!

I agree with @lolo883 about teasing your hair a bit more and hiding the the bobby pins under a layer of hair. Maybe apply the blush a bit more to the apples of your cheeks and you're good to go!

    Great test run!

Awesome, I'm glad it doesn't look weird or anything. Thank you! :)

  • Girl those eyes.

I love the hair pinned back on both sides. I don't love the visible pins either, but I think you could cover them up with hair and solve that. I think the lip color is perfect though! And I didn't even notice the blush myself. When I saw it mentioned I went back and looked at it, and when I did that it looked a little heavy, but on first pass it looked fine.

  • It looks super pretty!! I'm not a makeup expert so that's really all I have. Lol.  As for the hair, I agree with PPs about the pins and how to hide them.  Both of the hairstyles look pretty, I don't have preference for either though, as the both make you look gorgeous.

Gorgeous, all of it. I love your makeup, and your hair will be perfect if you hide the sticky-out ends of the pins under a layer of hair like Lolo said.

I was waiting for the expert to chime in ;)

    Thanks!

  • One of my BMs recommended that I remove the fancy part from the pins and glue them to a comb instead. I've never tried putting a comb in my hair so I have no idea if it will stay in well or not. Does anyone have any input on that?

  • You look gorgeous!  I think the lip color looks great.  Ditto lolo about the teasing for more body with your hair.  How did you get the big loose curls? I can never get my hair to do that.

And that Bill Murray picture might just be the best thing ever.

  • Nothing to add that PPs haven't already mentioned, but I think a girl can't hear too many times how beautiful she looks.  Gorgeous!

One of my bridesmaids had a hell of a time getting a comb to stay in her hair. I would stick with the pins.

Your makeup looks fabulous. I really like the hair pinned back on one side. I'd say get a cheap plastic comb and give it a try before you do anything to the pins. Whether it works just depends on your hair, and placing it is just trial and error.

  • You are stunning! I agree about the teasing your hair for volume, otherwise I really like this look. I am sure if you play around with the bobby pins, you'll be able to find a way to conceal them a bit more.
  •  I like the lip color.  I think there is too much blush though.

The pins do not bother me.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Gorgeous!

    That is all.

Thanks! For the curls I take a small curling iron (I think it's 1") and wrap my hair around the outside of it. After the hair cools, you can run your fingers through it to "mess it up" a little bit

  • You look beautiful!  I know you said you wanted a more neutral lip,but honestly I'd go a little bit pinker.  I also wanted a neutral lip, but was talked into more of a pink and I am now so glad I did!  I think I would've looked washed out otherwise.

  • You're hot! I love everything! I prefer your hair back on one side, but it looks great either way.
